B1G 25-26

Going to second OT in Oregon tied at 76. Olsen made a driving layup to tie with 5.4 seconds left but missed a free throw to take the lead. Both teams have missed a ton of free throws.

Big Blue. Double OT!! What a game! Total team effort. Oregon kept it close down the stretch but Michigan had just enough in the tank. Well done, Coach KBA and Michigan!!

Michigan wins by 5 in double OT. The Ducks imposed their will a bit after half time, and Michigan’s fast break pretty well disappeared. Credit to the Wolverines for finding a way. It sure wasn’t at the free-throw line. They showed some real toughness, and they had to.

. . . It sure wasn’t at the free-throw line. . . .
Curious whether Michigan set a program or BIG record for missed free throws. 22 missed free throws (out of 38 attempts) is a lot of misses, and 42 is the program record for attempts.

Michigan-Oregon what a tremendous game! So much heart from the Ducks. Almost their entire starting lineup fouled out by the end. In fact the reffing may have been a little over the top with all the whistles. But I can’t really put my finger on any especially dubious calls.

As I was watching it, I couldn’t help thinking how wonderful it is for Swords and Olson to find themselves on the same team. What a great partnership! For Olson especially this must be a special experience as she was the main talent on an average high school team. Now she has another great talent playing next to her.

Read the Massey updates this morning. Maryland and Michigan jumped 3 spots each to 5th and 6th over two Big 12 teams, TCU and Iowa State. Maryland’s jump comes after a 40 point beat down of Wisconsin and Michigan’s comes after squeaking by Oregon in double OT.

U$C didn’t move 11th from after beating previously unbeaten Nebraska at home who plummeted 8 spots to 23rd.

SEC and Big now have Massey 2-8 spots and the human polls. Same for NET ( which drops Oklahoma down but elevates Kentucky. Big Money? Is it bad?

And your niece had some key plays to help seal the victory. Congrats!

It was a very entertaining game. The comeback, scorer's table glitch (like come on guys!), and double OT (which I somehow didn't drift off in!). The fans were awesome. Saw a camera shot of 4 boys going shirtless during the fourth and was howling. They're getting ready for their university years I see. 😉

Best part was seeing the ticker at the bottom of the screen telling people to look for the men's game on FS2. Nice to see it happen to a MBB game for once. 🤣

I would note that it was streamed on Big10+

Yes, but how many people subscribe to Big10+ in comparison to other streaming services? At the same time, the Big 10 put together this schedule months ago.

While most assumed USC would be ranked, Nebraska wasn't a sure thing. Could they have flipped the games? Maybe, but the logistics could have been challenging when it comes to getting the BTN announcing crew because they could have been committed to something else.

BTW is Aliyah Boston part of the Big Ten Network crew this year?

Think so, but I believe she only does games that are associated with NBC and Peacock. Don't recall seeing her on any BTN pre/post game shows last season.

I think Close was calling out the lack of media coverage rather than who was/wasn't broadcasting the game. From what I understand, there was zero press there in person but one media person called in to interview Close.

Love Cori’s anti-media tirade. She is so right.

The inexcusable absence of Nebraska-USC from at least BTN is demonstrated by what was on BTN: Southern at Illinois in MBB, a post X-mas nonconference mismatch that lived down to its billing.

With the BIG women re-starting conference play before the men, it should have been obvious to give women the BTN slots on Sunday and Monday, rather than show a series of men’s nonconference mismatches on Monday. Finally, from a ratings perspective, it was a mistake not to show Nebraska-USC. Nebraska is the second strongest WBB ratings draw on BTN (behind Iowa), and highlighting Britt Prince against USC should have been a no-brainer.

The UCLA-tOSU game was interesting to see. UCLA eked out a 7 point win in a game they looked to be on the verge of blowing them out several times. But somehow they couldn't manage to pull away. The game was entirely decided by two things -- 1) a huge rebounding advantage and 2) tOSU's ice cold perimeter shooting in the first half. There's no way a team that small can challenge UCLA's size advantage without being red-hot from 3.

Lauren had her usual game (18 pts, 16 rebounds). She got away with a couple of fouls on blocked shots and complained about not getting a whistle when Jaloni blocked hers. I'm becoming more impressed by her game, at least on the college level. I mean, she's still limited to points in the paint, but she is actually quite good about not fouling. The two I thought she got away with were on aggressive blocks that weren't essential. She can cut down on those and still dominate. And she is quite good at positional basketball, which protects from fouls on rebounds.

