Azzi Fudd Naismith HS POY Semifinalist | The Boneyard

Azzi Fudd Naismith HS POY Semifinalist

I think Azzi has been playing some AAU ball, but her high school hasn't played yet, as far as I know.

Looks like all of ESPN/PBR's top ranked seniors who have at least played more than a few games.

Edit: Or playing games of some fashion, not necessarily high school games.

Vic is ready to dethrone Baylor as the top dog in Texas.
Ya think maybe he is aiming a bit higher than the Big Ten, like top national team.

It will be interesting to see how they handle this award and specifically if they include AAU play as part of the criteria as @Sluconn Husky is alluding to. Two of the SC kids rose drastically in the rankings based on AAU ball as did Caroline Ducharme who is not on the list.

Isn't the Naismith Award normally goes out to a High School Player. No doubt that Azzi Fudd is the # 1 High School Player in the Nation. BUT, how can they give out a High School National Award, when a good percentage of HS Players are unable to play this season due to Covid-19, or have had their seasons cut significantly short. I don't believe that this award applies to play in Club/Travel teams

Well technically these are still HS kids playing basketball against other HS kids. Call it the COVID exemption the NCAA anticipated this ( none or not much HS basketball) and provided it's own exemption for AAU events to continue into the fall and winter. The alternative is not to hand out a trophy which I don't think would be the right way to go.

As long as we are being technical the award is for the top high school player which implies you need to be playing high school basketball.

I don't know much about the Jersey Mike award..I prefer Subway anyway esp. the meatball one..

Or is it for the top basketball player who attends high school?

I found it interesting that none of them were going to DePaul. I want them to continue to be a competitive team along with Marquette. Step it up!

Great info here! Thanks @Argonaut

Or is it for the top basketball player who attends high school?

If we are to apply that to colleges then maybe the top college basketball player is Jewell Loyd, who is both a basketball player AND enrolled in college?

Except she gave up her eligibility. Azzi hasn't signed a pro contract yet.

I used your criteria, "Or is it for the top basketball player who attends high school?"

You can make this title 'Naismith Finalist'.

Azzi's played two whole high school games this year, not sure about the others so this kinda weird.

Final 5: Azzi Fudd, Jersey Wolfenbarger, Raven Johnson, Sania Feagin, Aaliyah Moore

A couple post back @Argonaut posted some start dates and records for these HS kids from which you can roughly surmise how many games each has played. You are right it going to be weird. The committee might have an easy way put though by just saying the best HS girls player as a Sophomore is still the best player as a senior despite and injury and only playing in two HS games as a senior.

A slightly updated version of my previous table. Finalists in green with updated info I could find and I left the semi-finalists in red.

If anyone has the full stats for Azzi, Aaliyah, or Jersey -- I'll gladly edit to include them.

Edit: Some stats for Aaliyah and Jersey added thanks to @DaBball! Happy to keep adding if they’re uncovered!

"The final few weeks will be extremely competitive." I hope Fudd can elevate her game with no games left to have a shot at it.

who knows, if doesn't get enough playing time/exposure this season they might choose somebody else...........but if that happens I'm sure she'll clear up any doubts about who the best bball player coming out of high school really is.........:)
