I likely missed the discussion as I'm not a regular follower, but not much came up in search of the forum. What happened with UConn and AJ Dybantsa the #1 prospect this year? Initially it was thought that UConn was possibly the team to beat (from New England, positional fit, talked positively about UConn in general), but recently it appears they are not even in touch with him. What happened?

It seems that he (or his handlers) wants to be the first 10 million dollar NIL player. That it not they type of recruiting this program gets involved with.

This one sailed a long time ago. UConn never pursued. Not a fit on multiple levels.
He will make me tune into the occasional BYU game next year when I would otherwise not, so that I’m happy about.
AJ sends vibes that he doesn’t care about winning in his one year at the college level, at all. Part of me feels guys like him should just do the Ron Holland and not even bother as it cheapens the sport, but another part of me will be entertained by the NIL$ to effort ratio watch.

AJ Dybansta is going to the highest bidder and that won't be UConn. Hurley and the coaching staff do not get involved in humongous bidding wars.

Moronic. I get that he's a poor kid from Brockton but he's got enough talent to be a lottery pick. Prioritizing cash now vs development is short sighted. Getting bad advice, and I don't think it reflects well on him. Glad UConn is out.

is playing for schmeyer at duke any different at this point? he's a dunce so youre only going in order to join the "duke brotherhood" ie for marketing/exposure not development. i'd rather play for the BYU coach.

Hard to know. He's been a college coach for what, 2-3 games now? He will be fine wherever he goes, like Flagg. My guess is he's going to be a high usage player and is going to insist on getting minutes and shots. I don't see him sacrificing for a team based on the approach he's taken to recruiting.

He’ll be fine just like Egor Demin.
I also read somewhere he would even not even meet with coaches or visit programs unless until they were on his final list and making the final list required guarantees of big NIL and that he would be a one and done. The whole process was counter to the culture that Hurley has built. Maintaining a positive culture requires a program, organization, company etc to pass on people no matter how talented they are if they are a bad fit for culture.

I don't think AJ is a bad kid. His father is running his recruitment and is looking to retire on his son. That's the system today and he's taking advantage of it. His father is doing what he thinks is right and AJ is letting his father run things. It is what it is.

Unlikely, but if he goes any lower than #1 in the 2026 draft for whatever reason due to his college decision (lack of exposure, poor coaching, poor performance, etc.) that’s possibly a $3M+ mistake. Better get more than that in NIL to cover it.

He’s definitely not a bad kid. Is he a bit of a hot dog and clearly focused on the draft? Yes, doesn’t mean he’s a bad kid. Maybe lacking of a little humility.
It would be funny if a kid like Cam Boozer jumped him in the draft, as it certainly feels like the entourage sees an automatic first pick. Meanwhile Cam is a really talented kid, hoops purist and grinder of a hard worker, with what seems lots of humility. Not sure that’s enough to skip over the physical traits of AJ, but would be interested if NBA franchises value.
