I’m just rooting so hard for her. She’s had such horrible luck with injuries that she’s due for something good to break her way. I thought she played well in her minutes today

I’m talking about Ayanna Patterson, not Jana El Alfy

I remember saying when she was a freshman how much potential she had. She just looks like a basketball player..

Then all the injuries (years of them) ruined her career here.

I was wondering how many years she has left? Because of the redshirt injuries. She must still have time left here.

If there is anyone on Uconn that needs a break and a pick-me-up. It's Yanna and Caroline. The bad breaks both of them have suffered while at Uconn would break anyone's heart. I have been wishing and hoping that Caroline would return to her Freshman years playing form. Now I see Yanna has been in the same position and will pray for her also. GO CAROLINE!!!!! GO YANNA!!!!! GO HUSKIES!!!!!

Great to see her hit her mid range jumper. If she can reliably hit that shot, she will really give us a boost next year.
That midrange shot was a major part of her high school arsenal. But it seemed to have disappeared in her freshman season in Storrs. She became mainly a low post banger — which she was also pretty good at. But if she can develop her offense in the midrange, it will really expand her prospects.

Ayanna may have elevated herself to the first player out of the rotation so to speak. What I mean by that, is that if injuries occur, she is the most likely addition. Even then, however, it is not a given that any player would be added because of an injury. Geno has often just shortened the rotation in that scenario if the drop-off is viewed as too great.

Right now we seem to have a rotation of 9, at least most of the time, with a backup for each position except for the 4 behind Sarah. Ayanna could in theory make that a 10 player rotation with a position appropriate backup everywhere, but it is still a pretty high bar for her to get over to accomplish that.

Blanca obviously has been used at the 4, and is quite good there ( maybe not good enough rebounder), but she is better at the 3. Geno has gone small ball frequently two ways, by starting a guard at the 3 (Ashlynn), and by using a 3 at the 4 (Blanca). Ayanna raises the possibility of going traditional as a viable option, but Blanca being able to play the 4 and Ashlynn being good enough at the 3 to allow more time for Blanca at the 4, makes it still a pretty big hurdle to crack the rotation without need because of injury.

Next year, who knows? Ashlynn might become the starter at the 2, and Blanca the same at the 3, creating a greater need for a true 4 backup in the rotation. Or another big could be added (Okeke) that adds another competitor for Ayanna and maybe Ice.

For now IMO her progress is like a good warm security blanket that you feel good about if needed.

It’s an interesting logjam Geno has created at the 3/4. Sarah Blanca Morgan Carol and Ayanna are roughly the same height, though the similarity ends there. Strong, quick 6’2” players like Ayanna have been a staple of Dawn’s rosters for a few years, players like Saxton and Watkins. They were also mainly limited to low post play. If Ayanna can continue to develop that midrange game she might distinguish herself from this group and raise her draft stock.

One other aspect of Ayanna’s game that I really like is that she plays like a seasoned veteran. She knows where she is supposed to be on defense and switches easily to cover an open opponent. On offense she takes advantage of her limited opportunities. She’s never out of position or out of control.

I agree with others who suggest that Ayanna may have a greater role on this team going forward. As I said in my postgame thread, “You can never have enough good players.”

The improvement since her freshman year is huge in these areas, which, in a sense, is remarkable considering that she spent so much of the time since then being unable to physically compete.
It is a joy to see her being able to make strides every game - and I, too, love that 10 to 15 foot jumper (I seem to remember that she just took and made one towards the end of her freshman season).

I just saw an interview with Shea in which she discusses midrange shots, and she calls that “the playmaking area.” For guards like Paige and Azzi, a midrange jump shot creates openings to get to the rim. And for bigs like Ayanna and possibly Ice, that shot draws post defenders away from the paint. If she can develop this, she will get more minutes. I’d be really surprised if Geno and CD aren’t encouraging this as much as possible.

And just an addendum, that midrange shot is what made Brink and Iriafen lottery picks.

I think anyone who has seen her speak and heard the stories about how good of a teammate and just human being she is has to root for her.
I still hope that physically she is able to get a little more mobility and quickness back yet. If you saw her at all before UConn and before the achilles injury, her mobility has not been the same. I remember watching a highlight, I think it was early in the FIBA games before she got hurt and she was out at the 3 point line, and jabbed stepped, went behind the back and drilled a step back 3.
She's much physically stronger now. I said during the game chat, if she starts finishing consistently around the rim, a great UConn team gets even better and she becomes a very real weapon.

Sounds like you are discussing JANA ( FIBA ) and not YANNA (i.e. AYANNA Patterson who is the "YANNA" of this thread, and who has never played in a FIBA competition).
An easy mistake and I apologize if I wrong to point out this differentiation.
GO YANNA! GO JANA! GO HUSKIES!

Yanna looks very confident and physically in great condition. So happy for her.
I feel more confident with Patterson in, than Jana. She has better hands and more active on rebounds.

I don't know about that. Jana was pretty good late last season. Patterson simply doesn't have enough minutes in the last 3 years to say one way or another. Don't get me wrong, I'm a big Patterson fan, but she needs more minutes, and not mop up minutes, before I can agree with your opinion.

Besides wishing her the very best I nominate Ayanna for the BBS (Biggest, Brightest Smile). It just lights up her entire face and makes me smile every time I see her flash one after she is on the foul line after a particularly great play she just made. After all she's gone through to see that smile is simply magic.