Sienna looked alternately plodding and effective in her few minutes. I think she'll look better as she regains her shape, though I doubt she'll be a huge contributor this season. The other bright spot was Dugalic, who is a very reliable utility big at both ends of the court. Rice had a pretty good line at 16,4,4 but was not effective against Jaloni and was one reason why they couldn't close the game out sooner. It was a similar story for Kneepkens (12,5,2) but also too slow to really seal off the lane. Jaquez had another good line, with 12 points and 8 rebounds, and the rebounds were her most important contribution. But she's had better games in which she simply made more plays. Leger-Walker seemed ineffective, still slowed perhaps by the injury, and this looks like a problem for UCLA down the road, namely guard depth. I have a feeling this would hurt them against SC as it did against Texas. I wonder how they'll do against Michigan, who isn't as big, but has superior guard play. That game might be an opportunity for the Wolverines.

For tOSU, it was the Jaloni show again with some assistance from Lemmilä and Todd. But she needs more help than that. She's an incandescent talent, but even she can't carry them against a team as big as this. It was like watching her try to grapple a sumo wrestler all by herself. This is where the loss of McMahon really looms large. She's not a big, but she's a muscular energetic presence on the court. That could have made enough of a difference in this game.

Do I have this right that Cori has no recruits committed for 2026? If that's right, UCLA will have 3 rising sophomores and one junior next season, none of them starters or even rotation players... plus whatever transfers she can shark up. I guess the store is open for business.

Lost was one post about Indiana getting clobbered by Minn. Does anyone know what is going on? It appeared to be at Indiana, no less.

Haven't seen much of Indiana but my understanding is that they're not deep when it comes to posts/forwards. This could be an area they're going to struggle with throughout conference play.

Ducks dropped 3 in Massey despite “overachieving” against #6 Michigan. Oh well. Graves mentioned that anlthough Oregon was #25 in NET (going in) they were the NINTH Big 10 team in the NET ratings. Tough league.

Michigan is really impressive defensively. That last possession where Oregon didn’t get a shot off was really well-covered. I think Kim Barnes-Arico has to in the Coach of the Year conversation so far.

I think it’s going to be tough for Indiana in league play. Like Notre Dame, they were pretty much decimated by portal defections. Notre Dame has Hidalgo to buffer the effects. Indiana does not. Maybe I’m the only one, but those are two programs that I never imagined struggling to keep players.

Indiana does have Shay Ciezki who is either the most improved player in the country or in the midst of a Chelsea Gray Finals-level hot streak through 14 games:

2024-25: 11.8 ppg, 46% FG, 39% 3FG
2025-26: 23.7 ppg, 56% FG, 47% 3FG

Agree with your point overall though.

I really like Michigan’s roster. Nice PG in Mia Holloway, two stars in Olson and Swords, and some really nice role players in Ashley Sofilkanich, Kendall Dudley, and Te’Yala Delfosse, who had an incredible 4 consecutive offensive rebounds amongst an Oregon crowd.

The Michigan-USC game will be really fun to watch. Both teams are powered by big 6’0, 6’1” guard-forward type players. Davidson will likely be the most talented player on the floor; Michigan looks like a much better team.

Her improvement from last season doesn't get enough attention. Saw a post on Twitter noting the increases in scoring and rebounds. Averaging 11 points a game, compared to 3 last year is impressive, coming off the bench. That one series of 4 offensive boards during the Oregon game was just insane, in a good way.

On a seperate note, there are several players in the BIG10 who have made significant strides from last season. Shey Ciezki, from Indiana is one example as noted in an earlier post. Kennedy Blair from Michigan State is another. Averaged 8 minutes a game last season. Now she's a starter averaging 12 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists a game. It will take some time, but I'm going to try to compile a list to see if this feeling has any merit.

Cori isn’t anti media. She consistently says during press conferences and interviews she wants to grow interest in and viewership of wbb and thanks the media for attending and covering the game. This translates into more advertising and investment dollars for all ncaa programs and pro teams. She wants more media coverage and expressed disappointment that the only game between ranked teams that day has surprised little. She followed up on her complaint yesterday when it went viral to explain her post game comment.
