I don't see a link anywhere for this but a quick summary from Carl's JI article:

Geno was at a Crystal game last year and when subbed out, she walked to the bench.
Our #1 grouch told her she needed to be a leader and should always run to the bench...setting an example.
Crystal seemed to embrace that.

Geno had an interesting player comparison. Not Crystal to MoJeff but Crystal to Ivory Latta.
A few years ago I remember Ivory and North Carolina torching UConn in Hartford...a rout.
Should Crystal be her own version of Latta, I would sign for that today.

That story on the running to the bench was a reprise of the same story published a while back - and I think it was linked either in Nan's daily news listing or in another thread - maybe the pinned one on recruits.
The Ivory Latta comparison was new, and a version of Latta with Uconn discipline would indeed be special!

Thanks for the video! My guess is that MoJeff took 3 pull-up jumpers...total....in her first 2 years.
A couple more in her junior year....and this year it is a real weapon. Crystal seem to already have it in her bag of tricks bigtime...love it.

Highlight reels need to be taken for what their worth, but wow, quick release, great form and no conscience. Get that with disciplined play, and she could be special.

Thanks for the video link. 4 things I LOVED about that video of her...
  1. She has excellent court vision and is a pinpoint passer. Some players would drive to the basket thru the trees, and try to bulldoze or force their own shot. She's clearly capable of doing that on a drive, but also, to quote Doris, she's a willing passer. Drive to the basket, draw 2 or 3 defenders, and dish to a wide open teammate for a layup. And in those passes to post players, it's not like they had to reach for the pass - it was right to their sweet spot for the easy layup.
  2. She has mad ball handling skills and moves so quick with the ball that other players are left standing looking at her like "what...?" Also, she doesn't push the ball, or even carry it much. She's so fast that traditional dribbling close to her body allows her to move faster than everyone and still be in total control.
  3. She displayed a deft touch on the mid range pull up jumper - I think she took more in that short video than Moriah did in her 1st 3 seasons combined (as noted above by Blake above)
  4. She shoots the 3 from DEEP and with no hesitation. Now I realize this is a highlight reel and it's hard to know how many she missed, but she has a lightning quick release and hopefully a strong % from beyond the arc.
Again I realize it's a highlight reel. I know she has a great deal of work to do and I would expect her first season to be much like Moriah's - show some flashes, but possibly the speed of the college game may force her to go "too" fast (like Moriah did her first year - Geno was quoted as saying they told Moriah she needed to slow down to help the game come easier to her, but that made her go even faster...). I think she's going to be special.

I think we will be deep in our guard rotation next year. Not experienced but deep. Kia and Saniya will be terrific (will they both start? Probably IMHO - I could see starters of Saniya, Kia, KLS, Morgan and Natalie, but you also could replace KLS with Napheesa or Gabby depending on who Geno wants to use as a starter. Bench of Dangerfield, Bent, Irwin, Williams, Collier and Ekmark.

No disrespect to the rest of the team, but that is as weak a bench as UCONN has had in a very long time. I think in big games Geno could go with as little as 7 depending on how fast Crystle catches on but I'd expect Gabby and the other bench player (Collier or KLS) to get lots of PT as well. If Courtney continues to work on her game and actually gets her 3 point shot back, I could see her earning some time at the 2G spot, but she needs to up the quickness and lateral movement on defense. I have very low expectations for Bent and Irwin as freshmen but perhaps they will surprise me!! I sure hope so!

Before we relegate Lou to the bench next year (or as a sub option), let's reflect a bit on Geno's comment on the last "GA Show." He said, with a sparkle in his eye, that maybe Lou and Collier would be the next Stewart and Tuck. This gives an insight into Coach's expectations for the two guys coming in together this year (as Bre and Morgan came in together 4 years ago). Geno, as well as many of us, expects Lou to become the superstar she was in HS. In the immediate absence of another big talent recruit, Coach is banking on having the same payoff with this year's crop as he had in 2012-2013. As for Crystal's video being more or less useful, it's clear the young lady is a great player. We all know who she's expected to replace. So next year might look like: Crystal, Kia, Lou, Napheesa, and Tuck. Keep in mind that however efficient and useful Nat turns out to be, she will not necessarily function well in an up-tempo game. If Morgan leaves, and Collier settles into the 3, then Butler may start.

And you a highly successful novelist! You should be setting an example for the rest of us! For shame, sir!;)

Highlites:

Nice highlight reel. I hope she can make that high school to college transition quickly, and reprise the success here at the college level that she's having in high school.

How nice would that be if her play would constantly remind us of Moriah Jefferson. A player that did make that adjustment very quickly is Mariya Moore of Louisville.

She was the star on her Northern California high school team, and led them to the state finals. She quickly made the transition form high school to college, and became a starter as a freshman for the Cardinals. She quickly became one of their better players.

This year she's the team's 3rd leading scorer at 13.6 ppg. She may become their leading scorer by season's end (she takes a lot of shots). It can be done.

Geno may find it difficult to leave her on the bench for long periods of time. She has skills and quickness that no one else on the current roster (save Mo) has. Watching her is going to be a whole lot of fun.

Here's the link to a very similar story from Carl on the SNY website.

Here is an article from ESPN about Crystal a while back. Am sure it has been posted here before, maybe not.

Ahh - the famous "Regular Kids" article..

Quote from Kentucky Premier coach David Tapley: "But that's why she's going to UConn. They are not taking regular kids."

Kalana Greene sort of started or encouraged others to run back to the bench with energy...

Crystal reminds me of a shorter Jewell Loyd--with more arc on her shot.
