why no mention of Maya Moore on Geno's Legacy show? I think she was pretty good

Because the show focused on Rebecca and Jen. It was a different era.

I wonder if DC is alluding to the question Auriemma was asked about 3 point shooters and he brought up Davis, Taurasi and Bird, but no Moore. I think that was the postgame and not the legacy show, but DC might have confused the two.

That question was on the post game and not legacy show. But a valid point, and I think it is probably because when you think of Moore it is her whole game and not the beauty of her 3 point shot. Her work around the basket and in the mid-range was probably more important than her 3 ball. I thought Geno made a very interesting distinction between great shooting and clutch shooting. For clutch shooting he cited Sue and Diana, and the comment on Sue was she would miss every shot until it really mattered and then she never missed. And on Diana, that she probably made more important contest shots than anyone else.

clutch means "close games"... Maya didnt have many and KML just had one against ND. So does that mean they parity is much wider these days?

cant be clutch when you're on the bench with 8 minutes left in the 2nd half

Well, when you talk magin of victory, tina/maya were close to dee/sue.

I also think you can talk clutch shots and clutch performances..... Dee v. TCU was a performance. Dee v. TN was a shot/moment.

Maya v. DePaul was a clutch moment/play. Clearly, plenty of moments.

You could talk about parity -- but, Maya won two championships and Dee won three. Does that prove anything?

This is a repeat but it seems relevant. Geno mentioned Wendy Davis as a great pure shooter. She was a senior in my first year of UConn fandom [Rebecca's frosh year]...the team was pretty good but nowhere near the elite level....Rebecca btw came off the bench. I went down at some point to watch a game...precious few in the stands....you got to sit in the lower bowl pretty much anywhere you wanted....at $5 a pop.

Several of the UConn men's team were watching....looking bored out of their minds. Davis hit a trey....then another on the next possession....and the guys kinda looked at each other with raised eyebrows. Three more times down the court...three more treys. By the fifth one they were all on their feet yelling, jumping up and down and high-fiving....very cool reaction.

ok it was after the Nova game and John A asked the question about KML shooting and Geno went back to Bascom/Davis and DT/Sue.

being a good 3 pt shooter and being clutch is 2 different things and I guess Maya was good

If you just look at the stats (no clutch/pressure shots factor) then Wendy Davis is probably the best all time. She is 3rd all time in made 3 point shots behind Taurasi and Strother and 2nd all time in 3 point percentage behind Bird.
Moore is 5th and 3rd respectively. She averaged 2.2 three point shots per game, about the same as Taurasi. Maya Moore averaged 2.1.

Didn't Davis have a nickname - Slick?

Speaking for myself with a big game on the line I would pick Bird to take the shot.

I think I'd take Sue too. Prior to the Bird at the Buzzer game, she also hit a half-court shot at the buzzer in practice.

In Seattle's most recent championship season, she was a combo of Reggie Miller and Robert Horry.

Sue apparently has the NCAA season record at over 49%. Kaleena and Maggie Lucas are challenging it this season.

Maya is a clutch player. In Minnesota's playoff run, they trailed badly in the first half in one game. She kept hustling and hit a three just before the half, then came out on fire after halftime. The Lynx won the game.

Maya took over the NC game in San Antonio in 2010 after the team put up a whopping 12 at halftime.

As noted, Maya combined with Ketia to grab an unlikely win at DePaul.

As a frosh, Maya and the Huskies trailed at Rutgers by 8 late. UConn possession: Maya for 3, cutting the lead to 5. Next possession, Maya for 3, cutting the lead to 2. Next possession, turnover before Maya could get the ball. I have no doubt she would have nailed the third for the win.

In high school, she took over both games in the Seattle tourney, beating Tiffany's team and Rushdan's team in close games. Against Winter Haven, she made a key block and steal at the end. Against Khadijah's team, she put up nearly 40 in the first half.

Recall that UConn won 90 straight, with about 88 of them by double digits. She had only 4 losses and only a few close wins. Her MO was to outscore the entire opposition in the first half and blow the game open.

Maya Moore is second all time in 3 pointers made. I do not think Ann Strother is among UConn's Top 5.

Rarely has UConn found themselves in games in need of a clutch three pointer. Diana Taurasi made a huge 3 against Tennesee back in 2003 to send that game into overtime; As did Nykesha Sales in 1996 to send the national semifinal into overtime. Other than that? Hopefully, others will come to mind.

How about that short, slow kid. She was pretty good from behind the line.

You must mean the kid that many on BY thought should never have been given a UConn scholarship. Let me think....oh yeah...you must mean the one and only Valley Girl Maria Conlon.

Dee had that game in the NCAAs against Texas (?) where we were trailing the whole second half and looked lost and she just willed the team to victory including a highly contested 3 for the lead and I think a steal at the other end as time ran out.

Actually she is, but they don't have her listed there in the Media Guide. If you look at her individual stats, Strother was 290/770 (37.7%).

Top Five
Taurasi - 318
Moore - 311
Strother - 290
Davis - 279
Montgomery - 254

KML is gonna blow right by all of them. She had 93 last year and already has 61 this year. Looks like she will avg about 90-100 a year.

Kaleena could finish this year with 200+. She could have as many as 125 this season alone.

I agree with Meyers and Ice. Kaleena could break the career record as a junior. Stay healthy!

Thought you meant Ashley Valley at first. She made C. Viv cry one time from behind the line.

I think you are asking the wrong people, DC.

If you asked Geno why he left off Maya, I'm sure that he would react like this.
th

Maya is in that group and Geno would be the first to tell you.

I believe Alicia Ratay holds the record for best 3pt. % in a season at 54% in the 2001-Notre Dame NC season. Not that I like it or even liked typing it, but that record will probably never be broken.

She was really good at that. I read from the Horde this week that Sue's percentage was both the UConn and NCAA record. Maybe it was not fully accurate. I'd love to see Kaleena surpass that mark. If only she'd get hot. :)

I think Sue's is a career record, not a season. I don't know which is more impressive, Sue being a 49% 3pt shooter for her career or Ratay shooting 54% from 3 in a season. Those should both stand for a while.

UCONN has had some great players and 3-point shooters. But I would put the ball in D.T.'s hands with the game on the line over anybody. The fact that she was a great player was one reason and the other was she wanted the ball with the game on the line. She seemed to thrive on the pressure and I like that about her. And I believe that Maya has the prettiest jump shot of anyone on Earth... man or woman.

Kelly Faris is Superwoman in disguise.
