Acaden Lewis decommits from KY

Don’t think he’d come here, I don’t even think we reach out. No space. Not worth it for both sides.

I know we were in the hunt for this guy before we signed Darius Adams. He is a point guard and was a top 10 recruit. Do you think the staff has reconnected with him and would be a good PG add?
Top 40 not top 10.

Lots of talk on the long transfer portal thread about him. Would love to have him but with Demary on board and Ball 100% starting I doubt he’s interested in coming to UConn to be a back up next season. Worth a call though. You never know.

I thought Silas is a combo guard and Solo is a shooting 2 guard.

Lewis is Lower ranked than Adams and people are skeptical Adams will even be in the rotation. Don’t wanna bring in another borderline 5* frosh to sit on the bench. Lewis is not the answer at backup PG. all in on Smith.

He would be a good back up behind Silas, right? Him and Adam’s would have some nice chemistry going into their sophomore and junior years. Not many others out there. We do have like 4 more schollies right?

I think we’d have interest but it seems likely that Lewis wants starter minutes. That won’t happen here.

Big loss but I’m sure they’ll cover it with a transfer

We have 3 starting-level Gs on the roster already, actively recruiting a backup PG, and have Darius Adams. I’ll take Acaden with open arms if he wants to come here, but I doubt he’d want to go to a place where minutes are so uncertain

Demary - Transfer(Smith) - Adams - Ball. Lewis is a shoot first pg too and 6'1". We want some real game experience in our next transfer backup guard.

Maybe they already did, and that’s why he decommitted.

We currently have 5 left if Alex stays. This year your can have 15.

When it was 13 - Hurley usually has 12. So at 15, I would guess 13-14 not using up 15 - plus too many bench spots.

Silas is not a main ball handler, but did so for UGA and I think he is more adept at being a "ready" combo guard who can play the point for us this Fall. Solo is probably adding some combo guard chops as his Chop Wood Carry Water is based on always improving. And Adams has a good handle for the ball, instincts for the game, but needs a year to be ready for lead PG duties as he is a combo guard.

We have 5 guards on the roster if you hear about Furphy as a Shooting Guard (Hurley has referenced him as that)

Guards: Demary, Ball, Adams, Mullins, Furphy
Forwards: Stewart, Ross, [Karaban]
Centers: Reed, Reibe

So doubtful we would pursue Acaden Lewis as a combo guard when we have 4-5 already.

9-10 as our core right now - and would expect +3-4 more skewing on bigs or capable point forwards.

We might have a chance if we want him . . .

“He was not going to Kentucky without ever seeing them practice. He had seen Duke practice multiple times. Same with UConn. He had been to USC multiple times. But he had never seen Pope run a practice even though Pope had built an incredible relationship with him,” Lewis’ father said. “His choice was going to be UConn.” -- State Journal, Nov. 18, 2024.

A lot has changed as far as available PT since then.

He left Kentucky when they brought in a transfer that's going to take minutes from him. I can't imagine he'd even consider coming here with Demary and Ball locked in the backcourt.

I thought Silas is a combo guard and Solo is a shooting 2 guard.
“When I first saw (Associate Head Coach) Kimani Young, he was just like, ‘Man, there goes my PG,'” Demary said on a Zoom call with Connecticut media Thursday. “Me hearing him say that gave me a lot of confidence in myself and it just made me feel secure with who I was and secure with him, knowing that he’s gonna be here for me, he’s gonna be that guy.”

“It just felt right. I had that gut feeling that Coach Hurley and his staff was just the right staff for me to commit to,” he said. “The reason for coming is here, I just want to be the next great point guard. Obviously these guys won back-to-back with great guards like Tristen Newton, Stephon Castle, look back even further, Shabazz Napier, Kemba Walker. I want to be one of those names. I wanted to come to a program that’s been about winning.”

Demary was recruited to play the point. And yes, Ball will be our 2 guard. We do need a back up PG but as I said I highly doubt Lewis is coming here to be the back up for a couple years at least. But as I said, you never know.

We can sell him on the idea that we have options and he has a chance to win the job. If the offense runs better with you out there, you’re going to play (ie Hassan this year taking the starting role). It isn’t necessarily an either/or thing with Demary either. We can use a two point guard system, since Demary and Smith are both good spot up shooters who can move off the ball for some of their minutes - and Demary can guard bigger players at the other end (which would mean Mullins comes off the bench, which might not be a bad thing either).

But there’s going to be PT available regardless. An experienced point guard who can get guys shots will have tremendous value. Solo is lethal catching and shooting and the freshmen will probably need the ball delivered at the right time to thrive rather than creating their own stuff.

Whether that’s enough to pry him away from somewhere that he can play 30+ minutes, I don’t know. I think “he will if he wants to win a title” is too simplistic. Kids are also worried about marketing themselves and building towards pro contracts overseas. But that’s where our coaches have to be convincing.

I would rather have Malachi Smith. Hopefully the feeling is mutual.

Smith is better than Acaden Lewis right now.

Plus, like others have said, if Lewis decomitted from Kentucky due to a transfer portal recruit they added which Lewis felt was a threat to his playing time, then UConn with Demary, Ball, and Adams would be a non-starter for Lewis.

Let's get Malachi Smith.

I want this kid in 1-2 yrs when he transfers again. He's a much better lead guard than Adams who were going to try and pull a Mahaney on (hopefully with better results), while Adams is a better scorer.

Billy Donovan’s former team manager from 2016. Seems too obvious if that’s the case. Why pick out a fake name that ties you to the guy you worked closely with?
Not sure why he did it, but the details from that interview he gave awhile back made it easier to figure out. Maybe it’s not him, but there’s a lot of coincidences.

I do not understand the school of thought that argues that we can't get Lewis because of existing PG's on the roster. We won in 2023 with TN, Joey California, Alleyne and Diarra as our main guards (not even counting Hawk or AJ). They all played a significant role. In '24 we won with TN, Cam, Diarra and Castle. And they all played a major role, as we know. Why can't we accommodate another top PG on this team, when Silas is the only true PG on the roster? I am not advocating for a particular player. I have not seen Smith play, and I have not seen Lewis play. What I know is that there are minutes available at the PG position for this team next year. And like Hurley said of the freshmen this year, and I say this with all due respect, but Silas has not won a game for UConn yet. This isn't the place where you expect PT just by showing up. Iron sharpens iron. I say bring the talent and let them fight for PT.
