AP preseason first team

Love the thought that doing things to help make better players would somehow disadvantage a program.

That train of thought falls off the tracks
The issue is that you think there is only one way to procure that player, as part of a dated mindset and system. When the current system affords multiple ways of doing so

I realize you get giddy off raising some HS player into a lottery pick through multi year development, but it's no more impressive than taking an underutilized transfer with potential and making that player better and productive for the program.

Yaxel is very, very good and excellent all around. He's got a bit of Cooper Flagg to his game that way. He finds ways to fill the box score and is a big athlete. I actually think he'll make a leap under Dusty, who finds ways to maximize his talent. JT is absolutely deserving and likely second best lock next to Smith.

I'm with you that I'm taking a lot of players in front of Condon. I don't get that pick at all. Perhaps the love for AJ over the other two frosh is simply on how their coach will use him.
I think Yaxel will be a lottery pick this year. He was a 1st rounder last year but knew he could step it up a level. He’s fun to watch.

I’ll believe it when I see the next Steph, Ja, Dame, or even JDub get developed from the transfer portal.

Or someone perform like a Jimmer.

Most lottery picks are OAD - let’s drop the development please.

That's why he's naming players like Steph and Dame from 15 years ago.
Just dying to find the diamond in the rough and develop. Take on all that risk when you don’t have to. Smarter to see what a kid has for 2 years at college level and polish up.

It's a crappy group of players. We used to live in a proper society where college basketball players would have a full spread in Playboy magazine.

And count me in the group that Braden Smith is overrated.
Smith will most likely break Hurley all time NCAA assist record. Not many college players at that level.

We picked up a 1st team AA from the portal just couple of years ago. He was the 43rd ranked player in the portal by 24/7 and On3 didn't have him the Top 100. He developed somewhere.

Yaxel is not very good & is not even close to the talent Flagg is- lol. Reason why he came back to college- his defense is limited at best- I do agree he should get better with his new coach- I don’t expect a huge season from him- time will tell.

I'm sure he's due for a Welcome to the Big 10 by other teams as UAB to Michigan is a conference step up and he may not be the best player in that conference.

He has to work on his D and his turnovers. Not realistic for him to go 40% at 3 so he is not a true floor stretcher, but on the plus side he's an offensive menace and great passer.

No one is saying he’s Flagg, but he averaged 17pts, 11 rebounds and 4 assists a game, two blocks. This as a 6’9” athletic big. He’s pretty much ranked top 3 player across the board analytically this year. Not Flagg level, the point is that he’s of similar size and fills the stat sheet across everything and is athletic.

Also helps UM unloaded the cash truck for him.
Ya I think he’s soft & not as skilled or as athletic as he needs to be if he is going to be soft at the NBA level. The Big Ten will increase the athleticism & physicality so I don’t see him have the same impact as he did at UAB or what certain people might think he will be this year. Also, I hear he has some ongoing injury concerns.

You’re not necessarily wrong, but I think that step up gets exaggerated.

These coaches and analysts are evaluating guys pretty thoroughly, and the level of play difference isn’t as great as it may seem.

If he’s grading out that well and all the big time D1 coaches wanted him in the portal, I don’t see the competition level being that big of a leap. I’m sure he’ll adjust fine, but I haven’t done any personal eval. Just my 2 cents.

This is a narrative that has been ran with without much thought behind it. Because it’s untrue, for basketball at least.

If you want to say role players are better today I’m with you and I agree. I remember watching Chuck Hayes have a multi year NBA career. Wouldn’t sniff a roster today.

But the stars are not better today. All this stuff has been good at developing role players.

I would go into examples, but you’ll ignore them like you just ignored the ones from 2019.

That seems to track with Martin, Cole, Hass and Newton at least, I think those are the only ones in the Hurley era (excluding Reed). Hope that is at least as big a jump for Reed on a per minute basis. I didn't realize he put up better numbers last year than at Michigan in about 7 fewer MPG.

Florida is starting to get Duke levels of smoke blown up their arses

Because the SEC is now ESPN’s main player for basketball.
Just like when dook was in their prime and ESPN would shill for the ACC.

Yes, guys get better their 2nd year at a place. Pretty common sense.
Given you hate it, you clearly did not read it as you didn't address it properly. It points to the value of a sophomore transfer as data shows there is a material jump after sophomore year. There is a lot of value in identifying high upside sophomores who have had the opportunity to play at the collegiate level so you can evaluate, and grabbing in the portal. Versus taking a HS player at key positions, like PG, which is the QB of the offense, and asking them to run a detailed system and adjusting to the college game simultaneously. Net net, very smart to get the PG in the portal. It reduces risk and the kid has already had a chance to adjust to the college level. For Hurley to use the portal for that position specifically, it's strategic.

I could see this being the position where he repeatedly uses the portal.

Any player that you put at the forefront will get better from year 1 to year 2. This benefit is not excluded to just transfers lol

Nobody has suggested giving a fresh out of HS recruit the keys to an offense either unless they are an elite talent (like Castle). That’s not something anyone has ever done except in rare cases. The discussion has never been filling your starting position with a freshman vs a transfer.

It's like a kid who won't eat his broccoli.

I'm going to ignore it or call it bad and stick to my obsolete example from 20 years ago.
Could you imagine if I tried making fun of you for you not listening to me explain baseball to you? As someone who doesn’t even know what finger combinations go into throwing pitches.

That’s what’s happening here.
