AP Top 25 Week 14 Feb 3 | The Boneyard

AP Top 25 Week 14 Feb 3

One of the top 7 teams will be champion. Those are the only teams we are in competition with. No one outside of those seven will not win it all.

There is a lot more BB games between the top 10 teams to be played that will impact the rankings. I am keeping an open mind about who or what. I can wait until the end of March to start predicting hoped for results. Of course I want Uconn to go all the way but I can be patient. First we have to concentrate on winning the BE. Then Uconn will be really ready to make a run for NO.12. I attribute our 2 losses as we hadn't yet got our style of play togrther as we do now. I believe the results would be different, especially the So. Cal. game. Ready or not , here we come. GO HUSKIES!!!!!

USC drops 3 places after losing a very close game against Iowa, at Iowa, with a full (and loud) house for honoring Caitlin Clark. UConn moves up one spot after knocking off a cupcake. Let's not complain about the rankings.

USC drops 3 places because they lost to an unranked Iowa team. And who's complaining abut rankings?

Last week, Iowa was unranked and was not receiving any votes so the voters had to move USC down. Obviously the teams between USC's old spot #4 and their new spot #7 had to move up if they were undefeated last week. And that's what happened.

Clearly, we need to win at TN to remain top 7...by the end of the season if we are 4 or 5 and have to play TX, it is probably not a bad scenario (i think ND and SC are better team than TX).

I know polls don't matter, but it's interesting that Sabreena Merchant of The Athletic has UConn ranked 8th behind tOSU. A couple of the other sportswriters have us 7th, which I can understand given the strength at the top this year, but to put us behind a team with a good record but a weaker strength of schedule and a loss to a team with a record of 10-12 makes me think she's not paying attention.
Don’t worry. tOSU has played nobody. They play take their Cali trip this week and play ALL those best Big Ten foes in the next 30 days. If they win, they will deserve the rank. NET matters (some) polls don't.

I loved watching the game Highlights of ex-Villanova star LUCY OLSEN
doing her thing! High efficiency vs High Volume!

Playing South Carolina will tell me everything I need to know about this team. Losing won’t be the end all be all but it would tell me what we can expect moving forward. The only team I think that is built to beat us is Notre Dame. They are the only team that has guards as good as ours and better bigs. No one else does. We have better guards than everyone else but some teams have better bigs. If our bigs can’t neutralize the other bigs and they force us to guard their bigs then we can lose. But that doesn’t mean that this will happen. But against Notre Dame and UCLA to a slightly lesser extent, they can match us in talent. Those two teams and Texas and South Carolina playing unreal defense can beat us. But I honestly think only Notre Dame is built to beat us.

Iowa has been pretty pedestrian this year so let's not pretend like that wasn't a bad loss.

No team will remain undefeated and I would almost best the farm no team will only have one loss. UConn has one difficult game remaining on its schedule and if they win they will be a high 1 seed and if they don't they really don't deserve to even be considered. To me they haven't proven they can win a big game and with the roster being available they will no excuses.

ND to me is the team most likely to be the overall 1 seed in the tournament. They don't have too much left on the schedule and they have wins against a few of the top teams. It will be a fun finish just like it is every year.

Today's AP still has ZERO votes for Iowa after handling USC (by 7 pts after leading by 1 going into the 4th QTR) on their home court with the scheduled retirement ceremony for CC's #22.
Looks like Iowa will have to also knock off UCLA to get any votes for the top 25.:D:cool:

In Big 10 play Iowa's 5 wins are against teams with a combined 15-36 record. If you take out the upset win against USC it's a record of 6-35. While there 6 losses are against a combined record of 42-21. The win in yesterday's game was because of the retirement of CC's jersey and a hyped up crowd and team.

Agreed. Also, just worth observing, they got beat by Addison O'Grady and a couple other folks. I'm kidding, don't get all upset. But seriously, Iriafen would have been happy with Addison's stat line, especially the 6 fewer TOs and better shooting. And equally seriously, I'd take Lucy Olsen's stat line over Juju's as well.

The fact that O'Grady had a great 4th quarter against them is impressive [13 pts on 6-8 shooting, 4 rebounds and a block in 20 mins]. She has definitely upped her game this season with an elbow jumper and some decent post moves. She was practically invisible the past three seasons. But this season she has become a force for them.

That's because Iowa was in real danger of missing the tournament before USC game. They had been the 13th of 13 big10 teams predicted in recently. Iowa is 15-7, in Big10 5-6.

Unless USC game marks a turnaround, Iowa could still lose another 4 games and be right back in danger again.

Why should Iowa get any top 25 votes for 1 good game?

Yesterday doesn’t erase that they lost to Oregon Indiana Illinois and Nebraska recently while barely beating northwestern.

Before the win, Iowa was 14-7, 4-6 in the Big 10 where it’s the 12th best team. On the road or not, losing to unranked Iowa was not good. And UConn didn’t move up because they ”beat a cupcake”, it’s actually two, but because USC moved down.

If we’re being picky in unranked Iowa at the time. I don’t think Connecticut has anything to complain about with their seating at the moment.

South Carolina is a team that really scares me. They are incredibly athletic and have started shooting from distance a whole lot more efficiently if their shooting is remotely on any team is in for a long night.

Maryland has really dropped in the rankings.
In 2 weeks they've gone from #8 to #16.
Since Jan. 20 Maryland has lost 4 out of 5 games, to Texas, Ohio State, UCLA & Illinois.

Poffenbarger is getting the 4th most mins on the team @ 27.7 mins/game and second in rebounding although she hasn't started (much), but her shooting % not so good: 38.6% O/all, 29.1% from 3 pt range; she also had high rebounds in 9 games, and was the high scorer in three games (including Vs. UCLA with 18 pts & Mir had 2nd high with 12).
Mir @ 14.3 mins, 4.1 pts, 4.5 rebs, 45.5%; DeBerry @ 9.1 mins, 2.6 pts, 1.2 rebs, 48.5%.
At the time Texas #7, OSU #12, UCLA #1, and Illinois now has the exact record as MD. The one win vs. PSU who is the #17 team in the Big Ten [which is fun to write: #17 of 10; 18 teams in the Big Ten ]:D:cool:

However, 10 may make the NCAA Big Dance and the 11th place team may win the WNIT...

I wasn’t drinking the Maryland Kool Aid earlier. I was astonished that they’d moved up to #8. With McDaniel out for the season, things didn’t improve, and luckily Sellers’s injury wasn’t as bad as feared. Brenda has done a good job, but I think they’ll be closer to 25 than to 10 at the end of the season. Unranked wouldn’t shock me.
