5 year proposal... ? support or oppose

I'm not a fan but I could support it under a few conditions.

First, a player gets a 5th year if has spent at least the previous 2 years at the school.
The student is taking post grad classes and maintaining a healthy GPA.
The players 5th year NIL money is limited.

I have my reasons and I don't know if the NCAA would be able to implement any or all of them or would have interest to do so.

i think it should pass but not effect this years senior class. Have it start and become active effective after this seaon is concluded

I don't like it. Four years in college is one of those basic things that you could count on, and now it's out the window
There's a reason colleges track graduation rates on a 6 year basis. For most people, it takes more than 4 years to graduate college

To be fair, it's been out the window for at least 6 years now. The number of waivers is insane. Guys who played 4 years of 30+ games are looking for waivers

Yeah I get that. Still seems like a basic standard to try to follow

This!
  • My Mom graduated UConn the same year my brother (UConn Med) graduated High School
  • Took me 11 years to finish @ UConn, then on to Duke for MBA
My Mom and I didn't graduate, according to standards some are trying to re-impose on athletes ... if this is truly about education, the new models (NIL, Transfer Portal) are set up for these young athletes to do just that - get an education, and then some; opportunities that many could only dream of (which really gets to the issue, imho) --- I don't throw stones b/c I live in a glass house

I hate it but I understand why Baker is trying to do it/doing it. There was way too much mayhem and challenges for waivers. As much as I hate it I hate it way more right now with all these 25 year olds and guys looking to be in college for 6-9 years. The implementation for it needs to start next year though, there's already way too much mayhem right now.

Like everything else though lawyers will challenge it and judges seem to always rule against the NCAA and anything which benefits college sports.

this makes way too much sense, so the answer is no, they wouldn't have any interest in doing so

This shit is a mess. Oh, please more chaos. I dont care if it leads to less chaos in the future. Try to change shit we really care about. Like a transfer limit.

Oppose. If this is allowed what happens to the portal players that signed and thought they were starting. Hines becomes a backup to Reed? Giltay never plays? We have room at PF for Alex for sure and Smith at PG. Junior County? Maybe some guys decommitt. Total mess to start this.
We’re going to have players with grey hair? Our new team sports drink is Geritol?

I support it just because it at least cuts down on the 25-26 year olds and the 22 year old Europeans joining.

It wouldn’t be much different than what we see now or saw in the COVID years either. Hell, Newton and Cam were both 5 year players.

Oppose. I hated the Covid year. I thought it was really bad for freshmen. It ultimately reduces the total number of people who get to play college basketball.

Why stop at 5 years?

I guess its better than we have now, but I still think college is a four year experience (I get 5 for redshirting and medicals). If you are medically out more than a year to me is TS. Not everything in life is fair. So yes its an upgrade but then again any structure is since there is none now.

It's funny, we all seem to oppose. We seem to oppose most of this nonsense. It almost makes you wonder whether they care about us fans at all....

oppose, 5 years to play 4 and schools/players should start utilizing redshirt years with more frequency for guys who aren't going to play except garbage time minutes. I wish Jayden's first year was a redshirt like his brother.

really? most people or athletes? I think 95% of people I went to college with finished in the standard 4 years

Eventually we will have players playing 15+ year careers in college. It’s a fully professional league sport now. All the pretense of “school” will disappear.

They care about money. That’s it. They don’t care about fans or the game or even (and especially not) academics in the slightest.

Well, that’s what this rule eliminates. No more “getting hurt every year, I get another go!” bs

Or college basketball should adopt the football rule to play 33% of the season and still redshirt. That would be valuable for everyone
