I would argue that Maryland's defense is pretty good, while not at the SC, Stanford, Baylor or UCONN level, they are not "bad" as stated above. I would say Iowa's defense IS BAD. Lisa Bluder has a great offensive philosophy however she probably needs to shake up her staff and bring in a defensive coach-hey Nykesha Sales from UCF could be an option...

A few other thoughts came to me watching this game:
  • Angel Reese is pretty impressive. Too bad she missed most of the season, otherwise she could be considered for many awards.
  • Brenda earned a well deserved Coach of the Year this week
  • Maryland is as dominant in the Big Ten as UConn, Baylor or Stanford have been in their leagues.
  • I had forgotten Brenda replaced one of her assistants that defected to Ole Miss (along with Austin) and I wonder what insight @TerpWomenFan can shed on that person and what effect they may have had on this team? No one could have predicted that this team would be this good given all the defections and new faces.
Clark at the half 4 dimes, 3 turnovers, 3 of 8 from the field. If Maryland is not elite defense, how might Clark perform against the elite?

edit three minutes into the 3rd quarter Clark 4 dimes, 4 turnovers and 6 for 12 as she hits 3 of 4 in the quarter.

Massey has Maryland's defense ranked 60th. Not in the range of Iowa's which is 246th, but not what I'm thinking of when great defensive tests come to mind.

Maryland's defense gives up 13 ppg more this season than last season. The Terps give up about 70 ppg which is average. Maryland's ability to score puts pressure on opponents to score, which often leads to quick and/or bad shots.

Clark will probably score 40 points but they'll lose 95-80 or something.

Might be a hot take but I could see Diamond Miller being the #1 draft pick in 2023. She is really really good.

I said it before and I will say again, the Big10 other than Maryland is littered with 25-40 ranked type teams and also, this Iowa team is not nearly as talented other than Clark, drop off, Czinano, drop off, Warnock. Lisa needs to get more talent to support Caitlin and get a defensive minded assistant to improve this porous defense.

Clark against any elite type defenses could struggle particular if the passes she sends to these teammates don't translate into hoops. Clark is still a phenomenal player but just quite "Paige like" ....

This appears to be a bad matchup for Iowa and a good one for Maryland. Often a team playing a fast pace like Iowa will unnerve a team used to a more normal pace and throw everything off. Maryland likes playing the same pace, though, and has more scoring weapons.

When Collins is stroking 3pt shots as smoothly as a guard, wow.

5 minutes remaining 6 dimes, 6 turnovers and 7 of 18 from the floor for Clark.

Czinano is playing her 4th game with heavy minutes in 4 days and is 10 of 13 from the floor, 7 boards and 1 turnover and she has been banging and running.

Paige has the freedom but her own view of the game is to always look for high percentage shots.

If Paige ran down the floor with 3-4 of her teammates not yet past halfcourt and dribbled into 1-on-1 fadeaways she'd be on the bench quicker than you can blink.

Iowa shot 53%, but rebounds and turnovers gave Maryland 20 more attempts which was the game.

Over Boston? Or Bueckers if she declares early?
Not Bueckers if she declares early, but potentially over Boston. She's the perfect prototype to be a star in the league and is a match up nightmare.

Even though Maryland won the title handily, I think a VERY good case could be made for naming Czanino the tourney MVP.
Only because MD divides their bounty and Owusu had for her a subpar Tourney.

That's great for Czinano but it doesn't change that Clark has played insane minutes and fatigue is likely a big reason why she didn't seem as "on" today. It's likely the only time in her collegiate or pro career where she'll play 4 games of 35 minutes all in a row.

She torched Maryland for 34 last time they met, so a less than stellar showing today doesn't indicate she'll play poorly against better defensive teams.
