The most influential athlete thread kind of morphed into something else. It looks like it's worth another threat of its own.

I'll start off the top of my head with Andre Agassi. Injuries and admitted drug use dropped him to 140 in the rankings. He worked his ass off and got back to number one which was pretty miraculous.
Eric Berry, Peyton Manning come to my mind immediately.

Sticking to basketball, Kevin Durant tearing his achilles at 30 years old and then averaging 25+ PPG for the next 5 seasons is insane

Same with Westbrook. 2-3 knee surgeries in 2013, goes on to win MVP a few years later and kicks off a streak of averaging a triple double for multiple seasons as a PG that relies 100% on explosive strength and athleticism to play. Still playing big minutes in the league a decade after the injuries

I got a UConn one and that would be AJ Price.

AJ and Rudy were supposed to be the next great UConn duo after Ben and Emeka. AJ misses his first year due to a brain aneurysm, then the following year for the lap top incident. Plays in the 06-07 season, a complete rebuild year it took a full year of playing to get back to the player he was projected to be. Is an all American in 07-08, tears his ACL in the NCAA tournament, comes back for his 5th year is an all American and gets to the FF while missing his backcourt mate in Jerome Dyson.

Gets drafted and has a decent career for a late 2nd rd pick.

Coming back from a brain aneurysm, then having to earn back the trust of the fans after the lap top incident, then coming back from an ACL in less then a year.

I forgot all about the aneurysm - that’s wild!!

How about Vinny "Paz" Pazienza. The guy dislocated and fractured vertebrae and, was in a halo brace for a while, After breaking his neck he was told he'd never box again and ended up winning multiple titles.

His career is probably talked about a lot differently if he’s a freshman on that 06 team and Dyson doesn’t get hurt on that 09 team.

AJ isnt on the 2009 team had he never gotten hurt he's probably a 2-3 year player and is a mid to late 1st rounder would have been my guess.

For sure, a lot of what ifs, I look at 2011 and 2014 as the two championships we weren't supposed to have, after what we felt we should've won it in 2006 and 2009. We have had our bad luck and good luck.

Love this. Somehow I wound up a huge fan of tennis during that era. All the personalities on both the women’s and men's sides seemed larger than life back then, and Agassi was one of the biggest stars. Graff was legendary as well and I would be remiss if I didn't mention Martina Hingis and Pete Sampras, as they were among my favorites to watch.

I don't know what it was that I ate the other night.

But I am pleased to report my miraculous recovery and my renewed ability to wander farther away from the bathroom for increasingly longer periods of time without adverse incident.

A.J. Price. That situation struck close for my family as my wife had a 2nd cousin with the same aneurism issue, found at just about the same time. Hers was determined to be inoperable, and she passed away within a year.
