There is no one at the Detroit Bowl.

North Carolina fans didn't go. Rutgers fans didn't go.

Why not?

It probably makes those Ford Field people miss the good old days when people attended their bowl....

UConn's strong showing is likely to make the Huskies an appealing choice for other bowls. The university's history of traveling well for basketball events, like the men's and women's Final Fours, appears to have extended to football.

"What they did will speak volumes to the bowl community," said Ken Hoffman, the executive director of the Motor City Bowl. "They did a tremendous job."

RU block FG 2nd qtr.Fish I don't think many can or care to go to Motown the day after Xmas esp since this minor bowl isn't appealing after bowling 9 of 10 years for RU to either team!?! Not a desirable bowl location for either team.

What does this have to do with the original post?
the score of the poorly attended bowl. Since that was all that was missing. Why waste time asking? Typical bad minor bowl not really worthy of extending this thread IMO.

This used to be a well attended bowl, except for the last 2 years. They really should have kept the matchup of MAC vs Big 10 as the MAC team usually had a very good season and were located relatively close to Detroit and so are most of the Big 10 schools. Bringing the ACC into this bowl, and a mediocre at best ACC school, was a mistake.

This is just a foreshadowing of the loss of interest in college football that will follow a P5 split and the loss of local rivalries. Mediocre P5-P5 matchups will be so common they'll be beyond boring.

You don't have to go to bowl games after you get in to a P5 conference. It's only important in your school's pre-P5 years to go to bowl games.

This bowl should be given back to The MAC. Their teams are closer by, and might actually want to play in it. TV has destroyed the concept of bowl games as rewards for great seasons and as destinations for fans. There are twice as many as there should be, and way too many located in God Awful places like Detroit or Boise.

Couldn't agree more with regards to your two last sentences.

Detroit... the day after Christmas. Rutgers would have more fans if they played in the Military or Pinstripe bowls. UNC fans only show up for basketball games.

I don't get why people complain about too many bowl games. Would you rather not have games to watch every day?

Maybe you have something better to do than watch West Virginia and Texas A&M Monday afternoon.. but how are you harmed by them playing?

First, never lose that death grip you have on the obvious.

Second, so what? It's a bowl game on the Friday night of a four-day weekend. This isn't space travel, it's a 70-minute flight from Newark.

We've been fed a steady stream of nonsense involving fan support, markets, etc., etc., and those canards fall faster than Icarus the second they're tested. I was under the impression that a good fan base might actually want to travel further than an hour to see a bowl game.

I guess the definition changes to fit the narrative.

I wouldn't say that anyone is harmed by these more obscure games being played, since as consumers we have a choice whether or not we watch them. Just questioning if what we have now is better than what we used to have?

If you are a football junkie, obviously the current state is better. However don't be surprised when the stands look like a Pitt Homecoming Game. Hard to imagine many schools sending large contingents of fans to places like Detroit over Christmas to watch .500 Football Teams play. Good luck getting any local interest either. There needs to be a better pairing of teams with venue if these games are going to continue to be played.

Personally I think the threshold for qualification should be higher. 8 wins and at least .500 in conference play to make the cut. Yes we would have less games, but theoretically they would be better more interesting match ups. For crispes sakes Fresno State qualified for a bowl game with a losing record. Why?

I had never experienced schadenfreude until reading this and similar envious UConn threads regarding Rutgers in the B1G. Thanks guys.

There are plenty of interesting matchups. They just haven't happened yet.

If the standard for holding a sporting event was as high as you've made it - you could cancel the season for a dozen NBA teams. At least schools try to win bowl games.

This year, that would give us 6 ACC teams, 4 B12 teams, 5 B1G teams, 6 Pac12 teams, and 7 SEC teams, for 28 bowl-eligible P5 teams. That's with G5 and FCS games contributing to the 8-game win total. If they split and play only a P5 schedule, then OOC games are as difficult as conference games, so 8 wins is equivalent to a .667 conference record. This year 3 ACC teams, 3 B12 teams, 3 B1G teams, 5 Pac teams, 4 SEC teams, or 18 total, achieved that.

So with a P5 split and your standards, we'd have 9 bowl games.

Which if you are interested in matches between reasonably good teams would be about right.

If, however you are interested in filling TV hours during a slack time, giving 80 teams 15 extra practice sessions and providing a 5 day holiday for team and staffs. Then the current number is about right. As long as sponsors will pay for the air time the games between teams with .500 records will continue.

No fan base of a team that attends bowl games with some regularity will turn out in large numbers for a crap game in a crap city. Even Bama fans are smarter than that. UConn fans turned out in reasonable numbers for crap games (all of our games except for Fiesta) because it was a novelty for the base. I look foorward to the day when UConn fan turn up their noses at secondary bowls because it will mean we have a tradition of winning.
