BC Post Exhibition Thread

Two non-court observations:

  • Katie Fudd wearing a "People's Princ35s" T-shirt!
  • Thank you Ashely Battle! She relayed during the broadcast how she used to baby sit for Sarah Strong when playing professionally in Europe. I am thinking that she gave baby Sarah Jonathan the Husky stuffies and other UCONN gear to get her indoctrinated early!

Nice! KK is a rock like Nika was. She could play all 40. She can penetrate whenever she wants to. She was driving baseline and kicking a lot toward the end.
You don't trust Sarah from 3? She hit monster 3's down the stretch last year. 2 man game with Azzi is gunna be nice.
I trust Sarah from 3. I don’t even think about her when constructing a post like the one earlier. I’m probably guilty of taking her greatness for granted.

Geno called it a dress rehearsal so I know he wasn't expecting pretty. Some was. Most was not. Pretty good though for Oct 13.

Things that got my attention:

-I realize the UConn following is huge but what a crowd for an exhibition game.
-Serah Williams will be a nice third option after Sarah and Azzi. She looks to score and is going to be a huge asset defensively and on the boards.
-Maybe I am reading too much into it, but I like how many minutes Allie got. She must have been impressive in practice so far.
-Sarah Strong showing no early season rust. Azzi put on a show in the second after a little slow start.
-The newbies, other than Serah, how steep the learning curve is playing for UConn.
-Blanca isn't shy about putting the ball up.
-Geno pressing nearly the whole game was interesting. I wonder if BC wanted to see that much full court pressure this early.
-BC making 10 threes.
-He had Gandy and Jana on the floor at the same time at the end. Maybe not those two specifically, but I hope he plays some big lineups.

I coached for 30 years. These first outings are eye opening for all involved. As long as there was no injuries, the day is nothing but positive.

It is great to watch them plat again.
Hopefully this answers the question as to how much "coaching up' she'll need. While I understand she's an unknown because she played at Wisconsin, this question struck me as odd. From what I've observed with UConn and incoming transfers, basketball IQ is a priority. Being able to get it right away, especially as a senior, is mandatory with no exceptions.

Only 2 thoughts at this early point in the season:

1. Last year the Huskies lost to Columbia in their preseason game, on their way to a national championship, so not too worried about the mistakes today.
2. UConn played 14 different players today, which represents one hell of a lot of options. I don’t know if that’s ever happened before.

Three things struck me.
1. Serah Williams is as advertised
2. BC can shoot
3. Dear networks: We tuned in to watch the game, not on-camera interviews instead of the game.
The coverage was not good, and the two doing the game ramble on and on. Never identifying the players or what was taking place. Seems they were content to read their computers and tell us past history and home towns.

It seemed to me that a few of our players were pressing themselves and it didn't help them. After more practices and for the next exhibition game, they will have calmed down and play more positively. This was mainly Ayanna, Caroline and Kayleigh. Caroline did seem to be more natural as she played her minutes but to me Ayanna and Kayleigh didn't get there. They will.
I thought that Ice came in played well and seemed relaxed.
I was surprised with how quickly Allie was put into the game. Nothing bad about it but I was just surprised.
And I am really glad that we have Serah and Blanca, they should be a great fit this season.
I want to see more Jana and hopefully she can be a true contributor this season and not get too emotional like she seemed to have done last year at times.
I enjoyed listening to Ashley for the most part, not sure if I have ever heard her do a game before.

About what I expected early on. Can't expect the team to be like a well oiled machine. The talent is obviously there, but this was a great game to show all the problem areas, and there were a lot of them.

Starters about what I expected, but Serah was better than I was thinking. I recall Geno saying she was struggling with the new offense. She's a KEEPER for sure. Azzi and Sarah - yep. I can see them saying "bring it on". KK and Ash mostly good.

Have to admit I was disappointed in Blanca, Jana, Ayanna, and Kayleigh. I have no doubt they will get better, but after a summer of working out, and a bunch of practices already under their belts, I expected more. Not sure what to make of Carol, Ice or Allie. It's good people got to see how much work Gandy needs so they can stop thinking she will help at all this season. Great kid, bright future, lots to improve on.

Certainly not the end of the world - after all last season we lost a scrimmage to Columbia!!! Probably great for Geno AND THE TEAM to see all the problems so he can really get specific with each player. I'm hoping he REALLY has their attention now.

A lot of talent for Geno to try and put together
I think Geno told Azzi to shoot more in the 2nd half
Sara looked fantastic ..just like she did final four weekend..I really think she is the NPOY..who else can do all the things she does..and everything looks so easy for her..a pure joy to watch

Geno's gunna teach Serah aspects of the game that she doesn't know right now. Her life is like, I'm already pretty solid and every couple of days I'm learning something new. Like getting a new toy!
One possession early she got the ball on the left block and she was determined to go right (over left shoulder) even though the defender was overplaying that side, she went all the way to the other block and missed a wild hook. She was wide open going baseline (over right shoulder). Geno will show her in film and then CD will give her 500 reps over a week or so and voila got two sides.
Coach Newell of Cal fame drills: chin it like the old days, drop steps, up and under, pivot and face up, hooks with both hands, jumpers both ways (Robert Parrish). We got this! Another 3-headed monster like last year.

It’s going to be a fun year….lots of positives , such as:
The starting five moved the ball like a championship team
Serah is as advertised
Azzi appears to be the team leader
KK is probably the best penetrating guard since MJ
Defense looked good and our length disrupted a lot of shots
Sarah and Azzi could be first team AA
Shade seems to have worked on a quicker release
Azzi’s last three was almost a logo 3….will she have the chutzpah to try one?
It’s all good!

The freshmen had 10 of the team’s 19 turnovers. New game speed, new teammates, lots of nerves for their first unofficial game. They will improve

You guys crashed the website, lol. I couldn’t get in
I couldn’t get in at first, either. I was going to give up, but was finally able to get a connection.

love mohegan !!
all good seats.., great parking!!
the thought by many on this board of a large rotation
seems dubious
the gap in effectiveness between the starters and bench
is huge
like most years 7-8 rotation
unlike many who have posted i was impressed with
BQ (seeing her up close she is really big)
the talent is there but will need time to play within
team concept

My take is I think the coaches have been fooling us downplaying Serah. She is totally as advertised.

K9 and Blanca just seemed out of control and maybe just really excited. Amped up...I doubt Blanca starts this year when she can be the spark off the bench that changes the game that Geno likes so much. Ash to me is just the experience you want to start the game when you already have a 3 headed monstor scoring at the start.

Just not sure where Patterson's head is at when she is right at the basket. She also seemed confused on defense.

Allie played well. I thought she survived much better on defense than she did last year.

apparently that’s what networks believe people want to hear
i generally watch sports without the sound lol

No argument there. However, in another thread, a question as to how quickly she'd grasp concepts was posed. This is what I'm referring to in my post.

Like Azzi said in the post-game, they have a lot to work on (not her, Sarah and Serah). There's still 3 weeks before the season begins. With so many new players and so many potential combos on the floor with 14 healthy players, it'll take a little while before they figure out how to play effectively with each other.
