First Round – Wednesday, March 1
  • Game No. 1 – No. 12 Wake Forest vs. No. 13 Virginia, 1 p.m. (ACCN)
  • Game No. 2 – No. 10 Clemson vs. No. 15 Pitt, 3:30 p.m. (ACCN)
  • Game No. 3 – No. 11 Boston College vs. No. 14 Georgia Tech, 6:30 p.m. (ACCN)

My only "consequence" game is this could be the last game for Pittsburgh Coach Lance White if the Panthers lose. His five-year contract is up after this season and while he seems to be a nice guy, his teams -- while they play hard -- are (still) finishing last. The Wonen's teams in Volleyball and Soccer are doing well, so I'm guessing the AD (who didn't hire White) will want to try a new approach. Stay tuned.

So of these 6 struggling programs, WF and Virginia have 1st year coaches. BC and GT have had some recent though both need to improve the results next year. That leaves Pitt and Clemson. Lance, while the team "plays hard" is still only 11-74 in ACC games. Time to go after 5 years. Amanda Butler has been at Clemson for 5 years now and has been underwhelming with a 27-60 record with her best year being the 1st with the prior coach's recruits. She is 3-14 this year in Quad 1/2 games and 1-5 in Quad 2 games. Honestly, she needs to go.

Not sure why @Crazyhorse is suggesting Lance would go back to FSU as Brooke has done a great job there and maybe she has a good working relationship with Lance for him to be her assistant as he would not be replacing a 1st year coach. While only peripherally aware of Brooke's efforts the last few years-interim HC, assistant and then full-time HC this year, If she thinks Lance can help as an assistant, I am thinking that is ok. What is your objection?

Wow, time flies! I hadn't realized Butler had been at Clemson for 5 years. If her contracts up, hard to argue that she deserves an extension. Clemson has recently directed a bunch of money towards its women's programs, most notably softball and a first-year lacrosse program. I can't see them letting their hoops progam stay stuck in mid-gear.

Wake Forest defeats UVA 68-57 and will move on to play Florida State for the third time this season. Both Jewell Spear and UVA's Camryn Taylor scored 19, with Spear being face guarded from the time she got off the bus.

UVA ended the season losing 11 of their last 12. They did lose McLain and Brunelle during that time. But they also ended up 14-14, I think better than any of Tina’s teams. They’ll be better next year with two top recruits. Coach Mox will build this program back.

What happened to Brunelle? Girl just hasn’t been able to get healthy for some time now.

I’m totally impressed with the job Coach Mox has done. I too hope she’s able to build the program up again. Charlottesville was a basketball Mecca when I was there in the late 80’s-early 90’s.

If I heard correctly, post Camryn Taylor and point guard Taylor Valladay are both going to take advantage of the "Covid Clause" and come back, as well. Like you said, they have some recruits coming, including Kymora Johnson the Top 25 Hoopgurlz guard. Promising first year.

Left foot issue. Just had surgery and Sam let everyone know how she's doing. As a fellow ND alum, I wish her nothing but the best.

Clemson Beats Pitt 71-53; Will Now Play UNC

(From the Associated Press)

Hannah Hank scored a career-high 19 points, Daisha Bradford had 15 points, six assists and four steals and 10th-seeded Clemson beat No. 15 seed Pittsburgh 71-53 on Wednesday in the first round of the ACC Tournament.

It was the fourth straight opening-round win for Clemson (17-14), which will attempt to even the season series with No. 7 seed North Carolina on Thursday. The Tar Heels won 69-58 on Jan. 29.

Hank and Amari Robinson combined for 19 points in the first half to help Clemon lead 33-20. The Tigers scored the first 14 points of the second quarter as Pitt didn’t make its first field goal until the 1:49 mark. The Panthers were held to just four points in the second quarter after going 1 of 18 from the field.

Clemson led by double figures for the entire second half.

Robinson had 10 points, eight rebounds and four assists for Clemson. Bradford made four 3-pointers, Hank added three and Clemson went 11 of 25.

Amber Brown scored 16 points for Pittsburgh (10-20). Dayshanette Harris added 12 points and Maliyah Johnson had 10.

Schedule of Day 2 of ACC Tournament Games, Thursday, March 2, 2023
(all games on ACC Network)

- 11:00 a.m. Florida State vs. Wake Forest.
Third meeting. FSU pummeled Wake in first, but Deacons played tough in 2nd game at FSU. Wake's PG turned an ankle yesterday. Can she play? (Winner plays Louisville)

- 2 p.m. N.C. State vs. Syracuse
Can Diamond Johnson play for the Wolfpack? Will Georgia Wooley reappear for 'cuse after missing the Pitt game in regular season ender? (Winner plays ND)

- 6 p.m. North Carolina vs. Clemson
North Carolina seemingly has everyone back from injury, which should be enough. However, Clemson has quietly won three in a row. (Winner plays Duke)

- 8 p.m. Miami vs. Boston College
Boston College's scrappers -- who rarely shoot 3's -- vs. the Hurricane's who have Hailey Cavinder bombing away with Destiny Harden doing everything else. (Winner plays Va. Tech)

Got a good one on ACCN - Wake was down 20 at the 9:15 mark in 3rd Q, tied it at 1:09 and is now up 11 with 2:37 left in game. Pretty wild.

I was watching that game ... wow, Wake Forest woke up and got the W! Looks like they play Louisville next. Hmmm.

Next up is Syracuse/NC State. I'm no Orange fan, but I do love an upset (to other teams!). The winner of that game will play Notre Dame.

FSU in free fall?

Back-to-back, double digit losses to Clemson and Wake Forest. Both are quad two losses.
Game efore these two losses? Barely escaped another loss to Wake by eeking out a one point win!

TaNiya Latson: No box score! looks like she did not play any minutes. Is she hurt or something else.

What's going on? Was she hurt in the Clemson loss where her stats were unimpressive?

According to reports, she was hurt and thus did not play.

Syracuse just doesn't have consistent scoring; I would like to see FLJ work on this going forward, as sometimes the worst part about watching 'Cuse play is just missed shot after missed shot ... the talent is there for them though, especially if they can keep recruiting local talent. They won't be a powerhouse but they could be a threat to other ACC teams at least. Right now 'Cuse looks like a bubble tourney team at best.

Wake Forest beat L'Ville last time around. Can they do it again playing their 3rd game in a row?

NC State scored a season-high 54 points in the paint, paced by Camille Hobby's 16 points and River Baldwin's 14 en route to a 83-58 win over Syracuse in the second round. NC State shot 60.9% from the floor for the game, and recorded 19 assists on 34 made baskets.

Jakia Brown-Turner also had a big day, with 16 points and was joined in double-figures by Azaiah James with 10.

NC State outrebounded Syracuse 41-26, after only being +2 on the boards at halftime.

NC State advances to play Notre Dame at 2 pm Friday.

Don't underestimate the Deacs. They beat Louisville earlier in the season, and will have most of the ctowd behind them.
I'm sure not underestimating Wake. I'm hoping for the Wake/ND/Duke "revenge tour" trifecta, but I don't think that my Cardinals are quite good enough to win three in a row against tough competition.

Thursday's semifinal win for NC State in the second round of the ACCT was Coach Wes Moore's 800th coaching victory.
Congratulations to both Coach Moore and NC State fans (and Chattanooga fans -- right? -- before that).
Class act and I'm an admirer of the work he's done (except for what will transpire between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. today!)
