Lafeur's resume seems to fit (along with a number of other coaches), but what makes him a good candidate for Offensive Coordinator? He has one year of experience eight years ago where he was Offensive Coordinator at a division II school. How does being an offensive Q.C. specialist or Quarterbacks coach for the last 7 years qualify him to call plays at a FBS school in 2015? I don't think it does, especially in light of the growing segment of UConn's fan base who believe their current head coach did not have enough prior experience in his current position.
 
LaFluer meets all the Preferred Qualifications as well: Master’s degree; experience as an offensive coordinator or co-coordinator at the collegiate or professional level; playing experience at the collegiate and/or professional level.
  • LaFleur earned a bachelor's degree in physical and health education from Saginaw Valley State in 2003. He achieved a master's degree in science in administration from Central Michigan in 2011.
  • Prior to joining the Texans, LaFleur worked at Ashland University as the offensive coordinator, coaching the quarterbacks and wide receivers.
  • LaFleur played quarterback for three years at Saginaw Valley State (2000-02). He guided the Cardinals to a 29-8 (9-3, 11-2, 9-3) record over his three seasons and led Saginaw Valley to three straight NCAA Division II playoff appearances. The program has not bettered the 9-3 marks either before or since.
 
LaFleur had one year of calling plays and that was 7 years ago at a Division II school. That well below the level of experience that Diaco needs to bring in at this point. I have no interest in somebody who is under Brian Kelly on the offensive side. Kelly runs his offense and few others have input. This is a make or break hire for Diaco as another Cummings hire will put a permanent cloud over Diaco as a head coach. It has to be somebody with a vision for the offense, not someone who has never ran an offense in the FBS or FCS.
 
This might be a little out there, but Mike Groh has coached with Diaco at Virginia, he did go to graduate school, but I have yet to find anything stating he received a master's degree. With the coaching change in Chicago maybe he is looking for work.

Good point... didn't realize that... I still like this guy though... maybe not for OC but he's definitely got a future stepping up in the coaching ranks...

Interesting. Mike Groh fits according to the requirements for the gig, no?:

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree; minimum of six years of full-time experience as an offensive football coach at the collegiate FBS, FCS or NFL within the past 10 years; working knowledge of the correct application of NCAA regulations; strong commitment to the academic goals of the University; and excellent organizational, teaching, communication and public relations skills.

Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree; experience as an offensive coordinator or co-coordinator at the collegiate or professional level; playing experience at the collegiate and/or professional level.
Salary is commensurate with experience.

with Mike Groh you gotta guy that's been around football his entire adult life at the NFL level and P5 conference level... He was recruiter of the year one year at Alabama... recruiter of the year... I like the sound of that... Maybe he's ready... just sayin... I know we want an experienced OC, but if we end up with an old foagie that don't attract the attention of the players we covet most then I don't think we're giving it our all to bringing this program back to being considered a contender for a P5 invite.. just a thought...

Exactly-Quinn makes too much sense to me. I originally left him out of my post yesterday about Molnar because I totally forgot he was fired from Buffalo this year. Just take a look at the points he orchestrated while the OC at Cinci. He's my #1 for sure. Look at the bold highlights below:



"Quinn was named one of five finalists for the 2009 Broyles Award, which is given to the nation’s top assistant coach. I think the timing fits for him too. . . needed to wait until Trestman got canned and Groh was not retained to offer? This also makes more sense as I don't know that Diaco would poach a coach from ND so close to signing day. I would take either one honestly, yes Groh has coordinator experience but does anyone know what those offenses were like? it says he was "relieved of OC duties" after 3 years in 2008.
 
the key is in the title of the position too. Assistant Head Football Coach/Offensive Coordinator. Right now Don Patterson is the Assistant Head Football Coach, but it looks like that is changing as well with this new hire. Has to be Quinn.

Never said pay cut you did. I strongly believed, knowing the history of Cummings and Bob that Cummings wouldn't mind taking over the OL duties (where he belongs) to help benefit the team, and that's exactly what happened.

Here's my few cents:

Required:

1. A guy that is familiar with, and experienced in, and has demonstrated a proven track record of successfully recruiting the territories we need to recruit for college football.
2. A guy that has proven track record of being an offensive coordinator for an offense that can move the ball and score regularly.

Preferred:

Track record of performance of #1 and #2 at division 1A level.
 
Is Charlie Weis still available? I heard he's still making something like 7 million dollars off his last contract so we can get him cheap.

All joking aside, I would be extremely happy with Quinn.

He seemingly has the exact Coaching experience and production we're looking for commensurate with his personnel. I would be comfortable with this hire. And he was an o-line guy too which shouldn't hurt given where we've been.

I hate his W/L record as HC... but he's not gonna be the head guy here so, maybe he does make all the sense... I just hope his hire helps recruiting as well...that is IF he's our guy.

First of all it's Buffalo and he didn't inherit much going in. Secondly the early season away games for them are always tough. They also played a number of close games before he was fired after he had lost a lot of talent from the previous season. It's not cut and dry but the firing seemed a little odd given the timing and circumstances. But I agree it's more about him as an OC than a HC.

That is a coincidence... BUT, no disrespect to Tyree Jackson, but he's a 2 star recruit. If he was more than that (under the radar type that folks believe has huge upside) even Mike Farrell would give him an extra star by now (responses to that last comment should be interesting).

In all seriousness. Quinn is a "safe" pick... Is playing it "safe" the right way to go?

I am not 100% in on Quinn or anything, but why is it a safe hire? Because Diaco knows him?

In UConn's position, to get a guy who was a broyles award finalist and a guy who did pretty decently as a HC at Buffalo (racked up 41 on us in 2013) would be a great hire. I would argue the only reason he would consider it is because of his relationship with Diaco.

Look at these point totals for 2013 Buffalo. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2013_Buffalo_Bulls_football_team 8-5 and a bowl game. He then got fired this year after going 3-4. Not a bad resume for UConn's OC.

EDIT: After writing this I think I am 100% in on the Quinn bandwagon HAHA.

Buffalo also scored 20 points, and played well against #2 Ohio State that whole games until the end. Quinn is a really good OC I wouldn't mind this hire.

I never you said you said that I asked if he was. That would benefit the team as well.
 
I don't know gents. There is something to be said about hiring from winning programs. Quinn's a little too used to losing for my liking. Of course that is an HC record, but I'm so tired of anything related to the upstate NY schtick. The only thing we've seen come out of upstate NY are has-beens, retreads and self proclaimed superstars.

I'm all in on Quinn and hope he is the guy. Broyles award finalist, huge success as a coordinator in the Big East, got fired but Buffalo was better than they've ever been under him, has a relationship Diaco, Patterson and Warde. I'd be shocked if he's not the guy. Based on where our program is today I personally believe we would be lucky to get him and it would only happen based on the relationships in house.
