Its says unanimous, but if I understand the link correctly, Rebecca Lobo has UConn #1??? Why am I confused?

Surprised SCar is still unanimous number one. We sure looked beatable in both our games.

My eyeball test is not impressed
SC deserves the NO 1 ranking until they lose their first game. They are undefeated and NC. UCONN will be on their heels waiting for that first loss. This year it will be between6 top teams who will end up NO 1. I'm picking UCONN.I expect my heart rate will spike several times this year as the season progresses, with UCONN giving me my 92nd birthday present, NO12 which is my Avatar. GO HUSKIES!!!!

I believe the Massey ratings are still using some data from last season right now. I think it takes a certain amount of games before it's fully in this season.
Masset uses the last 10 games. It won't completely reflect this season until each team has reached that number.

UConn was ranked 2nd preseason, but after the first game they moved to 3rd, behind Stanford....it will adjust every game if needed.

Computer really liked Stanford's 66% team average from 3.:D

It's not a specific fixed number. The holdover effect from the previous season disappears gradually to zero ("exponential decaying memory" for our stats nerds out there).

I hope you get the birthday present you so richly deserve. This could turn out to be a season to remember, and I mean in a fans view, not from a BY view. All or maybe all but a few here recite facts about games played 20 years ago as if the games were played yesterday. I hope you get many more great games and seasons to celebrate. While I hate to say it, I agree with you about SC deserving #1 until they taste the bitter bite of defeat and realize that the Husky Nation is alive and on the precipice of dominance and for you and the rest of us #12, a new banner, trophy and bragging rights for winning the Natty.

I agree that the champ is No. 1 until SOMEBODY beats them.

Now, I disagree with you seeing number 12 as a 92nd birthday present. I hope it’s your 102nd birthday instead ( and may it be a joyous and memorable birthday. :) ) and mat Geno still be skipping the sidelines on that day

The coaches' poll is out, and South Carolina missed two #1 votes, one each going to UConn and Southern California.

Having seen all three play now, I get UConn getting a #1 vote, but am totally baffled by how enamored voters are with U$C.

Well, unlike SCar and UConn, U$C did open with a ranked team

That would have been taken into account in last week's poll. This past week, USC played Cal Poly and Cal State-Northridge, two Big West teams. I mean no offense to USC since most ranked teams use mid-majors to knock off the rust, just pointing out that the reason for the 1st place vote was last week, not this week and is, indeed, puzzling.

Do you get more credit for beating a higher ranked team in the NET ratings? If that's the case, what's the benefit of being ranked let's say 1-4 early in the season? There are only a few teams ranked higher than you...and none if you are ranked #1. IMO...all these ranking services have strengths and weaknesses, but I believe that the eye test is underrated. At this early stage in the season filled with what amounts to a lot of exhibition games...maybe they should start ranking after more than a few games?

It's totally subjective and there are no specific criteria. That's why it's so exasperating that people get wound up over polls.

A reminder - polls have nothing to do with NCAA tournament, or any tournament, seeding. They are only entertainment for fans and for, I guess, bragging rights.

There are no. NET ratings at this point. They don’t start until about the time everybody has played ten games. Massey doesn’t drop ( mostly) it’s prior-season-bias until about the same time.

If everybody had my eyes, I would agree with you. Alas, they aren’t. Perfect like me - even the members of the AP
