Got the full beer list and I remember why I stoped going. So many big stouts and barleywines. You can just get wrecked. Any thoughts @karstenkibbe and @Dove?

I looked at the Beervana page yesterday and thought, "How many 2oz pours can I sip before getting to a point where I can't drive??

You guys try triple barrels yet? This new one from the Bruery gonna be pushing 5 stars. One of the thickest, yet smoothest beers I've ever had. I'm not big on rye barrels, but this is something to behold.

Try EQ Ghost in the Lab. Very solid annual collab with Parish from Louisiana. There are some very solid stouts on that list. A lot of stomach/brain wrecking stouts! Let me know how the new beers from Little Willow are. I reached out to Kyle at Little Willow this week and he pointed me to a few places to pick up those beers when I am up in the area this Wednesday. Speaking of which… want to meet me at Treehouse on Wednesday?

I’m survived Beervana. In a UConn Hockey Jersey. Most everything was brain wrecking. The Dark Lord was pretty epic. Vitamin Sea had the best IPAs. Lots of very good stuff for sure. The Little Willow beers were solid as always. The Timber Ales stout was superb. The barleywine was almost too much. Lots of good barley wines but Mast Landing was best.

yeah, that is the problem with festivals... I say this with a Basilisk pass to Snallygaster in two weeks...

ok... I think with the lack of government shutdown my dreams are clipped a bit. Alright, what's the story on Pittsburgh these days. I've always had trouble discerning the Pittsburgh beer scene as there are no tall poppies. Even Central PA is easier in that way. Most cities there's a clear A tier then a few Bs and the rest run along under that.

@storrsroads what say you? No promises. Beer advocate isn't helping much but they've never been as strong of a message board as one would like.

I may back out of PGH... every time I look... and here's what frustrates me about the beer scene. Some cities you can tell that the beer scene is sort of rebelling against its own location and with every place it looks like the beers are running heavy on the IPA/sour line with a heavy dose of common pretentions I see in a lot of venues. Higher end food pretentions... these food pretentions arent so over the top but here's a peak example. There are worse, but the classification. Anything that is not an IPA, all 3 beers is "dad beer". I can't tell if this is speaking about these types of people or if it is speaking about myself in the end.


I'll figure something out... I've penned out 5 targets and maybe 6 (pittsburgh brewing company doesn't seem to have a taproom but does a tour but only two slots are left for saturday?) I'm still working on it but there's a hipsterness in craft that I really can't stand.

I can see some places being IPA specialists but when its one after the next after the next...

IMHO, Pittsburgh is oversaturated. And I might be right as there have been a couple of closings lately. There is a hierarchy with definite stars, but I think the strength in the Pgh beer scene is more about weirdness and that there are so many in such a small area. And that might contribute to the lack of reviews (along with the fact that the most popular beer is probably IC Light Mango, lol). I'm not one to drive when buzzed so I haven't been to a lot of the newer places, so consider that when reviewing my list.

I'm in a suburb a few miles south of the city proper, yet I have a half dozen breweries within 15 minutes of my house. That's a lot - for reference, it would be like having six breweries in and right around Springfield or Reston, without hitting Alexandria or Arlington. And as one might expect most are fine, if unremarkable, and good nights out because of the food, but not destinations, other than Hitchhiker. I can tell you to skip Mindful and Spoonwood.

In the article I originally linked, there were 11 breweries listed as among the best. And that article didn't include Brew Gentlemen, which has been fairly universally acknowledged as the best of the best on the strength of its flagship NEIPA, General Braddock's, and its even more highly rated cousin, Albatross. I'm not sure if Brew Gentlemen is still viewed as the area's top dog as some key folks left to go do their own brew projects. Beer Advocate still has them on top.

I'm not a sour fan, but if you are, then Strange Roots must be on your list. They do a lot of experimental stuff with local adjuncts, which is generally not my thing, but the place is well-regarded and wildly popular. Necromancer is a joy. They basically resurrect old & forgotten styles as their primary focus (they have "normal" stuff too), and not all are hits, but it's a unique experience and a fun place to hang. Dancing Gnome seems to be the new sheriff in town as far as IPAs/NEIPAs. I still haven't been, as Sharpsburg is a PITA to get to from my house, but they've got the most fanboys on local Reddit beer threads. Couple of places near me have it on tap, so guess I'll seek it out this week.

Cinderlands has both a brewery and a ciderhouse. And they seem to be well-funded and around for the long haul. I've had a couple of their hazys (I believe that's their strength) and they're good, if a small step below BG or Hitchhiker. That said, it's probably one of the better places to start your taproom crawl as it's in the historic Strip District (about a mile south of Church Brew Works) with easy access to Lawrenceville, which has a few places (Trace, Two Frays, Hop Farm, Coven), and access to hop the Allegheny River and check out the places in Blawnox (Old Thunder), Sharpsburg (Dancing Gnome, Hitchhiker) and Millvale (Strange Roots, Grist House).

