Americans Abroad

I'm not feeling good about Beckham United in the black hole of sports towns, Miami, nor a second LA team, either.

St Louis, San Antonio, and Sacramento would be my choices for the next round of MLS team after Minnesota as they have proven fan bases and potential owners who are not looking for a new revenue stream (Atlanta, LA) or a new marketing toy to play with (Miami).

Also have concern surrounding the stadium issues for 2 of the 'big' MLS teams. At least DC United's stadium issue has finally been resolved after over a decade. It would actually ironic once they do leave JFK for Buzzard Point, if the NFL Redskins build a new stadium where RFK sits today.

As for the two big teams, NYC FC actually sent a survey to fans with respect to their opinions as to where a stadium should be built and what it should include. I am not sure if that is good or bad. All I do know is that Yankee Stadium is not the solution for them.

Not surprisingly, talk of the New England Revolution getting a new soccer only stadium just south of downtown Boston disappeared as soon as Boston's Olympic bid met an early death. No one will say it; but, Kraft looks to have been involved in the bid so that someone else would foot the bill for his soccer stadium (a downsized main post-Olympic venue). For those who say Kraft is not like that, just ask about his reaction when the town of Foxborough torpedoed his attempt to win one of the stat's casino license for a complex at Patriot's place, or when the state back-off giving him Federal Tiger funds to build a private pedestrian bridge over Route 1 to link the properties his owns, or the city of Hartford. I feel bad for the Revs, they may never get a stadium until they get a new owner.

No shock there. I'm a Patriots fan who loves Kraft, but I can't root for the Revs because of the way he managed the team. Vamos Orlando!

A kid I coached, gave up a scholarship and is playing for FC Bad Gastien in Austria.

saw that Yedlin came on at 75' for Sunderland - so his +/- was +2. Anyone see how he did? Did he contribute to the 2 goals in the tie?

Could be, but heading to an Austrian Alps spa town near Salzburg is far from the most drastic move to escape bad coaching. ;) Good luck to the kid.

LOL, he is a big skier too, so he is in heaven skiing and playing soccer.

Miazga did not have a good day starting for Chelsea and was pulled at half.

"Matt Miazga - Rating: 5, Second-game syndrome for the young American. He looked out of his depth and was replaced at half-time. The rigours of the Premier League are just too much for him."

That whole sale puzzled me. It was like Chelsea lost a bet and had to buy him. He's good, but not really at that level yet.

I think Chelsea wanted to snatch him up before it was too late. I agree he may not exactly be ready for a regular role in a top flight EPL club ... but how much longer did you expect he would be available?

I never thought he would go to a big club like Chelsea. Miazga is good, but he's not big club good. Yesterday kind of showed that.

Unfortunately, that is what a lot of the big English and Spanish clubs do nowadays with their wallets. They buy any youth that any potential to make it to the big show. While a few make it, most don't and once that potential is washed away, the big club loans said player to the hinterlands. It's the mid-size clubs that should buy the young rising stars so that these kids can get lots of field time and develop before hitting the big show. But, it costs more money for a top tier team to buy a rising star on a mid-level club that it does to by them as an undeveloped youth some. Thus, the by low strategy works for a business perspective for the big clubs.

nice, short write up on Pulisic and how he is a "fully fledged" member of Dortmund's first team.

LINK

"He's a teenager in his first year of professional football. His first two games in the starting eleven were in Leverkusen and here today in Schalke - not the easiest of tasks. It shows our huge appreciation that we see him as a full time player on our team. He was a valuable substitute against Werder Bremen and Liverpool. He has looked really good recently which has been proved today. It is completely normal that he could not have played with this pace and this intensity for over 90 minutes." -Thomas Tuchel; Source: BVB.de

The club's Sporting Director Michael Zorc had the most glowing praise for Pulisic after the performance when he gushed over the youngster's talents and skill set.
"He really made the game move, especially in the first 30 minutes. You could not catch him because of his speed and agility."

I was at the game. Brutal "challenge"Look at this! Darlington Nagbe has ankle sprain, contusion after de Jong tackle

I hope he gets some European looks for next year. We need to microwave some of the 24-28 yr olds to go with the stalwarts like Geoff Cameron and the up and comers like Pulisic and Miazga for 2018

Nagbe is the best we have at holding the ball. I hope NDJ gets a ten game suspension. de Jong is the same guy who broke Stu Holden's leg.

Zelalem was subbed in for Rangers in The Old Firm derby (one of the oldest, and at one time ugliest/fiercest rivalries in football) v Celtic - it's a Scottish FA Cup semi-final match. Game is in AET, tied 2-2 in 115th minute

Pulisic scores his first Bundeskiga goal to open the scoring.
Zelalem converts a PK during shootout, helping Rangers upset Cektic in Scottish Cup semi-final.

If Landon Donovan actually wanted to play soccer then his name would be Christian Pulisic.

Yes, he slept with your wife and sucks, we get it. Do you realize that your obsession with Donovan actually reflect on you at this point.

I would be thrilled to see Pulisic have the international career that Landon Donoval had. When he gets 50% there, wake me up.

Pulisic will have the international career that Donovan should have had.

Remember Freedy Adu? Pulisic isn't even 18 yet. Let's give the kid some time to develop at the club level and on the USMNT before we anoint him as the next coming of (insert name).

As for Donovan, personality quirks and other issues aside, for better or worse, he is still one of the best US soccer players in history.

Agree 100% on both points!

Freddy Adu debuted with DC United.

CP is playing regularly with the second biggest club in Germany and one of the most visible clubs in Europe. And it's not even close to a gimmick like Freddy was.

Anyone catch Landycakes Heineken commercial that played all weekend? Yeesh.

Bringing it back on point... it was a great weekend for a VERY young Pulisic. He is the age of most HS juniors/seniors, and he scored a goal in his 7th ever Bundesliga game. Almost as big as that, they played him the full 90 minutes, so his fitness and strength is getting to a world class level. That is massive. I think he will be a big damn deal for USMNT in the future. He is not a project (Adu, Green, etc..., he is match fit).

Would like to see Zelalem start scoring goals from the run of play for Rangers. Read an article that he is the ONLY field player for Rangers who has yet to score from run of play, all season. Does have some assists though. That said, he was their 4th selected PK taker in the shootout, which shows confidence... as not only was it a semi-final Cup match, but even bigger point is it was against the most bitter of rivals (the Old Firm derby makes a Yankees v Red Sox rivalry look more like a Civil ConFLiCT in comparison). Good for him. Hoping Rangers will play him a full 90 now that they've already clinched promotion, and clinched a spot in Scottish Cup final. Time will tell.

Don't forget Hyndman. He's a touch older, but he is pretty much Michael Bradley's successor.

Hyndman, Pulisic and Zelalem are the model. Signed by prestigious European Academies at a young age. Equipped to deal with the challenges of soccer across the pond, and they actually want to play soccer.

We've had our share European washouts because our scouting is deeply flawed. Mentally, those three players are different than the Altidores. These guys are basically Clint Dempsey type players who escaped college soccer.
