AP Awards for WNBA

I don't think stat padding really works well for percentages. 50/40/90 is a heck of a feat regardless of if it's 33 or 44 games, but I also feel like 50/40/90 is a rather arbitrary statistic people are clinging to in order to make a sales pitch for Collier when in reality A'ja's shooting splits are right there.
Delle Donne shot 50/40/90 while playing all 34 games that season . I can't compare a player missing 11 games and making the 50/40/90 club in the very last game of the season as the same .

A'ja is 1st in points, 1st in rebounds, 1st in blocks, and tied for 2nd in steals (all per game averages).
Phee is 2nd in points, 12th in rebounds, tied for 4th in blocks, and tied for 2nd in steals.

Those stats seem more relevant to me than free throw percentage, but what to do I know.
I'm a bit puzzled by your inclusion of steals. If in fact that stat is so important, Phee is slightly ahead of A'ja on steals per game (3rd and 4th, not 2nd). Funny you'd choose to include steals but not assists, or turnovers, or A/TO ratio... but what do I know.

Also, not sure rebounds and blocks are fair apples to apples comparators since A'ja is a true 5 and Phee is not.

I'm not in the camp that says FT% or 50-40-90 should decide it. I have a bigger issue with the fact that for half a season the Aces and A'ja were both unremarkable and underachieving. But no disputing that she and her team have turned it around and are on fire lately, and recency counts for a lot in these things. Also no doubt the fact that Phee missed more games than A'ja works against her as well.

No nefarious motives here, bud. ESPN's WNBA lead statistics page for players doesn't show turnovers or A/TO, and neither Phee nor A'ja were anywhere in the top anything in assists to be worth reporting. And I'm confused by the link you sent, because both Phee and A'ja are listed at 1.6 steals per game, so I'm not sure what I got wrong there (1.6 = 1.6?), and again, per ESPN, they excluded Lacan for not playing enough games.

But man, gotta say, with no horse in this race, some of the Phee Phans are awfully salty about any arguments that don't favor her, which is weird to me - they both have great cases after having amazing seasons. I get that it's a homer board, but let's not lose complete sight of objectivity...

Edited to add: this site has even better stats. A few other notable stats: A'ja is also #1 in player efficiency rating, total win shares, offensive win shares, defensive win shares, and defensive rating, and #6 in offensive rating. Phee is #2, #2, #2, #5, #3, and #2 respectively. (As an aside, I was delighted to see my girl VB is 8th in win shares.)

All good points. I was using the WNBA's stats page, not ESPN's.

The steals stat is a nitpick, but those numbers are rounded and Napheesa is listed ahead of A'ja because had the higher unrounded average.

What's wild is I truly didn't care about this award until I saw a certain coach-turned-insurance-hawker give her version of the “If my person loses it's because it was rigged” spiel.

Congrats to A'ja on her fantastic MVP season ☺️

Well here's a season ending award I think we can all agree on (or at least 68 of 72 of us!):

Burton was a revelation this season. I'm still really sad about Thornton's injury. She was having a heckuva season.

Paige had a great year but was on the worst team in the league, and she is not a great defender either.
Her defense is pretty good for a rookie. Paige ended the season #6 in steals (among all players, not just rookies) and #30 in blocks from the guard position. If Koclanes weren’t so determined to run Paige into the ground, she would have been more active on defense. I know I’m a homer but considering what was expected of her, I think Paige did very well

Wilson's appeal to me has increased the longer she's been away from said coach.

One would have to be an dyed in the wool anti-homer (dare I say, a Domer?) to say anything other than that Paige exceeded her absurdly high expectations for her rookie season. She's already one of the top players in the league and she was surrounded with a B to C team and a struggling coach. She will do fantastic things in the W as soon as she has teammates who can even proximately match her greatness.

I believe bballnut is a Lady Vol fan

Congratulations Coach Nakase and it wasn't even close! How many Fireball shots is this worth tonight? @TheFarmFan 😁 😉

FYI - wasn't sure if the WNBA awards were in a separate thread. My bad if there is one as I didn't see it at time of posting.

Unfortunately all my season ticket buddies can't join tonight, but my 82-year-old mother lives in San Jo, so she'll be joining me in their stead. Hopefully I can coax Mama FarmFan into taking a "Family Shot" because it'll have an extra dual meaning tonight! 😂 (And considering the can of Whoop@$$ the Lynx opened on us on Sunday, lord knows we'll probably need to be taking them...)

I believe a "Family Sip" would be considered acceptable in this case. 😉 Have fun!!!

Ill Allow It GIF

Naz Hillmon 6th woman! Go Naz! Go Blue!

Pretty happy for Naz. Great young lady Well deserved honor.

Veronica, like Naz, is a great example of players for the right coach, with the right system, and a coach that really believes in them.
