Samuelson had already missed Team USA’s tune-up tournament in France due to tonsillitis, which hit her on the trip to Europe from Colorado Springs. She lost 10 pounds and was in bed for four days with a fever and was unable to eat.

“I was shocked when I finally got to see her in the Czech Republic,” Samuelson’s mother, Karen, said in an e-mail Wednesday. “But she just wanted to get back on the court and help her team and do whatever Coach (Sue Phillips) needed her to do.”

This is what I wrote Sunday before the final...what was Coach Phillips thinking..??

"If I'm not mistaken, KLS was sick enough to miss the first 2 or 3 games of the U-17 tour in Europe. Fortunately, they were tune-up games just before the official tournament began. She has played in all 6 games since then and leads the team in minutes played w/ 150 or 25.0 minutes per game. The next 2 players have 120 and 126 minutes. Not only is she leading the team in scoring w/ 90 points or 15.0 per game, but she is playing point and often bringing the ball up court. KLS has 18 of the team's 38 three point baskets. She is getting a lot of work...maybe too much?

Yesterday, against Hungary, KLS played 19:01 of the 20 minute first half. She played 33 of the first 36 competitive minutes before mass substitutions. She looked dead a-- tired and like she needed more rest. KLS shot 6 for 8 to open the game, and 3-8 after that. Her third personal foul just before the 1st half ended was the result of a tired player reaching in rather than moving her feet.

USA has played 6 games in the last 8 days. Even if she was 100% healthy, Coach Phillips is not giving her enough rest. It would be nice to have her rested before the most important game of the tournament. Just my opinion..."

Example - The 3rd game of the tournament was against Mali. USA won by 56 points. KLS played 25 minutes, the most of anyone in that game. WHY??

Sort of answers the questions about stamina I would say. Makes her performance a bit easier to appreciate.

one would hope. Some folks' expectations are just a wee bit too high, and their affect a wee bit too unforgiving.....at times....and just some folks......

From what I heard it was closer to 15 lbs than 10 lbs that Lou lost.
Maybe the info I got included her bag?

When Katie Lou Samuelson’s travel bag was lost on the United States national team’s journey from France to the Czech Republic for the FIBA U-17 world championships, she had to wonder what could go wrong next.

Be it resolved that Katie Lou is a warrior and Coach Phillips is a blockhead.
You got it. The girl has grit for sure, but sometimes the coach should protect the kids from themselves. Of course she wants to contribute, but it should be measured. Now I have to try and turn off this dopey underlining.

Well she DID win the world championship - I'll give her that, as long as KLS didn't sustain any long-term damage from overuse

The GIRLS won the championship and to an extent, it may have been despite Coach Phillips. Beyond the fact that KLS was probably used too often by her, there were other issues including the type defense (or lack of) that the USA displayed when they allowed the Spanish star to seemingly shoot shot after shot virtually uncontested. She almost singlehandedly won the game for Spain when it was pretty apparent the US team was the better team. I don't want to beat anyone down but hearing how badly KLS was due to her illness, why was she used with the frequency that she was in games that were decided early. I think that's a fair criticism.

Definitely fair. But they did win it all, so a case could also be made that whatever she did "worked"

Ok I will be devils advocate, well kinda. As a coach you will always do things differently the second time around! A good coach learns from their mistakes and hindsight is easy.

USA goes to the World Championships having lost to France without KLS. This was unexpected and probably showed several weaknesses in this team in my opinion. KLS is a warrior she will do whatever IT takes. She does not shy away from anything.

Now all the other teams think they have a shot at USA and USA has to play two of those teams that have seen them in France, in their pool.

First order of business is to get through the pool in good position. If you watch the Mali, Mexico games that was time for rest and she got some. But this is a long tournament. Even in the Hungary game KLS was needed as they were staying with the US. You have to win that game to get into the final. This team certainly wasn't deep as some first thought and could have used those 2 quick guards from last year but that was decided at try outs.

Clearly coach was incompetent. I mean, she had a bunch of all stars from all over the place for how many days of practice? And then they had to travel? And then they had to play international teams they'd never seen? In back to back games? I mean, honestly, just how long does take a group of relative strangers to learn the systems of a new coach?

Coach Phillips had KLS, Cox, De'Janae, Durr, Arike and several others last year for the U-16 tournament in Mexico. Her "system" is not new to many of these players. KLS averaged 27.2 minutes per game despite USA outscoring opponents 463-144 in just 5 games. Let me repeat, they scored 319 more points in 5 games..!! And she still played KLS 27.2 minutes per game.

This year she did the same thing, but going into the tournament KLS was so sick she had lost 10 pounds and her mother was "shocked" when she saw her in the Czech Republic. That is not smart coaching. KLS was a warrior, but her illness and fatigue showed in the last two games. Just my opinion....

And on top of that she won the WC. If that doesn't prove incompetence I don't know what does.

To all the critics of Katie Lou's performance, you have your answer. Someone posted under an article about the finals how could Katie Lou be the number one ranked player in her class? To you I reply the fact that she was extremely ill, underweight, no strength and still led the US team in minutes says all you need to know about Katie. We're proud of the USA team and Katie's performance. I know we can't wait for her to arrive in Storrs.

o c'mon TJI - you are being totally unreasonable and not giving this an awful lot of thought! surely you understand that arm chair coaches have a fuller understanding of the situation than say, someone directly in the mix, and know precisely how things should be done as opposed to these coaches selected for their experience.

seriously I think you're making vast assumptions and drawing erroneous conclusions simply based upon what you're seeing on the TV screen...

o wait....

:p
