Ash where have you been hiding? LOL What a performance by Ash and the entire team. Just think we are still in the development stages of building this team and getting them where Geno sees them. The future is getting brighter each game. I keep posting about we need more scorers. Ash was what the doctor ordered. Paige and Sarah are AA's. How many players are better then Sarah? We will find out Saturday when Juju and company come to CT. As great as last nite was and as great as the LVille game was we are still in the developmental stage for our team. Its gonna take time for everybody else to develop. Kaitlyn at the point is a good move. She plays with experience and confidence. KK to. KK is a burst of energy and Im encouraged to see her taking her shot when she has it. They will being to fall.

I mentioned we are in the developmental stage especially with our underclassman. The stages of learning and being taught what to do, then doing it in practice until the coaches feel your ready, then being able to do it in a game against competition, then being able to do it in a big game against top competition. This is where we're at now. We all want this to happen right away. It wont it takes time. There are times when you will fail and failure is nothing more then a learning experience. Failure teaches

you what you did wrong and with the assistance of good coaching who will make the necessary corrections by tweaking you until it becomes reflexive.

Every player on the team as a job that the coaching staff wants them to perform. As they get better at it and gain their coaches trust they will have more responsibilities. Our big right now IMO are being developed on how the coaching staff wants them to play. They are learning how Geno wants them to play defense, get position and rebound. When they feel comfortable they will learn more moves and everything that goes along with that to be a complete player. Their scoring will come as they are developed. Dont forget we are only a few games into the season and we're playing a bunch of ranked teams. When your learning how the coaches want you to play its tuffer against top competition.

I believe most of what the underclassman are learning is how Geno wants them to play the game. It takes time. Dont compare any of them either especially to Sarah. Sarah is an exception. Sarah is an amazin talent and play beyond her years. Right now we are depending on Paige and Sarah on offense. They are our go to players. When Azzi gets back she will be a go to player too and we are developing more scorers but it takes time. We do need more scorers and Geno has mentioned that. Ash mentioned that Geno was saying you guys hit all your treys in practice now you have to hit them in real games. Last nite they did. Alot of the early scoring was due to the zone defense they faced. It changed a bit in the second qtr and we made adjustments at half time and blew the game open again.

I am confident against USC on Saturday. Not because of Ash going off but because as a team we are beginning to gel. We arent making alot of mistakes and we are playing good defense. I think are defense will carry us on Saturday and I also think Sarah we put on a show which will make everybody see she is an AA.

@Tonyc, I’m with you most of the way. But we are fast approaching the moment when we can’t wave the magic wand and say “it’s only a few games into the season,” to make all criticism go away. 11 games is more than a few. I think we’re beginning to see where the strengths are and the weaknesses.

Yes, the conference schedule will give plenty of time to develop more strengths and minimize weaknesses. I’m very confident about this. But it try not to be blinded by mere potential. It’s time to start actualizing some of these potentials.

Ash surprised all of us last night, and we all hope she’s overcome some temporary problem… for good and all. But this is yet to be determined. One dazzling shooting night does not make a whole season. I hope to see her replicate at least part of what she did many times this season.

Jana is a work in progress and i really want to see more from her. I’m one of those who think the sky is the limit for her. And I know she’s coming back from injury. But the clock is also ticking. By the end of January, she needs to have reclaimed much more of her previous self. I believe in her, but belief only goes so far.

Another example: i have high hopes for Morgan. But she is the current foul-machine. She fouled out in just 12 minutes last night. Is that some sort of record? I love her energy and she has the making of one of those “Swiss army knife” players Geno loves so much. But she still looks confused or indecisive on the court a little too often for my comfort. I want to see her settle into a confident role on the team over the next few months.

And Allie, she can definitely hit the 3, and she’s okay on defense. But i want to see more from her: more energy, more decisiveness, more foot speed, more court savvy. This is who she was in high school and it’s time to scrape the stardust from her eyes and remember who she is. Again, please let the conference schedule be her workshop.

