It is Kentucky Derby time. Before the modern media clowns turned this into a parody of itself, the pre-race show was like a gift to those of us who enjoy all things horses. Now it is a Hollywood circus of stupid, inane and bad taste revelry of the B, C, D, E list of fatuous jerks. So, the horses don't know it has turned into a bad taste circus and they still perform. Turn it on 10 minutes before the race and spare yourself the reminder of where we are as a society.

The tasteless inanity and the race is on NBC. 2019 Kentucky Derby – NBC Sports

I will piggyback on this thread to point out a non-women sports event that may have a modicum of interest for some.

I am looking forward to the Barcelona - Liverpool Champions League Semifinal
(First Leg at Barcelona). Anytime I can see Messi play is a wonderful highlight for me.

Game on TNT 3PM EST May 1. 1 hr preview at 2PM.

and Liverpool looks to be a very strong team. 2nd in the Premier League behing Manchesterr City (by 1 pt) but MC already choked out of the Champions League

Nice story on Liverpool

I am looking forward to the regular season final weekend of SEC (and any other conference that ESPN decides to broadcast???) softball games on ESPN and the SEC Network. BTW, Eric Frede is now a regular play by play announcer on the SEC Network. Yeah.

I will also be watching softball. I do wish there were more options to the SEC games that are being shown though. They need to show more PAC 12 games.

Back to the Derby- unbelievable NBC does a four (4) hour show for a race that lasts around 2 minutes. Talk about overkill...like @RockyMTblue2 says, just tune in 10 minutes or so ahead of the race- watch the horses go into the gates (1 or 2 always balk but are eventually shoved in there) and then the race itself.

I'm not a racing fan but I always try to watch the Triple Crown races. In my lifetime no horse has ever matched or even come close to the great Secretariat.

Well, Back to soccer, Barcelona leads 1-0 at the half. Messi had been good but I had forgotten how sublime Suarez has been (since he outgrew his habit of chewing on opponents ears), Suarez with a world class run in the box and extended tippy toe touch.

Well, Messi scored 2 goals in 2nd half after Liverpool was dominating and threatening big time to tie it up with an important away goal.

The first goal was a very opportunistic but mundane play but the third was a pinpoint free kick goal at 30 yards hit with such force, curve and accuracy. Not to be believed. Even the Liverpool coach was smiling from ear to ear (even more than Geno after Morgan William)

Done deal 3-0 Barcelona.

Ah-hem, returning to the point ... Sham was a magnificent horse who had the misfortune of coming along the year Secretariat became legend. The horse gave all he had and Laffit Pincay's whip, so liberally applied to him in the Derby and even more in the Preakness was disturbing and I could never look at Pincay ever again with respect.

I apologize for creating the swerve to softball...I am usually commenting in a negative way about creating a swerve in a thread, especially if it is a multi page thread, and yet here I was, doing the same thing. Sorry @RockyMTblue2.

During that 4 hr show there will be 3 grade 1 and 2 grade 2 stakes races that will feature some of the top distance and surface specialists in the country. Earlier in the card there are a couple of high priced races for young horses that have never won and often it's a late bloomer who ends up on top at the end of the year. A few of those races will likely be more exciting than the Derby which has become a boring parade since the qualifying rules changed. Those with no interest in predicting and backing horses can still enjoy watching these athletes run. And for those who do enjoy wagering will discover that those earlier races usually produce a few bombs.

Too bad about the favorite. He was a total toss-out.

Two things in my lifetime that blow my mind. Looking up in the night sky of 1957 and seeing Sputnik crossing the heavens. Secondly, Secretariat's win in the Belmont Stakes by 30 lengths.

He damn near lapped the field. A truly magnificent horse.
