Ahmad Nowell article is laughable

Athlon Sports is a weird platform, last year they had a "writer" write some fake expose on the University of Colorado football, claiming that they had a rampant gun problem within the team, and when the writer was pressed to provide evidence he pointed to a vlog in which the defensive backs were asked who had the best "straps", i.e. best coverage skills. The writer interpreted "straps" as slang for guns(strapped) when anyone who follows football knows straps used in that context means coverage skills.

Does Nowell qualify for a redshirt? The shoulder injury is out in the open now so maybe he should/ should’ve. I don’t know the amount of minutes / games needed to qualify.

Nope. Can only play in 8 or 10 games, total, to get a medical redshirt. He played in 18 games.

Well, to answer, questions abound about how they will fill the void left by Nowell,, his name is Malachi Smith. Wish Mr. Nowell a long and successful college career.

Saw it. Opened it. Didn't ultimately read it though.

I saw an article last night...could have been this morning...that began with something to the effect of, "After a down year..."

Someone remind me what Florida and Duke did the season after their B2Bs...Just kidding. no one has to. Florida didn't make the Tournament and Duke lost in the 2nd Round (Sound familiar?). Were those down years for them or where they reloading?

In addition, UConn replaced five rotation players (Hawkins, Jackson, Sanogo, Calcaterra, Alleyne) from the first Championship season and four starters (Newton, Spencer, Castle, and Clingan, all played minutes in the NBA.) this past season. Some people were expecting a 3-peat.

Florida returned their entire starting lineup from their first championship. Duke return four starters, not counting Brian Davis (started 11 and 34 games in '91 and '92, respectively) or Antonio Lang (8 and 18, respectively).

Back in the day, Athlon season previews were a good read. Too bad the name lives on in infamy.

As the Huskies prepare for the future, questions abound about how they will fill the void left by Nowell, who joins fellow recruit Isaiah Abraham in leaving the program.

That's pretty funny.

The author is Canadian. Must be a Syracuse fan.
honestly, canadian, genius, axe to grind, hates UConn and crappy member of the media.... Probably is a syracuse grad

The article appears to have been written by a huge Nowell fan. And not written well.

And where were there "flashes of brilliance?"
They were "flashes" so you had to film in slow motion mode so on playback you'd see them.
What an amateur writer. Either doesn't like UConn or as someone else said, may be a fan of Nowell.
No matter, I hope AN has made a move to a team that will allow him to grow and develop.

no more than 40% of games, none in second half of season, used to be the rule, might be updated, not sure

Especially laughable when we have Braylon Mullins coming in, on top of two highly sought after transfer guards

That is absolutely embarrassing.

Yeah, I think "flashes of good play" is about as much as you could say.

Absolutely nothing against Ahmad Nowell. But I’m pretty happy where we ended up.
Definitely. I mean, if he stayed, you're obviously hoping for a big jump in year 2 and that he stays healthy. But there wasn't much from last year to give you much hope, honestly. He averaged less than 6 minutes per game in the 18 games he did play in and was ultimately a complete non-factor. 19 of his total 27 points on the season came in the 5 games against absolute garbage opponents in November.

How much did Tasheed pay to have that article written lmao

I keep seeing how "bad" he was, but I'm not on X/Twitter. Was it really that bad, or just enthusiastic?

Expertise: WNBA, NBA, NFL, NCAA

I’m constantly reminded that journalists can at times not know sh about the subject which they’re writing. Good friend of mine worked for Golf Digest for 10 years and wrote about nothing but golf obviously, but decided he wanted a change. Ended up working for a newspaper where he wrote about golf…..investments… in the business section of the paper. Never took any business courses, never had any interest in it, never had any money to invest bc he was also a gambler. But he wanted out of Golf Digest. Long story short, he ended up getting laid off in a year because I think people caught onto his lack of expertise on anything investment related. But he is a constant reminder that anyone can write anything about anything, even in fairly reputable publications, and not know a thing about it other than what ‘the Google’ has to say.

Not here to rag on Nowell because I was a fan of his throughout the season, but this is a funny article

"As a four‑star prospect and a top-40 national recruit, many assumed he would quickly blossom into a cornerstone of the Huskies' backcourt."
  • With Diarra returning and Mahaney transferring, I'm not sure how many people he'd "quickly" blossom. This was always going to be a multi year thing, forced to expedite after Mahaney didn't work out
"While there were flashes of brilliance in his lone freshman year at UConn, the overall picture was one of unfulfilled potential."
  • Flashes of "brilliance" is not true, but you'll find a lot of posts from me (especially early season) praising Nowell. There were flashes of potential, but brilliance is......generous lol
"With more consistent playing time ahead and a fresh environment, Nowell’s transfer serves as a win for VCU and a wake-up call for UConn."
  • What is the wake up call?
"As the Huskies prepare for the future, questions abound about how they will fill the void left by Nowell"
  • The void was filled 10x over when Silas Demary committed almost 2 weeks before the article was written, and filled even more a few days ago with Malachi Smith. Exaggerating for puff pieces is one thing and everyone does it, but this quote makes it very clear this writer knows absolutely nothing about what he is writing about lol
