We've discussed this elsewhere but I think the overall downward trend (all BCS games were down 10%) is largely the result of the mess ESPN has made of the schedule. It is impossible to differentiate between the Sugar Bowl and the Potato Bowl, and ESPN doesn't make much effort to distinguish them.

I can believe that for both. the Rose ALWAYS will do better when it has its traditional Big 10-Pac12 matchup. And Stanford-OkState was a pretty attractive game for the western US, though I'd guess it didn't do great in the Eastern part of the country...But with a Heisman trophy candidate against a team many thought got jobbed out of the national championship, it was a good game.

Wonder if they started the game earlier whether more fans would watch. Starting late to guarantee a west coast audience doesn't help when the game is primarily between two eastern teams.

TV has screwed up it's share of sporting institutions (case in point, how many fans missed the Cardinals exciting extra inning win in a back and forth game because it was on so late on a worknight. Sorry, start the game earlier and everybody (including the West Coast) can see the last part of the games. Bowl games?? How about putting them on TV New Year's Day? Maybe they could start a tradition. . . oh wait, it use to be done that way and they crapped on tradition for prime time potential which doesn't seem to be happening.

The Rose Bowl was aided a bit by having a very fan-friendly matchup with the offense of Oregon and the flashy qb Wilson. Of course, the Rose Bowl will always be the highest rated BCS bowl because of its tradition, the Rose Parade, it's time slot, etc. The Fiesta was up because, let's face it, our matchup was last year's WVU-Clemson in terms of TV appeal, plus there was OK State and their controversy about missing the title, and everyone wanting to see Andrew Luck. It was also probably the best overall game that was played among all BCS bowls.

The good games got good ratings, the bad games got dismal ratings.

The Orange Bowl was the worst-rated BCS game in history.

Wednesday night in a back to work week . Play that game on Jan 1st or 2nd and it would get much better ratings. If you don't believe that then kiss goodbye any Auto Qualifiers in next contract. There will only be matchups of teams with sexy traditions. You'll never see us again in one of the BCS Bowls.
BTW, perhaps that's why ESPN scheduled the ACC-BE Orange Bowl in that lousy time slot. It gives them more fodder to bitch about the BE.
I'm all for retaining the BCS if they keep the Auto Qualifiers and merely add a plus one model for the Championship. If no AQ's, scrap it for a playoff.

From an entertainment factor it sucked balls compared to some of the other BCS games were the defenses forgot to tackle the guy with the ball.
