A Look at St. John's Since Our Last Matchup

Not claiming one was a better player than the other, but McNeeley had a good amount more bulk to him than Mullins has. The past few games we've seen opponents isolate a player on Mullins who, due to difference on strength, was able to back him down for an easy layup multiple times.
Uconn coming in at 5.5 already, looking like it might bump to 6.5. Hmmm.

And Mullins reaches much too much and picks up some bad fouls.

I'm honestly suprised the coaching staff allows him to keep doing it.

Saw a mock this AM with Mullins at 25 to the Nuggets. Wouldn't be a bad place for him to go, but would he leave for 25?

Mullins is unique player - I can't say I can think of a comp for him either in UConn lore or NBA. I think we've talked about a taller Reed Sheppard, but not even sure that applies. From a style perspective, not sure what he is exactly.

I have seen him going in the top 15 as well. He is all over the map. The next few weeks may clear some of that up.

last one i saw had him at 12 to Portland

.-.
I think there

I guess my point is, as it comes to matching up with these big/athletic teams like a StJ, I don't see our team makeup being that different 5-2, and bench. We still have many of the same pieces as last year, that major difference being Silas at PG. Yes, it has filled a major hole, but we are kinda the same across the rest of the floor. Silas' issue has been turnovers as well - not what you want against StJ. Let's see what they can do tomorrow.
The bench depth is a massive improvement year over year. When those are guys are engaged, we are a much different team.

Agree - there are a lot of very good players in that 10-30 range.

He's going all over the place between early and late first round. I don't sense he's what you would call a shoe-in prospect like some of these others that have had massive games and flash a lot of on ball stuff.

I know we all fear this match-up and rightly so. But there's a bit of a false narrative of how amazing St. Johns has been playing of late. They were losing to Xavier on the road before a big 2H, were down 15 in the 2H at home vs. Seton Hall, needed OT at home to beat Xavier, were trailing late in the 2H vs. Marquette, and were tied with Providence at home when the fight happened. They crushed Creighton at home; we crushed them by the same amount on the road.

To be clear, yes, they're playing better than us, but it's not like they've looked amazing every game or even most of them.
Let's make sure we're winning by halftime and then just cancel the second half. 😄

It's not like we have had our share of close and overtime wins.

Can't discount their impressive long winning streak. With that said, all I want is to finish the game with at least one more point than them. I don't really care by how many points we beat them by. Just beat them!

Thank you!! They have certainly looked beatable.

I can't disagree with that, I'm just saying I'm not sure the makeup of this team has changed drastically.

I'm also not sure how great a QB Silas is. I think he's a very talented PG, but I haven't really seen him assume the QB role with all that much depth yet. He's a great defender, and much better athlete than Newton, but he doesn't quite run the floor like Newton did, yet.
Newton was special but Is Silas surrounded by Donovan Clingan the way Newton was? You think that factors in? Silas is our best player with double doubles, triple doubles, he makes the 3, drives, defends. His assist numbers are amazing. I surely appreciate his talent and our team would be middle pack BE without him.

Silas is a home run transfer portal pickup. For tomorrow's game he will need help. He cannot be the only one tasked with breaking the pressure that St. John's will bring.

Do we play Smith with him for some stretches? It’s games like this I really miss having 3 ball handlers like Tnew, Cam and Steph

Can't disagree. Of course the players around factor in. They're very different players. Newt was cool/collective, more of a director, saw over the defense. Silas is more of a bulldog.

He’s plenty cool.

I think right now the best comp is Hawk. Maybe if he stayed two more years Ray Allen.
