You don’t see a difference between a play predicting a championship in the future versus saying they would have won a championship in the past? One is confidence or hubris. The other is somewhat delusional and disrespectful.

Hey, the article is fine. As someone pointed out, it’s pretty typical for this sorry of thing. But it’s not above criticism. South Carolina has been criticized for many quarters for its incessant talk about “winning” last year’s championship. No other team has done that. The criticism is fair and, frankly, entirely to be expected.
“We’re going to get that championship,” Williams said Monday at Geno Auriemma’s annual Fore The Kids charity golf tournament. “People are going to feel UConn. We’re going to win the national championship.”

No, I don’t see any particular difference. At least Boston is speaking based on a completed season in which the team was (or was going to be) the #1 overall seed.

Look, as a SC fan, I want nothing more than to move on from last year. I wish they’d stop talking about it, too. It adds pressure and it’s not a topic that’s going anywhere anyway, since it’s not like the 2020 championship is going to be played. But some of the comments on here seem a bit jaded.

Yeah the name-calling and sneering at a kid who, in the manner of young adults, speaks with only a mild filter, is rather appalling. What to think of an adult that needs to rip up a kid because he disagrees with her or to call her names because she doesn’t fit his definition of “mature”? I have my opinion on that but as I’ve noted in the past, it’s OK to have an unspoken opinion.

"Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and to remove all doubt" ~variously attributed to Abe Lincoln, Mark Twain, and Maurice Switzer
Shameful that this teenaged sophomore doesn't fit an adult's definition of maturity. Shameful!

This exactly. Yes.
It is what is. If you would have replaced Boston with Paige or another UConn player in that article the negative feedback would have been positive I am sure. I am glad some see the article for what it really is. It is from her point a view.

UCONN fans barely acknowledge the title that South Carolina won on the court, but I have to say they are surprisingly passionate in defense of last season's non-championship.

I think it is an open question whether Oregon or South Carolina should have been considered the favorite and Baylor probably deserves more mentions than they get.

It wouldn't upset me if Oregon players said they think they would have won, I think I've actually seen stories where they did. That's fine with me. I don't really understand why this is a big deal, but I have theories.

One of the differences between the two situations is that everyone, even Williams, will acknowledge that she was wrong. She predicted a championship and fell shot. With South Carolina, their claiming of a championship that didn't happen, based on their logic, isn't capable of dispute. They simply claimed it, erroneously stating that it was "unanimous" and "undisputed,' and put up a banner. The first is a statement that is subject, and victim to, reality. The second, sadly, is not.

By the way, my comment is not jaded. South Carolina is a heckuva program. And they are going to be very good in the years to come. This constant harping on an imaginary championship in 2020 is beneath them.

South Carolina doesn't claim a championship.

Boston says she believes that they were about to win a championship, not that they did.

IDK that banner bigger than the FF banner and just as big as the National Championship banner

"HOW DARE YOU!! OHH HOW EVIL YOU ARE!! SO SICK AND TIRED OF YOU!!! DEMON SPAWN OF HELL BEGONE!!!!!!"

??
Disputes of fact and interpretation aside, I can't help but love any message that contains the phrase "demon spawn," and for that alone I give you a 10
:D
:)

I wish the best to all 64 NCAA tournament teams and their players, coaches and fans. (I can finally say this with a straight face now that Notre Dame isn't in the tournament )

Do you see the words "champion" or "championship" on that banner?
 May it is that #1 thing that is throwing me off. The NCAA didn't have a championship last year so I guess #1 reads better that putting an * on the banner. I also don't recall Oregon or Baylor hanging one of these banners. Let me perfectly blunt here: This banner was beneath what the SC Carolina WCBB program has accomplished. SOMEONE (ANYONE) should have talked Dawn out of this!

What Baylor is doing instead of hanging a banner for last year is dedicating this years tournament for the seniors last year and playing for them. If Baylor wins it all, they can actually hang a banner to honor the 4 seniors that didn’t get a chance to defend their title last year.

Neither Oregon nor Baylor was ranked number one at season end by either poll.

How is the banner "beneath what the SC WBB proram has accomplished?" We have only accomplished winning one national championship and we have never finished a regular season ranked number one. 2020 was the only year we have finished with one loss and wins over power programs like UConn, Baylor and Maryland. The truth is, it was our second best accomplishment in the program's history. We ain't UConn.

Oregon and Baylor weren't #1 in the final polls so I don't guess they would have.

Last season was unique and the banner is what South Carolina decided to do about it.

You guys are welcome to keep bringing it up, but no one is going to feel bad about it.

I don’t recall anyone on this board having issues when a freshman Christyn Williams declared the team was “coming for that national championship, guaranteed” at Geno’s golf fundraiser.
I honestly wasn’t following as closely as I am now, so can’t comment. But I do see your point.

And as long as the program keeps doing stunts like this banner, they never will be.

Nothing wrong with celebrating that and being ranked #1. That’s a big accomplishment everyone should be proud of. Just don’t like the “we were going to win the whole thing” narrative.

So, let's just say UConn got its season ended now because somebody tests positive for the virus and they have to bow out. Of all those players NONE of them are gonna say anything to the tune of "We thought we would have won the whole thing..." Yeah, right.

Honestly UConn fans, I kinda like the banner. The SCar faithful have pride in their college, they're proud in what they accomplished last year and they have a right in their building to put up any kind of banners that they want. It says nothing about championships nor does it claim SCar was last years champion or even last years best team. It doesn't bother me a whit. Heck, even if they don't make the FF this year and they want to put up a banner that says Final National Ranking #4 or 5 Unanimous 2020-21 it again wouldn't bother me one iota. To me anything that promotes WCBB anywhere is a good thing. We UConn fans have our own banners in our own buildings to celebrate. So can we most prideful UConn fans move on? Geez!

Fixed your post for you.

No one can hold a grudge or beat a dead horse like a UConn fan. I’ve been on the board for 26 years and this is the same old, same old stuff. Can’t we let it go?
Honestly Nan I really don't understand how UConn fans who can see more banners than any other BB college in history in their building can get triggered by a single banner in the building of someone else. I don't get it.

Thanks for fixing my post. However, if you read all of my posts you would also see that I wrote that I didn't have an issue with the Players Tribune article. Nor did I make any criticism of the players. Sorry, I haven't been on the Board for 26 years, so I can't take credit or blame for the "same old stuff."

Pretty sure a banner doesn't go up.
