Any news on Michigan start time?

Legitimate question... how much of the "gates open" time is a function of a "UConn decision" versus a State property/East Hartford P & Z agreement (similar to decibel level restriction)? I'm still looking for details when approved but figured an East Harford denizen might now.

Speculation of course, but a couple reasons that RV's are not allowed in early are: 1) The state is on the hook for extra security. 2) Rentschler is not a true RV camp site with the infrastructure for utilities and waste disposal.

Whatever the reason, it's one of the low hanging fruit that should be a no brainer to invest in.

its the state and the management of the facility. not uconn. which is my point. i would love to rant about how we should buy the rent etc etc. BUT on a serious note, the state just committed 2 billion to uconn for x y and z. how is it that we can not as a school get the gates open earlier? is it a phone call some 1 is to lazy to make? is it a law in the town that you can't tailgate or what is it. find out the reason and tell the media so the fans know why. if its a pushable thing then let the fans put pressure do it from there. if its some crazy thing like tailgating more than 4 hours before a game will kill all the baby seals in the world then at least the fans know and we can focus on something else. is the management cheap? is the state cheap? what is it? the lots should be open from friday at 5pm to sunday at noon. end of dam story.

the bottom line is u need to pressure ppl. bitching doesn't get it done. so im not tailgating this year at all because im not going to games. if others did this then eventually uconn will wonder why its lots are empty.

It was the deal the State cut with Pratt & Whitney when they were given the land for free. Maybe the state should have threatened not to take it for free if it didn't come with less restrictions.

Right. Which is why I try to spend time with ANY high ranking person in the University that I can. And when I do, I let them know about things I like and don't like. If everyone does so, change will happen.

BTW - any of you coming to the event at the Public House in NYC tomorrow?

I'm in the city but unaware o the event. Can you share details? Thanks,

No, but it wouldn't hurt to have a conversation along the lines of : "if we invest in proper infrastructure and security improvements- how amenable would you be to expanded hours for limited events?"

Lot opening time is about OT for the parking lot staff, and not much else. Do the math.

4+3+1=8. Stagger half the shift by an hour each way and bingo. No OT.

Well in theory, They are working on Saturday. They get time x1.5 anyway. ;)

Sorry, not convinced it's an only a OT/$$ issue. I get the Pratt security issue. There is a decibel level restriction in place currently and I thought there were other concessions made @ the time for the residential neighbors. Could be wrong, but hours of operation were in the mix. Gonna keep looking.

It's the Communications / Media / PR networking event. At the Public House on E41st. 6:30. They say they are allowing walk-ins.

Being more flexible with the lots is one thing. Noon on Sunday? So 8 wierdos in RVs can camp in East Hartford?

It's those weirdos that make a programs fan base. That we only have 8 is the problem.

At other schools they park in bare fields with a few portajohns. Or at WalMart. Security adjacent to a defense contractor is a legit issue.

The lowest, no-brainiest. Lots should open at 7 for a noon game, 9 for 3:30, and noon for night games.

I doubt there is still a Pratt security issue. The buildings closest to the Rent are now surrounded by fencing. When there is an event certain gates are closed. This didn't exist when the Rent first opened so it may have been an issue back then. I doubt Pratt would object to changing the rule if asked.

First of all our fanbase is local. They aren't driving 6 hours across Nebraska. 95% of the fans have to come from within an hour.

Secondly they park on or near campuses. You know with actual people and things to do nearby.

There is nothing you can walk to besides Cabella's in East Hartford. Who in their right mind would sleep there?

I'm with you for 3:30 and night games. I just don't see a need for the extra hour before a noon game, unless its an RV.

The lots unofficially open before 8:00 as it is. We've entered prior to 8:00 and a full row is already parked, tents are up and grills are lit and set up prior upon our arrival. I'm not talking about just recently pushed the ignition button. I mean people are already filling their breakfast tortilla.

There is no problem with a lot full of 100,000 dollar rv s. it's not cousin eddy and his steel plate in his head coming

But if they open up at 7 who will get there before then to set up all those pretty orange cones? You're simply not thinking.

There are signs on Alabama's campus that read, "no parking on green before noon on Thursday." They do not alter that based on whether kickoff is at 230 or 8.

