Bad news for McNeeley?

He's 6-foot-8 and was shooting 40% from 3 before the injury, with a 2-to-1 a/to ratio as a secondary playmaker against a tough schedule as a freshman.

If he'd stayed healthy he'd have been a bigger Kon Knueppel, and Knueppel's gonna be a top 5 pick.

Like I said, I hope teams are dumb enough to let him drop to my Celtics.
You talk as if being 6’8” is an anomaly in the NBA. And his lower leg injury is far more likely to impact his agility than his 3 point game. Listen, love on the kid all you want. He underperformed for us when considering the hype with which he came.

Just to play a little devils advocate.

I don’t think the Liam situation is the same as Castle/Clingan/Bouknight, those 3 were guaranteed lottery picks, which McNeeley is not.

The obvious choice is to go pro if you’re a solid first round projection, I’d always make the choice McNeeley made in his shoes.

BUT, you could argue another season for Liam could put him squarely in the lottery, like it did for Bouk and Clingan.

Clingan was in the same situation in 2023, he was in the 15-30 range if he declared. Yet nobody questioned him when he decided to forgo the draft. It was easily understood that consistently performing as a starter would put him in the lottery.

Again, if I were in Clingans shoes back in 2023, I’m leaving for the draft every time. I think every player with a first round projection is crazy to risk being exposed in another year of college, or sustaining serious injuries. But there’s something to be said for lottery talents feeling as though they left something on the table if they don’t have that lottery projection anymore, I understand that drive.

Not anomalies, but they are highly valuable. Hence even after struggling with an injury and shooting well below his projected splits he's going to be a top 25 pick.

If he'd stayed healthy and continued to put up his pre-injury numbers, he'd be a top 10 pick, maybe even top 5. Can pretend otherwise if it makes you happy.

He shooting % is very misleading
Because of our roster problems he had to assume a greater roll on the ball not his primary skill.
That results in more difficult shots .
The hate on the BY for McNeeley is unbelievable. Very few UConn freshmen were ever asked to contribute as much as he was . He didn’t exactly have the 2024 cast around him .
Please give us your definition of hate.

It's a word used much too liberally today when "criticism" or "critique" might be more accurate descriptions of the posters' intent.

We'll find out in two weeks who's right but I don't believe anyone here wishes anything but the best for LM.

NIL vs. the bouncing back and forth between G League and dropping to late first round - better decision would have been to stay another year. Make some $$$ and improve before he moved on. He was good enough where this would have been very little risk.

Liam didn’t look fully developed at the end of the season, and had lackluster performance in tourney. It was kind of a slow downhill after the unreal Creighton game - good games but not lottery pick good.

But I wish him the best either way - he made his choice.
Money wise, if he had a good season, he would have been better off waiting. Castle got $41 million @ #4 and Clingan $31 million at #7. Jackson got $7 million. So you see the dropoff from top 10 to early second round.

I agree. And he is that good where I just didn’t see the upside to entering the draft this year - at least once it was clear he was slipping a bit and got some feedback on workouts.

The NIL is a complete game changer in this regard.

I think Liam would; have shined this year not having to be a playmaker and occasional point guard. But this is all in rear view I guess.

He became skittish after the injury. He played one great game at Creighton. Then underperformed to prevent getting injured again. The hype was real and deserved.

Love for him to fall to Boston in round one. That would be awesome.
That would be! Baylor Scheierman looked pretty good toward the end of the season and it seems like the C's are high on him as a cheap depth piece. Liam brings more skills, flexibility and upside to the table but wonder if they are too similar to be 1st round picks in back to back years. Hope not (not that I expect Liam to fall that far in any case).

Hey Liam got selected to the green room and I think they max at 19 invites (correct if wrong) so someone at the NBA brass thinks he is top 20.
they invited 25 last year, Edey declined so there were 24 in attendance. Kyle Filipowski was one of them and he went 2nd round, although there was speculation that the family stuff contributed his slide.

well that's obnoxious. Him doing badly does not make me happy. I am rooting for the kid. The ankle injury impacted his 3 point shot. That's your point. Okay. That argument belies logic, but maybe it is true. I hope and pray that he is a better pro than he was with us.
