Well, I hope she got competent medical care on the trip. And I hope Mom or UConn get her right to a doctor when she gets home. Tonsillitis can lead to more serious stuff (strep, rheumatic fever) and I have also heard of mono being misdiagnosed as tonsillitis. Don't want be an alarmist, but please get her right to the best medical care available.

UConn would have nothing to do with her getting any medical treatment. She's in High School just going into her senior year.

Well she DID win the world championship - I'll give her that, as long as KLS didn't sustain any long-term damage from overuse

The USA won despite the lack of coaching by Phillips!

see? Just say what you need to say and walk away. There is nothing more you can do, even if you are in the right. Someone always sees it another way (even if it is the wrong way  )

o c'mon TJI - you are being totally unreasonable and not giving this an awful lot of thought! surely you understand that arm chair coaches have a fuller understanding of the situation than say, someone directly in the mix, and know precisely how things should be done as opposed to these coaches selected for their experience. seriously I think you're making vast assumptions and drawing erroneous conclusions simply based upon what you're seeing on the TV screen... o wait.... :p
Daayuum. That stuff is just dripping today. :)

We talk about her so much I forget we still have a year to wait. Thanks for the correction.

So Mom! Get her to a doctor!

Well you do bring up an interesting question that I certainly don't know the answer to. What does USA Basketball provide for in terms of medical coverage for their national teams, especially teams like this that are going on extended trips overseas? Do they bring a doctor? Do they have a medical support plan in place using local medical services? Does it matter what the destination country and the percieved quality of the local medical services are? I wonder now what their standard practice is.

That very well may be - at least it can be argued. What can't be argued is her team won the world championship. Objectively, that was the result she got, in black & white. How much better result could she have gotten?

Yes they won, but the game shouldn't have been that close. Why did she allow Spain's best player to score 38 points? Phillips should have had someone guarding that player closely all game.

Clearly coach was incompetent. I mean, she had a bunch of all stars from all over the place for how many days of practice? And then they had to travel? And then they had to play international teams they'd never seen? In back to back games? I mean, honestly, just how long does take a group of relative strangers to learn the systems of a new coach?

Yes! Like that other incompetent coach that threw a player coming back from mono right out there for almost 40 minutes per game! Oh wait...

I don't remember Kaleena losing 15 pounds, do you? That would make you very weak. Also, we're talking about an adult, in the US not some foreign country and you know KML was monitored very closely the entire time.

I imagine the USA team has a doctor/physio/trainer with them.

Ask Geno about that! I think the championship game was a lot closer than it could and should have been. I think it could almost have gone either way in the last minute or two. A game that the USA team was obviously far more talented in could have been lost by poor coaching decisions. How irate would Geno have been??? The Spain team was good enough to make it a very competitive game IF the USA coach employed horrific defensive strategies and didn't adjust as the game played on. The Spain team was good enough to make it a very competitive game IF the USA coach had burnt out at least one of her stars (KLS) by playing her EXCESSIVE minutes in previous games (blowouts) despite her being obviously under the weather throughout the tournament. I think you have to give credit (or blame) where it is due and when you have a stacked team and still have to squeak out a victory narrowly in the closing minutes that suggests you reevaluate what the heck happened. There was absolutely no reason for the final game to be decided in the last minute despite an outstanding performance by that Spanish star. Her performance was enhanced by the extraordinarily poor defensive scheme of the US coaching staff and the unwillingness to change things when she made uncontested shot after shot.

WELL SAID!! I watched the game and thought those exact things...it's like they were hoping to win by sheer number of good players instead of working and wanting it more.

I watched the game and thought the same thing. And it worked.