So, yes, i am hopeful, even confident. But the time for trading in possibilities is drawing to a close. After Saturday, the players with lots of potential have to get to work becoming who they really are.

So in 5 days did we go from "subthreshold depression" to "hypomania"?

It was a great performance by the Huskies, however ISU was completely over hyped. Their coach put them behind the 8 ball when he came out with a zone defense. UConn is too good to play zone defense against.
When you play a team that has had problems making the 3's you try to take out the interior area and force them to make 3's. After the first quarter he went to man to man and they still found the open person. He was darned if he did and darned if he didn't.

I'm cautiously optimistic...last night was grand
but unlikely to be duplicated...let's get real.

Paige and Sarah are the real thing, undeniable.
Ash was amazing...but was it too much to hope for that she will/can do that again?...the answer is unknown

When Azzi is back and Ash something of yesterday, In would be like Geno in the 3rd year of the Stewie troika...he knew and so will we.

The problem for me is the inexperience and developmental time required of the centers...Remember when he called out Tina after a NCAA loss saying he had no Center and it took T... 2 up and down years before she became the dominant force that she's been ever since.

So for the big girls, even with their indisputable gifts, it's going to take time

A ce moment...a very gifted team...a championship team? Still to be determined.
But it's an entertaining season and they're fun to watch.

Don't forget that AZZI and Griffen will be back in January/February. At that point, the defense will be feeding the offense AND ALL the Huskies eat using their strengths OR the Atomic Dogs may be a foursome.... and sometimes all 5 (with AG) might lighting up the scoreboard (>100 pts on most nights may be possible!!!).

Go Huskies!!!

A game like the one Ashlynn does a lot for person's confidence. In your mind, you know can do it. You have practiced shooting and making hundreds if not thousands of shots over the summer for your AAU team, middle school or high school team. Then in college it is even easier because you can just hit up one of the team managers and go to the gym and get up shots. So, for Ashlynn to have one of the hottest shooting nights, is going to be a huge boost to her confidence. I am just happy for Ashlynn. Well done, young lady!

I'll be a heck of a lot more amazed if they shoot anywhere close to that against Southern Cal.......
Yeah, if they have one more shooting night like that up their sleeve, I hope they save it for the title game! :) Beyond that, my fondest wish is for Ash to shoot 48-50% & 37-40% the rest of her career at UConn! I realize that’s a bit of a stretch but I think it’s possible.

My thoughts on USC are simply that we get through it with no injuries! I do not see that they have any advantages over us. I believe both our stars are better than both their stars and that our team as a whole is better than theirs as a whole. Does that guarantee a win? Of course not! They are a very talented team but in the absence of a freakish go off by one or more of their stars, or a collapse on the part of ours, I feel that we match up well with them and we are at home so I feel good about our chances! I just pray we can get through the game healthy and send the players home on a good note as we prepare for a long stretch of games that should allow our young players lots of minutes and a chance for some major improvement before the final stretch! This team has the potential to go from very good to the best in the country over these next three months!

Since Stevens left, we could only dream to have the frosh Tina Charles. Honorable Mention All_American. The soph Tina Charles was 3rd team All_Amercan. This current team with eventual Aubrey coming back is in a way like 99-00 in which the frontline held the fort while Bird, Sveta and Ralph did their thing. The same with our Big 3 of this year vs our past Big 3- they need to be excellent. Our frontline can do it. OFC not sure but when AG comes back - they have the potential to hold the fort.

Maybe you didn’t watch UConn last season. As a freshman, Ash averaged 11ppg on the season, and had several stellar games, her best game last season was scoring 26points, can’t remember against who though. Also had several games scoring in the high teens, and won Big East Freshman of the Year. Maybe her performance surprised you but to many on this board and Geno, this was no surprise.

As an observer to this board and having been around for 20 years, the post by Plebe above really reflects the emotions of this board per the play of the team. Elation to depression seems to govern the season. What is going to happen after they play South Carolina?

