And yet, he won ROTY and Clingan wasn’t particularly close.

The flaw with your repeated reliance on Per/40 or Per/36 is DC has been known to gas in bigger minutes. Okafor was a gazelle who didn’t, stats take a hit when you don’t have the wind to play 25+ minutes often.

The reason Clingan didn't play big minutes early on was that he had to share minutes with Ayton and Williams. The Bobcats were horrendous and Okafor had nobody to share minutes with.

This would be Clingan's senior year at UConn. So the comparison about ROY in the NBA isn't really fair.

My original point was just how impressive it was that Okafor won ROTY over Dwight, an All-Time Center. Also, Emeka’s rookie year would have been his Senior year, if we are gonna be picky.
 
I am surprised at the lack of love for Tristen Newton among fans. Bob Cousy award winner, first team all American, 2 time national champ ( both years he was a Husky), MVP of the final 4. I say next number retired should be his #2.

If I read as who would you want to add to this year's 14 man roster and see DC as 2024-25, or Ray Allen as 1995-96 then we really cannot go wrong with any pick.

You could argue a given player from the list would start over a current starter but it's why this player not 'and who would they replace as a starter'.

No denying last season we could have used a better defensive player but this is for this season where we expect better O and better D as a whole.

You could get Uncle Cliffy in his prime would be great, so would the Dove, the Wrench, hell gimme Depriest and he would be great.

Correct, Emeka's rookie year would've been his senior year had he stayed at UConn. Clingan's rookie year would've been his junior year had he stayed at UConn. It's why I compared their stats for their freshman and sophomore seasons. Clingan would be a senior this upcoming season, I'm taking Clingan as a senior if I could add one former player to this roster.

Why does that matter? He went into the draft when he did. It’s a 20 year difference, there’s lots of variables. I thought we were choosing a UConn player based on how they were at UConn, no?

Doesn't change my answer. On paper Okafor had a better junior season than Clingan's sophomore season as did Kemba as a junior, Donyell as a junior, and Ray as a junior but for this coaching staff and how they do things there is no better pick than Clingan. When healthy and in playing shape we ran offense out of him at the top of the key, he set monster screens, lob threat and the most dominant defense I've ever seen at UConn. We're looking at a four-peat if Clingan was here for his senior season.

We played a much different brand of basketball when Calhoun was the coach.

Recency bias? Why would we pick a PG when our PG’s are solid? Why pick a SG when we have two options who shoot north of 40% from 3 and one of them can play the small forward slot? I am old enough to remember D. Marshall and Butler. I loved those guys. I would not trade Alex for them. Sorry, but Alex has two rings. The only former player that guarantees us a ring, considering the team construction and all, is Clingan. Emeka is a gangster and he does have a ring. But Clingan has two! And Clingan was far more imposing and disruptive on a basketball game than any other UConn center, including Emeka.

See, the rings don’t really matter here. It’s add a player to the team that will help get THI TEAM a ring.

Not taking Donyell or Caron over AK is ridiculous. I understand we all have a lot of tied up love in the current guys who have brought us back to the promised land…But that’s crazy to me

Of course national championships matter here. Adding the guy who just won two national championships in his only two seasons, who would have made the Huskies the runaway favorite to three-peat, and the runaway favorite to four-peat makes way more sense than adding a player who played over 20 years ago for a different coaching staff with a different philosophy on how to play the game.

He averaged 22 mpg in his first tourney and was a PART of one of the best cbb teams in cbb history. Tristen Newton is just as much, if not more of a reason we won b2b (guards win championships, as we can attest to).

I'm not disparaging Clingan whatsoever. He's not a wrong answer to the OP's question. I think I'm just still shocked people were so heavy Clingan over Okafor. Maybe a little recency bias.

Every other position is well stocked in the depth chart so eliminate those options. We don't need a point guard, shooting guard, power forward, or small forward. We have plenty of depth there.

Now who would I pick as a third center along with Tarris Reed Jr and Eric Reibe?

Clingan? No, because its now Reed and Reibes era and Clingan is too good he'd take their minutes and they'd essentially become backup centers. Tarris' is also very good and its his senior year and he is playing for a high lottery spot in the NBA draft. Reibe is a freshman so he may be ok with a backup role at either center or even power forward.

We need a third string center. Hasheem Thabeet (as a junior from the 2008/2009 season) could play valuable minutes behind Reid tak8ng pressure off Reibe. Reid can be either third string center or backup center or backup power forward.

I don't fully understand your logic. Hasheem was co-BE POY, National Defensive POY, and 2nd team All-America. You're suggesting he'd be our third string center?
