A new year of basketball: Dec. 30-Jan. 6

I see that DePaul opened 3Q on a 12-0 run to put some distance on Providence. Morris and Bekelja have 16 each.

But Morris and Lexi Held now have 4 fouls. Could spell major trouble for DePaul, which isn't a deep team this year.

The Friars played the beginning of the 3rd just like we did last night, more turnovers than shots. DePaul took advantage.

Providence got it down to 10, then DePaul drained a couple of 3s, to make it 80-64 with 1 minute to go. Bruno put his bench players in.

Drake beat Northern Iowa 104-87, Hittner scored 37 (18-18 from the FT line, that's a lot of trips to the charity stripe). And that was w/ UNI outscoring DU 34-16 in Q4.

Hittner had a poor OOC by her standards. Starting the new year off on the right foot.

Creighton-Marquette going down to the wire, Jays up 3 w/ under 2 minutes to play.

Didn't catch this game, but looking at the box score Creighton really won this at the line, 16-21 vs. 1-3 for Marquette.

 Wow. Disparities happen, but that's is huge.

Watching Washington @ Cal. Decent start to the game. UW jumped out early but Cal has tied it. Melgoza looking like the Melgoza of old, I think she has 10 already in Q1.

36-24 UW at halftime, Melgoza w/ 18 on 7-9 shooting.

Cal has 14 O boards but not doing much with it.

.-.
Washington looking extremely sketchy in Q3, leading 44-36 but that could evaporate fast. I don't know if they are capable of playing back to back good halves of ball, I haven't seen it yet.

UW leading 52-47 thru Q3. I don't like the look of this, they've coughed up leads in Q4 several times this year. It's pretty much Melgoza or nothing at this point. She has 26.

56-55. Cal is gonna pull this one out. I've seen this too many times, good first half by UW followed by a terrible second half.

edit--Cal grabs their first lead since the first minute of the game 57-56. This was a winnable game but Dawgs are blowing it.

You really battle with fan pessimism, huh?

Too nervous to watch. UW went up 3, Cal went up 3 almost instantaneously, now it's tied w/ 1 minute left.

.-.
Ugh. Henson hits 1 or 2 FTs, UW up 67-64. Cal advances ball to halfcourt on TO, 6.5 seconds left.

Whew. 3 hit from rim, bounced out of bounds w/ .6 seconds left.

Melgoza went cold after a 7-7 start, but she finished the game w/ huge 3 from the corner and then a bank shot in the lane to give UW the lead for good. Finished 13-25.

Ha it must feel satisfying for Wynn to accomplish what that turncoat who left her cupboard bare (Neighbors of Arkansas) couldn't -- win at Berkeley

This was actually an important win for UW. Don't look now but after this win they're 7th in the Pac-12 in Massey (#57), and their nonconference win over Iowa actually gives some hope that they can build an NCAA at-large resume **if** they can win enough games in the Pac-12.

I didn't know where to put this...and didn't think it was worthy of a thread, but....

When I got home from bowling last night, I was treated to four games simultaneously from the Pac 12 on the various Pac 12 networks. I kept switching back and forth between UCLA/Arizona State...and Arizona/USC.

That conference race is going to be entertaining, for sure.

Full day of Big South Hoops about to tip off on ESPN+ at 2pm EST, highlighted by the big Campbell @ UNC-A matchup. USC-Upstate tussles with my HPU Panthers also at 2pm.

Who are you rooting for between the Camels and the Bulldogs? (That's quite the interesting clash of mascots.)

I think Campbell is better....... they have a victory over UNC-G, though they did get blown out by Wake Forest. Usually though I root for UNC-A unless they are playing HPU.

HPU was down 9-1 early in the first quarter.... but rallied to take a 24-15 lead at the end of the 1st quarter.

High Point has had a really rough season so far, 2-9 ouch

tough year for the methodist schools in NC so far.... HPU, Duke, Brevard.... all struggling... not sure about NC Wesleyan.

Speaking of methodists..... in the battle of east vs west ..... Methodist at Greensboro is happening right now in Division III action. My Pride is up 41-23 at the half. Thats the game I should have attended today.

NCAA Tourney seems like a bit of a pipe dream, but I think NIT should be attainable. I give almost no chance of beating Stanford in Maples, but then they return home for another game against Wazzu. Realistically should be 3-1 w/ 2 road wins under their belt. Should be able to find some more wins against teams like Utah and Colorado, Cal at home, maybe USC?

Sure would like to have a do over in those late collapses against Tulane and Vandy. That's a big part of why I got pessimistic last night, they haven't been closing games very well this season.
