Azzi Fudd Naismith HS POY Semifinalist

You can make this title 'Naismith Finalist'.

Azzi's played two whole high school games this year, not sure about the others so this kinda weird.

Final 5: Azzi Fudd, Jersey Wolfenbarger, Raven Johnson, Sania Feagin, Aaliyah Moore

A couple post back @Argonaut posted some start dates and records for these HS kids from which you can roughly surmise how many games each has played. You are right it going to be weird. The committee might have an easy way put though by just saying the best HS girls player as a Sophomore is still the best player as a senior despite and injury and only playing in two HS games as a senior.

A slightly updated version of my previous table. Finalists in green with updated info I could find and I left the semi-finalists in red.

If anyone has the full stats for Azzi, Aaliyah, or Jersey -- I'll gladly edit to include them.

Edit: Some stats for Aaliyah and Jersey added thanks to @DaBball! Happy to keep adding if they’re uncovered!

"The final few weeks will be extremely competitive." I hope Fudd can elevate her game with no games left to have a shot at it.

who knows, if doesn't get enough playing time/exposure this season they might choose somebody else...........but if that happens I'm sure she'll clear up any doubts about who the best bball player coming out of high school really is.........:)

If there are so many players just starting why doesn't the award committee just delay the award until May?

EARLY ENROLL AT OREGON STATE
"The 6-6 Fort Smith Northside star [Wolfenbarger] who is averaging 19.7 points and 8 rebounds per game was named Tuesday as one of the five finalists for the Naismith Trophy. The winner will be announced March 10."

"Aaliyah, a 6-foot-3 forward, is averaging 24.9 points a game this season. She’s led Moore to a 14-7 record this season. The Texas signee was named the Gatorade’s 2019-20 Oklahoma Girls Basketball Player of the Year after leading Moore to its first state tournament appearance in 22 years last season."

I found it interesting that none of them were going to DePaul. I want them to continue to be a competitive team along with Marquette. Step it up!
DePaul, St. John’s, and Seton Hall all have players who were ranked by ESPN top 100 at some point, I don’t think the AAC had any players ranked in the top 100 while UConn was in the league, give it time and I think other schools will be able to attract more talent.

Rivers should definitely be a Finalist. She just dropped 50 points some days ago smh.

Will edit when I get home. Thanks!

A side note....Both Texas and South Carolina have three finalists committed to their program.

Texas is rebuilding under new head coach Vic Schaefer who I think will need 2 more years to get "his" team of players in there and then (IMO) give Baylor a real run for their money for supremacy and control in the BIG 12.

South Carolina is already a perennial top 5 team. They're just maintaining what they have and their place in WCBB.

It will be interesting to see how they handle this award and specifically if they include AAU play as part of the criteria as @Sluconn Husky is alluding to. Two of the SC kids rose drastically in the rankings based on AAU ball as did Caroline Ducharme who is not on the list.
While I truly think Azzi should be a finalist, I'm not sure all kids across the country got the same kind of treatment as her. Very few kids have even gotten to play, so those in State that have been allowed, are the ones that were on the Midseason list. To my knowledge Azzi was only name on that list that hadn't played a game. What about the other really great kids who hadn't gotten to play. Again I think she should be there, but it not really fair either.

Well technically these are still HS kids playing basketball against other HS kids. Call it the COVID exemption the NCAA anticipated this ( none or not much HS basketball) and provided it's own exemption for AAU events to continue into the fall and winter. The alternative is not to hand out a trophy which I don't think would be the right way to go.
Connecticut High Schools just started playing games in the last 2 weeks.

Texas hasn't looked great. Baylor just whipped them. They're not even ranked. With Charlie Collier, I thought they'd be better.

They awarded the Naismith trophy to.....Raven Johnson. The press release says it is based on outstanding performances during the 20-21 season which is odd considering how many of the candidates barely played this season.

Anyway, Azzi loses out on two possible POY's due to injury and Covid.

Less Pressure, more motivation next year....

I don't understand why Naismith gave out the award already. They should've waited till most of these kids had a season.

Raven's team went 19-0 and is playing in the finals this weekend. If they win, Raven will have lead them to 4 straight state titles. She had an outstanding Summer AAU and camp performances in 2020 too.

Okay. Not sure why you're telling me this. I'm aware of who she is. I didn't knock Johnson, however the entire process seems pointless including listing players who only played twice (Fudd) when you know they can't win by your own criteria.

one of my points was that she has been able to PLAY in 19 - soon to be 20 - games. Fudd and others were not so fortunate( I know YOU know who she is.

I was surprised that Raven made (first team) finalist ahead of Rivers.

I don't know much about the Jersey Mike award..I prefer Subway anyway esp. the meatball one..
George's Terryville Avenue Market, the Biggest and Best in America LoL!