Alabama is a state of 4.8 Million people spread over 50,000 sq miles.

Connecticut is a state of 3.5 Million crammed into 4800, sq. miles.

I believe it is a decent assumption that the number of 5th wheel trailers emulates the land area rather than population as well. :p

With 2 of my kids at wvu and tosu I am able to attend at least 1 game at each campus yearly. Football games are a weekend long event with a large majority of fans. These fan bases are multi-generational and if staying in an rv or in a hotel, they get there the day before. It is hard enough that we have an off campus stadium but the inability have extended rv and tailgaiting makes us look small time to other large universities. This is a problem we need to address asap.

I bet this conversation might have happened already and P&W wasn't convinced. If it didn't happen, it might the case that UConn wants the conversation to happen but the State (who would be the ones doing the improvements) has other priorities.

What's the problem? I don't get it. "The inability have extended rv and tailgaiting makes us look small time to other large universities". It does? Why? We are not a southern or midwest school. Our fanbase doesn't live in areas where a 100 mile round trip to the Walmart is the highlight of the week. It doesn't make sense for us to compare ourselves to that. If gates opened x-number of hours earlier it wouldn't sell one extra ticket. It would be added cost without added benefit. I get there when the gates open and it's not like there are a ton of people with me. Can't we move on from this issue?

How rich with irony that some of the same posters arguing uconn's georaphically small size and majority fan base's proximity to the stadium indicates there is no need to change tailgating rules.

Yet when mention is made of an on campus stadium, that extra 25 miles to storrs is made to sound like it's a million miles over the world's tallest mountains and deepest oceans.

One has nothing to do with the other.

The argument against on campus stadium is the realization that the appropriate infrastructure is not in place and would cost $$hundreds of millions that the state does not have, on top of the ($125 million, minimum) cost for a new stadium.

Support your point. What tailgating rules need to be changed and what are the tangible benefits? I'm being honest, I don't see any. At best a few meet the standard of nice to have.

Your second point is just silliness since you left off the $1B (OK, maybe $750M) it would cost. Might as well be a million miles.

I'm just saying you don't need to worry about RVs. By all means open the lots longer.

I don't want this discussion to devolve into a campus/off campus stadium debate.

I think we all feel game day atmosphere can be improved. So f the ideal is a beautiful fall afternoon, centered around a football game, is it possible for uconn to have the rv-like, multi-day atmosphere of a big program? There are only 6 or 7 home games. UConn needs each game to be a must see event. Obviously the quality of the game is paramount, but if a lot was opened up turs or fri afternoon for tailgating thru saturday, would there be interest? Short answer most likely would be, "no", for most games, but how about announcing it for the michigan game? let that week be one huge tailgating/party. let the high school kids do stupid stuff, let middle aged guys party like it's 1990. Build it up as the most fun in all of connecticut.

baby steps. learn from the experience.

What Rumrunner said. Michigan warrants an exception. In future years, maybe it's Tennessee. Pick the biggest game of the year - that's your tailgating exception- allow RVs 24 hours prior to kickoff, allow tailgating all day the day of. There's a cost in staffing, police OT- but I would argue that's minimal. It's worth the investment to treat the biggest game of the year like an event. It's a celebration, btches!

What strikes me profoundly sad about this discussion, is that everything y'all talking about should be the homecoming game every year. That's the game that's supposed to be what this stuff happens around and everyone is geared for. Homecoming against a conference rival. Our path through intercollegiate athletics from the 1970s to the 2010s around basketball, has left us with no football homecoming game that matters. We need to schedule a non-conference game every year that matters for the foreseeable future. Sad.

It is what it is though. Bring on Michigan. Bring on Tennessee. Bring on BYU. Bring on Boston College. We need more of those types of opponents Mr. Warde Manuel.

We also need to win, and win big, win like the football has never done yet at the 1A level.

Winning....that will really help the game day experience, making the stadium the place to be in CT on a Saturday, more than anything else. Winning.

I second the RV admittance for a big game yearly. Has Global Spectrum taken over yet?

Let's move on to something that affects more than a handful of patrons. Where can we have a football catch in the Blue Lot without getting hassled by a 14 year old in a yellow windbreaker? This is an even easier fix than the RV situation.