Pittsburgh also has Penn Brewery, a landmark institution which is bigger than a microbrewer but nowhere near a macro, focusing on traditional German/Austrian/Czech styles, one of only three Hofbrauhaus locations in the US, and a satellite location for Southern Tier down by the ballparks. Voodoo also has a taproom here (their main brewery is in Meadville, not far from Altoona). And I have a fondness for the microbrew grandaddy around here, East End Brewing, as the owner Scott is a friend and taught me pretty much everything I know. I even ate different malts and hops there.

I'll only add that a couple of years ago I found myself in Torrance, CA and naturally had to check out Monkish, one of the most highly rated breweries on the West Coast. It was so cliquey/hipsterish I couldn't stand the place. Not to mention it was mostly undrinkable sours that bordered on vinegar. I got an Uber, went to Smog City, and enjoyed the rest of my night. There's nothing as vile as Monkish around here. I think you'll find the customers pretty friendly and welcoming folks.

thanks for the info... I've got a... decent sketch? The thought is drive up friday night after work and do stuff saturday/sunday and then hit the ballpark monday/columbus day. I respect good exemplars of style but when I see a top 10 list where each place is 67% IPA/Hazy... yeah.

Current draft: Brew Gentlemen, Grist house brewing, Penn Brewery, East End Brewing, Mindful Brewing, Spoonwood Brewing, Two Frays Brewing

I saw some hole in the wall suburban place... one with a crap ton of pinball machines. Heck there's a few hole in the wall suburbs places. Gotta refine it. BG is closed sunday but otherwise its still going to be sorted out.

Don't say I didn't tell you to skip Mindful and Spoonwood. Both known for decent food and mediocre beer.

I'm guessing the pinball place is Helicon. Never been, and I haven't heard any buzz about their beers. There's nothing in that area, but it does have the advantage of being right off a major hiking trail.

With Brew Gentlemen on your list, when you're across the river to visit Grist House, I'd suggest a side trip to Old Thunder, which was started by a couple of Brew Gentlemen alumni.

alight, I missed that, I'll take another look. Keep in mind I do look at current beer menus and so on.

As for Old Thunder... 8 beers on tap currently, I'm interested in 2.

It's weird that wine drinkers started making things simpler and going with stemless glasses but now beer drinkers have picked it up.
i've seen teku glasses for awhile... maybe 5-6 years. But yeah, I dont know that any beer goes in them naturally by culture or style and as a beer drinker I want something that is "oopsie" stable. I stop at tulip glasses (usually Saison styles) and goblet style glasses (trappist type beers)

My wife likes the Teku glasses. I prefer goblets as I'm less likely to knock them over. You aren't getting stemless wine glasses at restaurants, and I wouldn't use them if I pour something worthy. I think what happened with beer, and the NE IPAs probably drove it, is that people realized that the shaker pint glass is awful. Nothing kills any aromatics of a beer more surely. It's fine for water or Bud Light. That's about it. I gave mine away.

My favorite is the one a few posts up. Beer Works with any style of beer.

I usually put the heavies in the teku. I bought one from Tox that came with their anniversary imperial stout a few years ago. Something in my brain equates that glass with anything really heavy. Glassware is huge for me. I pay attention to how beer is served to me and try to replicate it as much as possible. I also look to see how major beer producers present their beer in their own glassware. Crazy Bruce’s is my go to for glassware. Picked up Chimay goblets and Fin Du Monde tulips for $3 a piece, Palm snifters and Peroni Pilsner glasses for $2.

Shout out to Willibrew for doing it right for a long time. The Warden and I went up to campus last weekend and took the kid out to lunch. Food was dynamite as always and the Octoberfest was wonderful malty goodness.

Went to Dudleytown Brewing in Windsor yesterday and the place is fantastic. Really cool atmosphere, great staff and an incredible space inside and out. Inside has a "haunted" industrial feel with floating candles and a giant metal tree sculpture. There are two areas for outdoor seating, one by the parking lot with a musical duo, and one in the back that goes on for days and overlooks a softball field.

The beer: I started with and finished with their Octoberfest, it was very, very good. I also got a sample of their two West Coast IPAs. One hopped up (Execration) and one well balanced with malt (Wandering Eye). The Warden tried both fruited sours and settled on the version with Passionfruit, Orange, Tangerine, and Apricot. I tried them as well and thought they were both really good. Washed it all down with some Bear's BBQ.

Anybody know anything about the owners of this place? It certainly isn't your typical rehabbed old factory building. It's an amazing Taj Mahal of brewing. We've seen a few breweries build a place like this after being in biz for a while (Counterweight), not right out of the gate.
