5x Cowboy Junkies? wow! You must be Canadian.

Saw them in a. Bar in South Carolina way back waaaay back when they were doing their Southern living period before they “made it.” Loved it and followed them thereafter but never saw them play again.

Nope. Native New Englander, now in FL. However, after I bought one of their 1st CDs, hubby became a fan. Mostly Northampton venues, which were closest to home at the time.

You've reminded of quite a few bands from your list I saw which I never mentioned:

Gato Barbieri/Roy Buchanan

Captain Beefheart/Larry Coryell

Buddy Guy

Steely Dan (just after their first album dropped)

Micahel Urbaniak

Frank Zappa ( 4 times no less! How could I forget?

I was a devotee of certain bands. I saw Frank 4x, The Mahavishnu Orchestra 3x, Jimi Hendrix 4x, The Allman Brothers 4x, and Santana 3x. Here's a list of bands I fell asleep or got bored watching:

Ambergris/The Amboy Dukes

Buddy Rich/The first Blood Sweat and Tears with Al Kooper/Blue Cheer (I actually walked out. They were so loud)/Black Sabbath

Clouds/Country Joe and the Fish (except for their obscene anthem that started with "Give me and F")

Grateful Dead

Elvin Bishop

Roberta Flack/Fat Mattress/Flying Burrito Brothers

The Grateful Dead (saw them once but it felt like twice)

Harry Chapin ( I knew his brother and I knew Harry's band, but his concert was a bore)

If/Insect Trust (don't ask)

John Hammond/Judy Collins

Elephants Memory

Tin House (again, don't ask)

I'll tell you a story. I started taking guitar lessons when I was 12 years old. By the time I was in my twenties I was fairly proficient. I loved Jimi Hendrix and I saw him 4 times. When prog rock came out and I realized I could play that stuff on guitar, but I still found Jimi challenging, I ignored that stuff. As life went on and away went my guitar playing, I gravitated toward music like classical and jazz that I found even more challenging. I don't go to concerts every week, sometimes twice a week as I did then, but when I do I want to hear music that challenges me on many levels: by the level of the musicians competence, by the musics harmonic content, by it's structure, by the composers intent, by it meaning, by its beauty, by its ugliness, by its complexity, by its simplicity, by its humor, etc. For me, and clearly I am among society's few in this regard, only classical and jazz do these things for me, frequently simultaneously during the course of the piece. Note that there are some very current and young musicians in my groupings. I may now be old, but music has not forgotten.
