Autry out at Syracuse

March just truly never disappoints - not sure we can consider this an upset, but a USF coach turning down cuse to coach at P.C. kinda feels like an equivalent of a 4 seeded cuse team getting beat by a rando 13 seed — let’s say Vermont. Cuse appears to be on the Rutgers track for athletic department ineptitude.

Does anyone else find it equally baffling and extremely enjoyable that Hodgson would turn down cuse to coach at P.C.? I know P.C. always has as good of a chance as anybody, but cuse must really not be able to get its stuff together.
I don’t. Syracuse’s history is Jim Boeheim and amazing conference wars. Boeheim was unceremoniously kicked out after dragging the program into the dirt, and now they’re in a conference that has none of their history and doesn’t care about them

Not saying PC is a great program, but he’s probably looking at the money they spent and quality of players they had and thought to himself “I could make a run with that”

I'm happy for the Big East, but why would he leave South Florida for Providence, is Providence really a better job?

Sorry I thought they were in the Big 12. He's getting out of the American.

.-.
They’re having a meltdown over there. The clementines are eating each other alive
I apparently missed that Hodgson publicly turned down the Cuse job and then chose PC. Thats rough for the their delusion.

On a sorta related note, there’s no way UNC keeps Davis, right?

Im not convinced the coach who just won a historically awful American conference and only has 3 years total experience as a head coach is the best candidate. Another thin resume if PC goes in that direction.
He was an assistant under Nate Oates for 9 years and he had 20 wins for 2 seasons in a row at Arkansas St., a school that had one 20 win season in the previous 25 years. In his one year at USF, he turned the program around from 13-19 (6-12 in AAC) the year before he got there and went 25-9 (15-3). Looks pretty good on paper to me.

The Fruits just got a reality check where they stand in the world of college basketball.

They should just hire GMAC and call it a day.
Syracuse is still a top basketball program, but they have a new president and a brand new AD with an 81 year old former coaching legend lurking in the background who tries to stay involved. The timing to replace Autry couldn't be worse. And, has Syracuse fully accepted the new model of college basketball? If they have, they are late. Why would a top coach jump into that situation which is why all signs point to GMac.

.-.
Relative success in the Big East in infinitely easier than in the ACC. He will have to compete with 2, maybe 3 programs, versus 8 or 9.
Add to that a new Chancellor and AD at Syracuse, and the fact that he would have to compete with Football.
Still think 'Cuse should hire Bobby Hurley, but I may be the only one. GMac is not ready for prime time, sorry.

Power conference membership doesn't innoculate you from misery apparently. Rutgers, SU and BC finding out that bad decisions are debilitating.

Another home run hire.

Gerry McNamara quickly turned Siena around and there are clear connections he already has with the school, boosters, recruiting trail, etc.

I'd expect a bevy of current and future Saints, especially Doty/Folefac/Moesch/Edmond, to follow their HC upstate. Edmond played at Notre Dame-Fairfield two seasons ago.

My prediction: CCSU's Patrick Sellers replaces McNamara at Siena.

Yep. It would be nice to have the additional cash, but in the end, coaching hires is probably the biggest factor in success.

Great hire. Hated the guy when he played for Cuse. All my Cuse grads down here are cheering and I can see why. Siena with a full team would likely beat Duke

Maybe Hodgkin knew it was GMac's to lose

ARe they really insane enough to believe Wright, Stevens or Donovan would go there? Maybe if they paid 50M/year, but short of that....
Dapper Wright isn’t living in a small town like Syracuse

The other 2 suggestions are ridiculous.

If Providence wants to be the BE #4 team it's theirs for the taking, and with a solid ooc, the BE 4th bid for 2027. As things stand I think the top 3 are a pretty solid UConn, STJ, nova but would like seeing Providence step it up as a strong 4 unlike Shalls failure this year as BE team #4. Hall is close to getting a bid if they trend up even slightly next year starting with a better ooc. BE 5 bids would be a good goal after this year.

The insiders say that Boeheim scared off any candidates that weren't in the family a la Will Ferrell in stepbrothers

Clearly the worst part of the hire is that it presumably indicates that Boeheim will still maintain a reasonable amount of power in the program. We’ve got years, back to the past several years of JBs actual coaching tenure, to show that he should not be anywhere near a college bball program at this point.

FIFY

It quite entertaining to see them now saying Hodgson was never even offered the job.

They can’t fathom he turned them down
