3 Point Shooting Problems

Vital seems to take a lot of threes from well beyond the arc. That can't help his percentage. Purvis did this in the past.

I think we need to change how we practice the three because this as been following us around for a couple years.

• Adams has been ice cold in both the preseason and his first game from 3. I wouldn’t be surprised if that changes after his confidence boost from the end of the Stony Brook game.

• Gilbert isn’t as bad as he’s been either, and seems to be finding his touch as well.

• Vital is forcing it. He needs to get out of that “I’m a sniper” mentality and play within the flow of the game.

• Polley and Anderson can hit open threes.

3 point shooting won’t be this team’s strong suit, but they will make more if they just take threes in rhythm. Our guards are way too comfortable draining the shot clock and settling for jumpers.

We saw how dynamic the offense was last night when Adams and Gilbert got shifty in their drives to the rim. Not only did we score more, but it opens up shots for spot up shooters, like when Adams kicked it out for a giant 3 from Polley.

All good points. You can see Vital is in his own head when he's squaring up.

And the key for Gilbert and Adams is to know when to kick it out and when to try to finish/draw the foul. They will have this figured out soon. Hopefully by Thanksgiving!

Tolksdorf - Took 27 3s at UConn, hitting 8. Took 67 shot from long range at American. Hit 15. Do the math.
Samuel - Defensive specialist. Didn't have much of an outside shot.
Lubin - Not a 3-point shooter and more akin to Strap in Hoosiers ("Don't shoot the ball unless you are all alone, under the basket").
Cassell, Jr. - Broke out at Iona, but was injured a lot at UConn. Looks like he "left" school with unused eligibility due to the transfer.
Hamilton - Was average, at best, behind the arc and if he did not declare in 2016, he would have last year.
Durham - Big man. Not a 3 point threat.
Jackson - only one that you can really be upset with (37%, but you said, "children.") Plus I remember Jackson being super frustrating. He would get open, but let his man catch up to him with a pump fake. Bugged the holy h311 out of me.

Napier, Giffey, and Boatright with a little Daniels sprinkled in.

There are plenty of 3pt specialists out there - KO just has to sign one up but I just don't understand the reluctance. JC tried a few and only Rashad worked out. Still, you only need someone to come in for a few minutes a game and chuck.

Was referring solely to Jackson. He had all the tools to become an impact 3pt specialist this season. Especially now we have Jalen, Alterique, Terry to open up the floor for him. But that wasn't good enough for him and daddy.

I said this last year and I said it to a friend this year that Vital is very similar to Purvis. They both launch threes and are streaky, can't break down anyone off the dribble but they play hard and have big hearts. So if you were frustrated with Rodney you will be frustrated with Vital.

True, but that doesn't count how many times Purvis stepped on the sideline or traveled in setting up for a 3.

Purvis was notoriously streaky. He would have stretches where he'd make everything, and then be ice cold for games at a time. If the first one went in, he often shot well for the whole game. If it didn't, not so much.

Even Giffey was only a great stand-still shooter who needed to be stepping into the shot. You couldn't hit him coming off of screens on the baseline and expect him to catch, turn and shoot. The last guy we had that met that description was Rashad, but it seems like everyone we play has at least one of those guys right now.
