Any recruits left??

I understand that a coaching change results in recruits changing their mind. That said, our class of 15 is now down to 10. From the recruiting board it looks like most of them have received offers from Mora at CSU which is not surprising and should happen with any good coach.

Looking at the guys who decommitted, I see kids with long offer lists of higher level schools. Clearly these were top level recruits for us. Not sure about the remaining 10 but DB has gotta get someone in here soon. Not sure we can get those 5 guys back but we need to keep some of these guys or get new ones.

Hopefully Kiffin finally leaving has started the dominoes. The SEC schools that needed coaches have now filled their spots and MSU got their guy. Hopefully we’ll follow suit soon.

I would expect probably 4 of the remaining 10 high school recruits to be gone after NLI early signing day on Wednesday. Maybe a few choose not to sign this period and wait to see what happens. With all the staff changes around CFB they will be roster churn pieces to pick up come the next NLI day first week of February.

So likely 6 kids? Ooph that’s rough. We’ve been pulling in some good recruits these past two years. Gotta hope whoever we hire can keep that momentum.

Then again, I feel like the portal has helped us more than HS recruits. We’ll need to see but keeping 6 out of a class of 15 hurts. However, I know this turnover happens everywhere when coaches leave. It likely happens more here because there’s not much else to draw you here without the coach who recruited you.

There will be plenty of kids to scoop up once the smoke clears. Just not the kids the staff worked their ass off to get committed. The HS portion will go on as long as the rules allow. Was Cam Edwards mulling over multiple offers at or above our level? May have to get our hands dirty with some at risk kids, but who cares, it’s the game we are playing.

100% agree, “winning” signing day is fun, but with the portal, it’s really not that important anymore.

Hopefully guys from the past two classes stay and are ready to contribute next season.

HS recruits dont matter. We can pick them off the scrap heaps of other schools when they rot on the bench there for a season or two.

I know some guys hit the portal but stay with the team. Do some recruits decommit due to uncertainty and end up signing anyway? I'm guessing no because someone else probably talked them into decommitting. I'm not sure the recruits are a big deal. The portal is where the team is going to be built. Older, stronger and more experienced players. I would think with an active coaching carousel comes an active portal.

We’ve seen players decommit/recommit in the past. Sometimes their new suitors don’t pan out, sometimes their nervous and fishing for new interest, etc

This is why I think we would be better off hiring an FBS coach who will bring some recruits with him. With the large turnover of our roster each year we can't afford to have a down year while the new coach tries to rebuild the roster. The new coach can hit the portal hard in January but he will be limited by the amount of NLI money that will be available to him. I Hate seeing us lose what was going to be Mora's best recruiting class.

I think if you're a player on a team where the coach quits, it's smart to enter the portal while you're waiting to see how things pan out. So, yeah, I would imagine some of those will end up staying once a coach is hired and that coach "re-recruits" them. TBH, this is the way things are anyway in the current environment. If you had a good year, you see what you're getting offered in the portal. Even if Mora stayed, he'd have to re-recruit his own guys.

I read maybe he isn’t switching too. So who knows. FWIW Unless he has family on the team i would worry about a guy who wants to stay that close to home. We’ll see I guess.

I can think of Edwards and Rosa his first season. Who else? I’m sure the list isn’t long so it’s really about finding a coach who can work the portal successfully and identify players that fit their system and have the mentality they want.

The downside (?) of the Mora era is that he dramatically downsized the HS recruiting classes. That said, some of the portal guys came to UConn with 2 or more years of eligibility left which somewhat offsets the scaled back HS recruiting. For this recruiting year, I would anticipate a large portal class and a very small HS class.
