Disagree with this. The reason people watch is because of the in-built fanbases associated with the universities. NBDL teams could blow away college teams. But the fanbases aren't there. The eyes are on the laundry, not the players. If the eyes were assessing quality of play, there'd be many more NBDL fans.
So for all that Kemba did in 2010-2011, he deserved to be compensated at best $30k?

First of all, "at best $30k" does not accurately reflect what was received from UConn because Kemba benefited from brand and coaching ability that belonged to UConn, as well as UConn's capital investment in its basketball program. Second, there are plenty of jobs and professions where your compensation is not determined based on an ex post facto review of your actual value.

Way more than 30k. Tuition, room, board, all his books for classes, best meal plan, clothes/shoes/merchandise pretty much whatever he needed or wanted from Nike. Gifts from tournaments (watches, rings, iPad, etc).

Also 4 free tickets to every home, away, and tournament games for friends and family

If you prorated everything he received that's well over $100k/yr job and it's all tax free

People at universities do lots of work that they are never compensated for. It comes with the territory. If you create something that is then patented and makes the school a lot of money, you won't see a dime from it. The school owns it.
