You see them all over college football every Saturday. Arkeel this year and last is our only guy that has shown he can turn a routine play into a home run play. Foxx showed it for one game last year. When you don't have that ability you have to be almost perfect in your execution on too many drives.

I like Thomas a lot, but he hasn't shown that, he just hasnt. I do think Beals can be that type of player. I expect to see a couple of others develop into that.
Yes there are a lot of game breakers. But not many teams have more than a couple. The teams that have more than a couple are usually the very top teams. It also depends on how you define "game breaker."

I would love it if we get another W and I'll be okay if we don't make a bowl with 5 wins. Even in our losses, because UConn has been making these games so close at the end (with the exception of Cinci), I've actually gotten that sick excited/nervous feeling (the mizzou game is the perfect example), and it's a good feeling to have back again!

I'm excited for next year, and I'll be purchasing 2-4 tickets in the preferred seating on the second deck. Big change compared to the young alumni section.

I would've signed up for 4-5 (2-3) in a heartbeat back in August.

More important than the actual results is the progress we've shown. People expecting flawless performances every week are simply delusional. We've had ups and downs but the overall trend is way up.

Think of where our special teams were after the Mizzou game. It was downright embarrassing. Since then, while not perfect, we've improved ten fold. The OL played it's best game in years Friday night.

This weekend's game will not be easy. If we lose, it doesn't mean the progress isn't real and if we win it doesn't validate the drama queens who post Pollyanna type BS scorning those who have knocked Diaco in the past. One game at a time right now. But trending up.

Couldn't disagree more, but to each his own. You have to imagine how bad we were and what it takes to get back to what we were to think that this year we were going to be bowl good. We still aren't out of the equation this year. I can only imagine what Nebraska fans think these days.

I think Noel Thomas has shown some of that ability, too. Anyway, not too many teams have a lot of regularly back-breaking players.

We differ only on what it takes to be mediocre bowl eligible. I submit that it is much more difficult to be a 2 win team than it is to be a 6 win team. If you stop shooting yourself in the foot you should be able to get to six wins.

If we don't shoot ourselves in the foot against Missouri and USF, we'd be right around six with a win this week.

Last season was a self inflicted shooting gallery. Merely by stopping digging they were bound to improve. We are a little better on the field once you remove the suicidal mistakes, but most of the improvement in the record is from not being so terrible. If we played as cleanly last season, still not that clean, we'd have won 6 easy.

You have simply been in denial as to what has become of the program in the last 4 years. I suspect nothing will change your mind about this. So that's all.

Need to beat Tulane. ECU win was nice, but a real barometer of progress is winning the games we were supposed to win. Bad teams can always rise up and pull an upset here and there (See: UConn-UCF in 2014).

We should have beaten Nova, Army and UCF. USF could have gone either way IMO, and unfortunately it didn't go our way.

But to know you are really making progress as a program is to consistently beat the teams you are better than every time.

Right now I think we are on the right path, but I am not ready to give a complete vote of confidence until I see them go down to NOLA and get a win over Tulane.

Yes, it's been a long, hard road to mediocrity.
I may have to have my sarcasm meter serviced, but yes, yes it has. To be honest we're not quite there yet, but I like the trend line.

A wee bit snarky maybe but I intended no sarcasm. Your meter is fine.

I'm going to start this by saying I think UConn gets win #6 to be bowl eligible. But there's a real good chance there are several 5-7 teams going bowling this year (just by the nature of the number of bowls.) I think a bowl would be positive even at 5-7, what do the rest of you think?

EDIT: The math. 40 bowl games. 80 teams. 128 FBS teams. 48 non-qualifying teams.
There are already 27 teams with 6 or more losses.

I wanted 3-4 wins and to be competitive in all games. Outside of Cincy this year, it's met my expectations let alone exceeding them. Like other said, winning made me want more and the USF game makes me angry. However, if I'm trying to stay in reality, the improvements this team made this year so far has me very excited for next year and the the rest of this season. I will be disappointed if we lose to Tulane but it's a factor of enjoying winning games again.

It's hard to stay in the reality of where we came from last season. However, I'll gladly take where we are right now knowing that this team has shown that they can be very good moving forward.

Here is my take. We are about where I thought we should be but better than I thought we would be. But I think we need to at minimum beat Tulane. A loss there undoes all the positives of the ECU victory. Tulane is not a good football team by the way. And I'm with subba on being bowl eligible. Just getting there at 6-6 means you are a decidedly mediocre team. Better to be decidedly mediocre than awful but hardly something to hold a parade to celebrate.

I agree with you for the most part except we have just endured a stretch of 4 putrid years of football where we have been labeled one of the worst football programs in the country.

We are now "Risin."

Posts like this remind me of the guys in college who had a history of dating ugly girls. They would finally date an average one, would have cut off their apendage to get her, but then felt they were proving something by pretending that they weren't happy that they were finally sleeping with someone decent looking because they felt better pretending that they shouldn't admit to being happy until they dated the prom queens.

Whatever.

We don't need a program with self-esteem issues.

Psychiatrists would call this fan base manic, with low self esteem. If we can't expect a victory Saturday after our visible improvements both with players and coaching, we need to all get on the couch. Bet us to win. Sit up straight and root us home. Then we can all get ready for the three (that's right) glory games to come.