3 players showed up and scored big in the last game. Where was the scoring by Jana or Ice? The game play seems be governed by who gets hot for a specific game rather than consistent "excellence" as Geno would say for Team play.

I don't know if they can be the team to win the National Championship, but if they are, they really have to develop the inside and outside game to win every time. Elation/Depression/Elation on and off. While they figure this out, they should concentrate on "defense" and annoy every team they play.

You make good sense but, I remember a couple of UConn’s National Championships where Geno had said he only needed one player. Her name was Diana Taurasi.

ND got hot against us at their place. At their place had alot to do with it imo. They lost two games away from their place. They are a very good team with 3 good scorers. We're not their yet unless Ash can continue to score double digits and when Azzi gets back well then we have 4 scorers. A lot of things happened that didnt fair well for UConn at ND. We were still close and made some runs but with Sarah on the bench and ND shooting over 55% from trey well that was the difference. I believe with a healthy Azzi along with Paige and Sarah we are special. Add is Ash and we are really good. Just some thoughts.

Tony, you're the best, but ND has the best backcourt in the country and that backcourt torched the Huskies. They would have done it at Gampel, too.

Geno goes out of his way to recruit versatile players like Sarah, a point forward. I think in time Morgan might be a point-forward, too, and Aubrey has played all forward positions. Paige played power forward last season. My point is that focusing on frontcourt/backcourt might not mean as much for this team when players can play multiple positions. Per Geno in the Iowa State postgame presser, he wants three scorers to show up every game and he doesn't care who it is. He didn't say "I want two guards and a post player to be high scorers every game". It doesn't mean the team lacks excellence if the three high scorers are listed as guards in the roster.

I probably shouldn’t have said ‘surprised.’ That word seems to have thrown you off. I am very pleased, even ecstatic, to have seen Ash’s great shooting night. You may not have noticed that “many on this board” have been worried that Ash had not recovered her mojo from last season. I am not one of them, because like others I figured the core of Ash’s game is defensive intensity, which has carried over pretty well from last season, and that her overall confidence comes from this. I figured her shooting mojo would return soon enough.

But I admit that I wasn’t expecting a 20pt explosion in the first quarter, and against a solid opponent. Apparently you were and my hat’s off to you. I also expect some reversion to the mean and that she will go on to produce many solid but not quite so spectacular performances.

But don’t worry. I can still indulge in exuberant optimism’ — I haven’t lost my mojo :D . Maybe she’ll go on to average 27ppg and shoot 90% from 3 all season, eclipsing many previous UConn records along the way. Just kidding.

The thing about @Plebe’s comical post above is that people can mistake it for a serious critique of the BY in particular, as though this isn’t typical of all fan behavior. There’s even a poem about this: Casey at the Bat. When we lose, “…there is no joy in Mudville...” This is what fans do, it’s the rollercoaster fans ride, and it’s fun to joke about it from time to time. I’m pretty confident Geno and the team are not distracted by the fans’ emotions expressed on a web forum.

So, if Ash becomes the superstar who carries the team to an NC this season, I will be pleasantly surprised. I’m sure you’ll be pleased too, but I trust you won’t be surprised.

Ash surprised all of us last night, and we all hope she’s overcome some temporary problem… for good and all. But this is yet to be determined. One dazzling shooting night does not make a whole season. I hope to see her replicate at least part of what she did many times this season.

Kind of funny, with only 11 games so far 1 night can make a season.

Ash up to 9ppg on 49/44/100 splits.:)
That on only 24 min, compared to 31 min per game on the shorthanded team last year. Joking a bit, but this is against the tougher schedule, not yet BE.

I'm also thrilled with Morgan. If the 24/25 Huskies were shorthanded, she would also be getting 30 minutes. Right now, even though she is a guard, she has been out 4th front court player.

The Big East tourney final is March 10. Almost 3 full months for our slackers to keep improving.
