A new year of basketball: Dec. 30-Jan. 6

In their last tourney.... the 2018 MEAC basketball tourney, both Hampton's mens and women's teams made the finals. In the MEAC.. they have the men's and women's finals back to back. To the delight of the rest of the MEAC schools..... Central and NCA&T knocked off both sets of Pirates to make sure they wouldnt leave the league with conference championships. I know I was happy as well.
I don't see the Big South as a step up; that was an odd decision.

The difference may not be perceptible from the perspective of elite power conferences, but there is a difference between the two, in money and visibility.

"Last week, Hampton announced it would join the more visible and wealthier Big South Conference in July 2018, a change intended to raise the athletic profile of one of the most academically successful historically black colleges and universities. News reports indicated that the university has been in talks with the Big South for years, and Hampton's president, William Harvey, has been characterized as long wanting to advance the profile of Hampton athletics and the institution over all."

An interesting article that touches on the reactions and motivations behind the move:

To be sure, it was controversial.

From the article linked by @triaddukefan comes this tidbit as well:

The coaches are gambling, or hoping, that Hampton’s affiliation with a predominantly white conference will help with the recruitment of talented athletes that HBCUs have been losing to predominantly white schools. The MEAC is ranked 32nd in conference power rankings. The Big South is 21st.
Because HBCUs have been seeded so low during the annual NCAA Division I men’s and women’s basketball tournaments, there has been talk among some that HBCUs should have their own postseason tournaments. In football, the champion of the Southwestern Athletic Conference and the MEAC meet in the Celebration Bowl.

Boise State raced out to an early 16-point lead at Wyoming, but the Cowgirls have fought back into it and have taken the lead on a 9-0 run in 4Q.

The woman commentator, whom I hesitate to call an "analyst", is a hilarious/ridiculous homer who whines about every call that goes against Wyoming and praises every call that goes for them.

For the second year in a row the Broncos will go down in Laramie. BSU has been a bit of a disappointment to me.

Ha it sounds so professional when the "color analyst" is clapping through the mic.

Wyoming wins 73-68 and moves to 3-0 in MW. Boise State played a miserable 4th quarter and Wyoming hit key shots down the stretch. McGwire led BSU with 18 points and 9 rebounds but couldn't hit anything late.

Boise State, Middle Tennessee and Rice have fallen way short of the hype this year (although MTSU did get a win over TCU last weekend).

I cut MTSU a little slack because three of the players I thought would be major contributors (Eternati Willock, Rellah Boothe, and Ra’Shika White) haven’t played this season due to transfer or injury, but agree.

Rice has been really disappointing given what they returned and how they performed last year, and a solid Boise State returned a lot and added McGwire, so I thought they’d be better too.

Not sure if it counts as an exhibition... but My Tornadoes of Brevard College are battling with the Terriers of Wofford. Wofford leads 57-27 in the 3rd. Interesting that the Southern conference hasnt started full fledged conference games yet. Furman takes on Division II Newberry today. UNC-G battles DII Concord College Saturday after playing DII Lenior Rhyne Yesterday.

McGwire looks a lot thinner than I remember from her Oregon days.
Yes. She lost the weight during her redshirt season last year in Boise. Very happy for her. She obviously made a major commitment to her conditioning after leaving Oregon.

After underwhelming in multiple games since their upset of Oregon, Louisville is demolishing Clemson on the road, up 50-22 at the half.

Miami is up 32-20 at Georgia Tech. This would be the Hurricanes' best win of the season so far.

Georgia Tech has stormed back to take the lead on Miami in 4Q, on an 18-3 run to take a 4-point lead.

What's going on with Quinnipiac? They just lost to a terrible Iona -- I'm mildly surprised by this. It seems the MAAC goes through Poughkeepsie this year.

Miami about to fall to Georgia Tech in the mighty ACC down by 5 with 17 seconds left.

Marist is definitely top dog in the MAAC this year.

Quinnipiac was decimated by graduation, lost their top 4 scorers from last year's team -- which itself was a step down from the team they'd been the two years prior.

Georgia Tech scored only 31 points through 3 quarters, and then exploded for a 30-12 fourth quarter for the win.

Miami is still without anything resembling a quality win -- and somehow are still ranked in the AP poll.

Incarnate Word gets their first win over a D1 team this year, when this 3-pointer by Nicholls circles the rim, hovers for a moment, and then falls out:

Vanderbilt taking Auburn to the woodshed, up 47-18 at the half.

LSU up 34-32 at halftime over Alabama.

Georgia slogs through a closer-than-expected win over Ole Miss, 58-51. Not a game I'm sad to have missed.

I'm really enjoying tonight's studio commentary work by Alana Beard on the ACC Network.

LSU defeats Alabama. LSU's trio were the stars again (Pointer, Mitchell, Aifuwa)

Solid opening start to conference play
