You need to be a subscriber to read the article in Friday's JI.

I'll try to summarize a bit:
All from her Dad: staff was 'spectactular' in their presentation of program and history of UConn.
The visit went 'great'....they learned a lot. They met with Warde Manuel and academic folks.

They sat in for a 3 hour practice and 'we were not bored for one second'. They learned something every second. They chatted about the 1970's Knicks and Geno's office was 'like the Louvre' with all the stuff in there regarding the history.

Roscoe Wilson played 10 years as a pro in Europe. Frankly...he could not have sounded more enthusiastic. A'ja will have great choices for sure....but only one is the best.

Hope she enjoys her high school season.

BLAKE: nice summary of what must have been a fantastic visit/experience for this family. (Actually, Yarders could find entire article in Nan's daily list of blogs, under the Ademic heading: I think it is another good one by Carl and well worth reading.)

The comments struck me as familiar.

Turns out Carl also published them in his SNY blog.

Not to associate you in any way, Blake, but the recent thread on HuskyNan adding a term to the English language brought to mind our creation of the verb "shan," which old Boneyard hands will remember well and still occasionally use.

To "shan" is to present old news as though it were new, as in, "There you go, Blake, shanning again."

Not to associate you in any way, Blake. Example of usage for illustrative purposes only.

Since we also have a thread entitled Confessions of an Arrogant UConn Fan -- authentically written, appropriately enough, by an arrogant UConn fan -- in retrospect I must say we were a little mean to Shandon, who was only trying to make helpful contributions.

He just didn't know what his lasting contribution would be. The deficiencies in his efforts (repeated often enough to cry out for a new word) were simply not readily perceptible to him, due to his lack of even rudimentary . . . well, there I go again, being mean.

My confessions have now had their two seconds in the sun. A moment's reflection on the things Shan used to (and still does for all I know) turn around and say about Geno and UConn on his Homeboard of Ill Repute banish any guilt like a wisp of fog on a fresh morning breeze.

JS: guilty as charged....my bad. I checked Carl's SNY blog before I typed this but neglected to scroll down so I missed his inclusion of the entire JI piece.

Great stuff to read, Blake. Thanks for sharing. There is no coach out there with the pedigree of UCONN. It's becoming clear to me that if the choice were ONLY about basketball, UCONN would be in the driver's seat.

I thought a Shan was a person from a certain part of Southeast Asia. Rumor has it, they are prone to epileptic seizures, which leads to the proverbial question: "Where were you when the fit hit the Shan?" :)

JS,,,

Whatever became of Shan? I seem to have forgotten how he came to end his wonderfully redundant & seriously silly postings. Does anyone remember what became of him? Did he just leave the posting world or did he continue to post under a new handle? I must be getting old.

I do remember Oovy(sp) and son of Oovy. Ah, the mystery of who was leaking all that insider info... I also remember how disappointed I was to learn of Oovy's true identity...

I think it was really big of you, JS, not to associate Blake in any way! Incidentally, speaking of absent friends, there were, among others, the never-to-be-forgotten Newbie, Stop-n-pop (who also posted under another handle, I seem to recall) , Lady Leprechaun, and the most memorable of all, the unquenchable Maria hater, bb*****.

Ohhhh, newbie... he had one of the most memorable first days posting on the BY that I can remember... what a debacle... he followed that up with splitting the atom on the espn blue board... I actually felt sorry for the guy in those first days of his posting career... by the time he moderated the den I had come to my senses.

JS,,,

Whatever became of Shan?
As I recall, he simply retired from the Boneyard, much like a knight who finds that his armor doesn't stop a damned thing. I picture him slumped under a tree dressing his myriad wounds before returning to his village, where he fit right in to an extent that no one could distinguish him enough from anyone else to call him the village id. . . well, never mind, it's not nice.

He indeed continued to post in that locale, indulging his three talents. The first, as mentioned, was to present old links as new news. Sort of like Pap caught in a time warp. The second was to post baseless slander about Geno. Sort of like . . . well, many of those idling in that village square. And the third was collecting fingernail scrapings in a jar.

