@DaveBorges: Abu on #UConn: Kevin Ollie is a great man, 1 of my favorite coaches throughout whole thing, if not the favorite ...

In this respect, he is smarter than the average bear.

Exactly. Abu just talking out of his @ss. If Ollie was the best coach, then why does he war to play for someone that takes McD AA's and butchers them? To be fair, I doubt Abu will be a McD anyway. Lot of good forwards in this class, which is why while I'm very mad and disappointed, I'm not worried.

So let me go play for a guy that can't coach himself out of a bag.

He didn't prioritize that in the process haha. NC State made him feel like a "person" not just a basketball player ;) . The mosque visit impressed him on an official. He was surprised by that. NC State and coach Gottfraud can recruit but not develop players/coach. Just ask Warren...

He must really want to play away from home/ in a warm weather place. Completely understandable, but frustrating. Either that or his corner was giving him bad advice like NC states "system" will work great for him. That is a possible rumor.

Then why not go to Florida? This recruitment made no sense whatsoever

This is a very odd thing to say about the coach of a school you did not pick.

Well, glad to hear KO represented well. Too bad it wasn't enough to win the young man over. I hope his experience at NC State is better than Rodney's. I hope we get one of Larrier/Robinson/White and end up happy with how it worked out.

Funny that I go to nc state and I still think this is a dumb decision (purely based on basketball).

Especially when that school has won 3 national championships in the past 14 years

I'm not gonna sit here and criticize a kid for not choosing UConn. I'm sure he has his reasons for going to NC State; I wish him the best there, unless we meet in the tournament. Just found that quote weird, since you'd think Gottfried would be his favorite coach.

It could be that we're in a bad conference...

If he picks Duke or UNC I get it but if you're a kid who has a choice do you play for a team who will be one of the best annually in their conference or play with one who always finished middle or worst in the ACC? And to top it off you like the team's coach better you didn't choose............this is very strange!! Just don't think conference had as much to do with it as people may think...............

Could be. But the ACC doesn't have round robin anymore. Have a look at their schedule. You'd be surprised. NC State has many more games against mediocre teams like WF and Clemson rather than having to play UCF and USF like UConn, but UConn actually is playing more games against top 25-25 teams than NC State is.

And, another thing about being in a midmajor is lack of exposure, but UConn is on ESPN/2/CBS 16 times. NC State? 4.

Decision makes no sense.

other factors like campus life and style of play could also have been factors. it appears Florida and UConns system is about the same so if he liked NC states better than that gave them a unique advantage.

A system that doesn't win big and doesn't get guys into the NBA? Kind of a strange choice but I wish the kid well. I hope it works out well for him.

“They were real close, real close,” Abu said of the Huskies. “Kevin Ollie, he’s a great man. He might have been one of my favorite head coaches in the whole thing, if not the favorite. He’s a real guy, a friendly guy, real personable.
“UConn was a place where I definitely saw myself going. But I was more comfortable with the decision I made.”

Sounds kind of familiar...oh wait:

The school that came in second for me was …
“UConn. I gotta keep it real, it was super close. When I came back home from visiting there I said, 'I’m going to UConn.' Then I talked to my mom and she said to wait it out a little longer. The more I thought about it I knew that it was NC State. They were just in my heart. Coach [Mark] Gottfried did a great job recruiting me and every time I would shoot around at State it felt right. I remember when I was at UConn after we played pickup, I went back to the gym alone just to shoot around to see what feeling I got and it wasn’t the same. I didn’t sense that it was the right place for me.”
