Alec Millender commits to UConn

I don't think anyone is trashing him at all. For what we need as a 3rd string PG, he's a great pickup, but he isn't going to see much floor time unless we get riddled with injuries. He has some skills that make him a good player in low D1, but they are unlikely enough to make him a rotation player on an elite team unless he has another untapped level. If he can learn the offense, handle and protect the ball, and play serviceable defense, thats all we need from him as an emergency PG and a good practice player, but he's not here to score. Appreciating him for what he is is not trashing him.
Literally a practice body.

I don’t think Coach Hurley agreed w the scholarship extension. It’s hard to fill out a 15 man team. You have to find 3-4 kids that are willing to come in and be a practice bodies, take no money while their teammates make 6-7 figures. It ruins the dynamic.

Exactly my thoughts. Saying he won't play much isn't trashing him. He's coming to UConn to fill a role for exactly what Tom Moore said they were looking for.

Happy to have him at 43% but in the video I noticed that his 3 point shot starts at his waist, is that an issue to get shots off? Now if he is that open of course it’s great but this is the BE where a defender is basically going to be in his shorts. Great for practice and heaven forbid should we have injuries.

is that an issue to get shots off?

I'm going to cause drama with this agaib. Depends how fast it is. Where the shot starts isn't particularly important--go look at Ray Allen's shot. A high release and consistency is more important. I'd say keeping the ball close to the body is a close third.

He also doesn't have a very high release, but we'll ignore that.

AK, Mullins and now Millender are all great shooters with atypical shots. Kind of an interesting thing to have on a team.

Welcome aboard, looks like the type of guy who will run through a brick wall for Hurley. A culture guy who take full advantage of his opportunity, Let's go.

Could provide some Microwave offensive minutes off the bench. Gonna be a great practice player and locker room guy for the younger dudes.

2 thoughts:

1. I’m not going to remember half of players we have by the time the season starts.
2. We are going to be deeeeep again next year.
Deep again? The issue is we weren’t last year at PG mainly and that obviously won’t happen again. Full of guards never enough.

And for those that say he only did it in low Div1, sorry if you can shoot it you can shoot it he may find minutes for that alone. If Tarris stays out of foul trouble and dominates the inside making teams consider zoning us he may be a fit at that point. Of course we know Ball and Mullins will probably kill that idea as well as Furphy but you never know.

I’m sure it’s a great opportunity for the young man just to join this team and enjoy his last year of eligibility. I respect him for being a Husky without any guarantee of PT and Koroma as well, although I think he will find a few for sure.

Well last year he did see Mahaney as a PG and Nowell as decent back-up. I think Hurley just missed on what the guys could do and it became worst when Diarra go hurt. I do think he has upped the level of PG this year with both Demary and Smith but he thought he would have more last year than he actually had. So it wasn't due to numbers but maybe true PG quality.

Agree about OG quality but Nowell a decent point guard? Maybe he will be someday but not last year. Decent implies a guard who can come in and defend, distribute and score for the time he’s given. Was that Nowell?

Pretty much what I was implying. Injuries happen as do being wrong about changing positional players. Plenty of options just in case now.

Still no third center

Maybe he’s on campus now? From Samford U…..

It is nice having 2 extra scholarships this year and it looks like we will go the full 15. We stopped at 12 last year which was 1 short. Did the season before so I get your point but i do wonder if these back of the bench guys will have much impact besides being good practice players.

Well I didn’t specify a previous time period that our team was “deep”. Just stating that we will be deep again- agree that we weren’t as deep as we thought we would be last year.

Hey, not a single one of us knew what we were getting when Tristen Newton transferred here.

Looking optimistically forward
He was a top transfer and must have for Hurley that year. He had a big game against UConn when he played against us. I think some of us knew what we were getting. Maybe not at the level he achieved but we knew he could score. You can't even equate Newton a top transfer to some low level Transfer. BY is bizarre world sometimes with their comparisons.

This is retconning. I can't remember anyone saying "great get" real time. OTOH, I remember folks saying Hurley "whiffed in the portal" early that season.

No, it's not. I only read the first page of the thread when he visited and that's already false. A portion of the board turned on him early in the season, but people were very excited for him when he visited/committed

I think the "whiffed on a point guard" stuff came in January and didn't stick around very long.

I went through the first few pages and not one poster spelled his name Tristan. I don't know how you did it but that thread was obviously faked.......

You are clearly wrong based on comments and links people have posted and there is no way you can compare Tristen to Alec like one poster did.
