Yeah something is not right. Rutgers football team looks like a junior varsity team relative to the top 1/2 of the Big 10. Is most of the money going to Tony Soprano enterprises.

Helicopters do not come cheap, my friend.

Also, I think there was a recent article about how Rutgers wastes money in its athletic department. (The 2018 credit card scandal below is what I was thinking of.)

On edit:
  • Financial Deficit: The department continues to struggle financially, with records showing a $70 million-plus deficit for the third time in five years as of 2024-25.
  • Former AD Under Investigation: Former Athletic Director Patrick Hobbs is under investigation by the New Jersey State Ethics Commission, with potential for heavy fines or being barred from state jobs, leading to his resignation in 2025.
  • Gambling Scandal: In 2025, federal officials uncovered a gambling ring linked to the mafia that involved former Rutgers wrestling program members.
  • 2018 Credit Card Scheme: Eight Rutgers football players were charged in a 2018 credit card fraud scheme that involved charging over $11,000 in fraudulent, stolen credit card information to their university "Express Accounts".
  • Coaching Misconduct: In 2025, the gymnastics head coach was fired following allegations of abusive coaching tactics, with reports indicating she was involved in a cheating scandal. She was also having an affair with the Athletic Director.

We live relatively close to West Point.

I'd say about five percent of the cadets look like they just stepped off the set of Terminator. The other 95% walked off the set of Revenge of the Nerds. You'll see them out and about and silently pray that they're part of the drone pilot crew or something.

Because they added Penn State, Maryland and Rutgers for the northeastern’s valuable football/TV/cable markets. Only Maryland’s women’s team has delivered a basketball title since 1989. UConn has 18.

Football drives, rides, maintains and pays for the bus.
Penn State is four-time defending NCAA wrestling champions. Means nothing to the $ bottom line, but is a beneficiary of football’s largesse.

Like it or not, this is today’s college sports business model. Survive or perish. We (UConn) are on the economic bubble. Basketball cannot continue to support the Olympic sports much longer. Football will save (or not) our athletic program in D1.

This was kind of true until Alston and House. Now football is a financial black hole.

So what do you recommend? Based on your comments that college football is a black hole I assume you would be in favor of disbanding the football team to be like the rest of the Big East.

My recommendation is to not do anything until there is a big change to the whole landscape. I wouldn't be shocked if football breaks off or there is a lawsuit that forces it to break off. I wouldn't be shocked if several programs cry "uncle" on the spending and leave P4 leagues. I wouldn't be shocked if the prestige private universities broke off and formed their own league. I wouldn't be shocked if the shameless leaching by schools like BCU causes the P4 to go to performance revenue splits, which could cause some schools to drop out of P4 leagues. I wouldn't be shocked if the ACC and Big East merge.

We need one of those things, or something like it, to happen. We need to be added to a league as a full partner. We can't afford an SMU deal or a 10 year buy in.

Based on what has happened lately expecting to get a full share joining P4 league is not realistic. So you would not be in favor of UConn joining P4 league if they only received 50% share for the first 10 years?