Blasts from the past. Among the others mentioned so far in this thoroughly hijacked thread:

  • Stop N Pop. Also posted under another handle? Yeesh. He also posted under another 20 or so, and was banned under all of them. One of the more memorable, which lasted a matter of minutes, was Toe, Knees & Ass. (You must understand SNP, under whatever handle, had an aversion to those he viewed as overly positive posters.)
  • Lady Leprechaun. I affectionately referred to her as Lady Leper. Heard a shocking rumor that she was Muffett. Hard to believe, given the talent for vitriol displayed by the little green wench, but you never know what lurks within . . .
  • Oovy/Son of. Used to have memorable battles with another of the old board villains, Alittlewylde. Did a nice riff on the wicked witch melting when the latter got banned, but eventually met the same fate. Took up residence on the orange board, where he called out another Boneyarder in terms that endeared him to me forever ("JS can be sarcastic, but at least he's smart . You, xxxxx, are stupid.)" Sorry to throw you under the bus, xxxxx -- you know who you are -- but I"ll take what I can get out of context.)
Hard to comment on two others. Newbie was a problem. Hard to respond to him as he deserved, given his family connection to Brittany Hunter. The crow was eventually force-fed to Newbie, who one imagined was still burping from it when he came out on the floor on Senior Night.

Bball xxxxx was also a problem. A polite player-trasher who did the trashing not by any one post that violated the BY rules as they then existed, but cumulatively, by weight of repetition. When the scope of Bball's permissible topics was narrowed just slightly (by placing one player -- Maria -- off limits), the poster chose to leave. Which probably suited from both points of view, as Bball's central premise -- that Maria would never play significant minutes in an important game -- was already starting to go down in ignominious flames.

Ah, memories. Reminds me of many happy hours spent in the Star Wars cocktail lounge.

Great job, JS. There is a good chance I was that poster Oovy was referring to. We did have our battles.

Those were the days. Many Uconn fans posted on The Summitt in those days. Icebear was as prolific there as he is here. And Phil made them crazy with his logical posts that he delivered like the gentleman he is.

Have you forgotten Bart? Wasn't he the guy who at least annually reminded us how incompetent that Geno is/was as a recruiter?

I'm sure he is hiding under some rock and cursing about some blue-chipper that Geno "lost."

Careful, he's still active.

Bart used to be a bit jittery about the future, that's all. Haven't noticed it in his less frequent recent postings.

His tendency, back in the day, to despair did earn him a certain reputation.

I believe that Oovy was the one who spilled the beans on DT wearing a back brace during games. I believe he quit the Summitt after he realized the info he gave was as if he had looked into Dt's medical files. Fans started questioning about the info and he realized he had indeed got himself into a pile of dogpoop. I think he quit posting not too long after. Still don't know how he came up with that info. I recall she had a problem with her back which forced her to be a pg where she passed the ball much more than she shot.

How Newbie was able to face Geno after all he posted and Geno facing him and shaking his hand at senior night, just showed what kind of a person he was. Besides Geno was very fond of Brittany.

Now that's funny... this is exactly the image that popped into my mind when I read Kib's post...

I liked Bart but I admit he was a bit twitchy and he did suffer from a delightful form of spontaneous combustion when one of our girls missed a free throw...

He was a medical doctor with connections to the team but no official role.

Wasn't just "as if" he'd looked into the files. He actually claimed to have seen the x-rays.

If he got the info from official sources, and not by stealth, bluff or DT's cooperation (possible), it would practically scream HIPPA violation on somebody else's part as well as his.

You're right that he shut up after people began to raise red flags on this score.

It was a different world back then. The Summit allowed a level of debate, ugly as it got at times. Thy opponents board on both sites brought out the dark side of many a good Uconn fan. But it was good therapy.

Now we get a poor mans troll in ciarlante and the Tennessee rain man, Stwainfan.

It's better, but certainly more boring.
