Honestly that game felt like last season all over again. Control the game for long stretches, build a good sized lead, and then cough it up with an inability to score or get stops and a barrage of head-scratching turnovers, a loss of composure, and a disappearing coach.
I figured it was done when Cole and Whaley got out-hustled at the opening tip of overtime and Auburn promptly hit a three.
Then I really figured it was done when Hawkins coughed up the ball changing hands - a day after someone on here said he was the best they'd ever seen at protecting the ball - or when Jackson got that rebound that would have allowed us to stretch the lead out to two possessions and gave it away.
I'm still not sure how they won but it was a just result because I do believe they were the better team.
Cole is so important to this team. Not sure what they do if he is ever unavailable.
Sanogo was a monster in the first half, not very good (in my opinion) in the second half, and then turned it on again in the extra sessions.
Polley was huge. Those threes in the first half righted the ship and he was obviously massive down the stretch.
Whaley played an absolutely spectacular game on the defensive end. He rushed the shot at the end of regulation and obviously committed a brutal foul on that three but what a defensive impact.
Martin was okay. Got some big buckets but looked a little bit like the guy who bullies weaker teams today.
Jackson was not good. Akok was not a factor. Gaffney was not good.
Hawkins is going to be a problem. Excited to see how much better he gets, but he is instant offense.
Walker Kessler seemed freakishly tall (but not all that great). Obviously Jabari Smith is going to be a hell of a player, but the kid I really loved is the fat point guard, Johnson. What a stud, love that kid's game.
All in all it's hard to complain about a tourney win over a ranked team. This team can definitely be really good.
