As the new season approaches, evaluating the nearly unprecedented depth of talent on the Huskies’ roster, I’ve been giving some thought to the subject of which player is most likely to amass the greatest number of Kibitzer’s eponymous award. My initial guess would be Sarah, but, if you would indulge me, I’d like to mention a dark horse candidate.

First, some history: I don’t know how many current posters remember Kib, but he was my favorite all-time fellow-poster on this forum. He was obviously a guy who had “been around” for a long time before we lost him, had been a combat veteran, had a towering intellect, and was an absolute master of the mother tongue. As I recall, when he came up with the idea for this award it was not eponymous at all, but his many admirers here made it so after his passing.

Most importantly, in his mind, the number one Badass in any given game was not necessarily the highest scorer, nor could that player be identified via a quick scan of the box score. Rather, as he explained it, it might just as likely be a role player whose toughness and resilience on a given night might unpredictably generate the key daggers needed to carry the team to victory. I remember that Tina was a major inspiration for him, When Tina arrived on campus, her talent potential was obvious…the only problem was that she was a sweetheart, and only a shadow of what she would later become. Geno and CD worked so hard on her after her sophomore year, she mostly dropped the sweetheart profile and turned into a “beast,” a perpetual Bad Ass, and remains so.

Please don’t scoff, but I think there is another player who has the physical attributes and the potential to be similarly transformed….and that is Jana. Her transformation is probably a year off, but I like her chances. Anxious to hear what you think.

Regarding #2, the statement “High scorer may not earn this unique BY recognition” is meant as “…may (or may not) earn…”. Kib wanted Boneyarders to choose the honor for grittiness and worth, not just on statistics.

Jana could fit the role . She has a high motor and can definitely affect the game playing against the opponent's big but I would like to also nominate KK. She brings the energy and tenacity that can quickly turn things around. Another "dark horse' IMO would be Ashlyn. Watch her without the ball. She doesn't shy away from any defensive position and like KK besides scoring can always see her in the middle of the action scrabbling and fighting for the ball.

But then there's Azzi and Sarah. Watching them in the Final Four was amazing. Hey, how about giving a team Badass Award. This entire team is getting ready to live up to that rep.

isn't the entire 15-woman roster a possible winner -- in each game? i think it's premature at this point to be selecting favorites. i may be wrong of course. i hope all get the honor of putting on a baddass performance. it could be done in less than a minute and i hope that such BA showings are recognized. let's not vote sarah the BA 80% of the time simply because she is the MOP.

I'm with Paco, I think it will be pretty spread out. As Huskee pointed out, Caroline will likely win a few early based partly on the badassery she shows by making it back from her ordeal. I often vote for defensive intensity/time spent on the floor fighting for loose balls. Ashlynn, KK, Kayleigh would fit that bill. If Serah is the rim-protector I think she is, she'll get a lot of votes for her swats. Blanca and Ayanna will win a few with their "Holy aerial routine, Batman" abilities.

That's all before mentioning presumptive leaders Azzi and Sarah, as well as players we've all seen contribute, and the freshmen we all have high hopes for. I don't think we'll see every player earn a BA award, but ten wouldn't surprise me, and it would certainly make me happy.

What really counts is the tenacity, delivery in the clutch, and most of all, play that breaks the opponent's spirit, causing dagger in the heart, shoulders slumping effect.

In general, we know that the player who scores the most will most likely be the BadAss, especially in blowouts, which I expect many. I think it's unlikely that "any player" could win this in a blowout since collectively, a 50 point smackdown will make the other teams' shoulders slump, etc. And interestingly, Kib called for no BadAss in a loss.

If it's not just the "high scorer" for the game (ie. most likely Sarah or Azzi), I could see it going to tenacious play of players like KK, Ash, Jana, or even Ayanna - who could be a surprise bruiser based on her athleticism and strength (it will depend if she has a ferocious personality on the court). Or in close games, clutch players like Sarah or Azzi (or others - who steps up this year???!!).

I'm not discounting other players, and I hope the BadAss is spread around, but I don't want to see it just go, for example, to Caroline for "overcoming all her adversity", since that has zero to do with actual badassery in a game. Carol is an AMAZING story and can get tons of accolades in other threads.

Side note - Swin Cash's smackdown of Doug Gottlieb? Anyone have a link? I tried looking it up and nothing. I don't recall that...

I'm going to prognosticate here. Shade, if she gets enough minutes, will get the most BA wards. Probably won't be the high scorer in most (all?) games. But no one is a more hard nosed and competitive than Ms. Shade. She will do everything that needs doing. That clearly puts her in the running for BA awards.

Completely agree. Ash is the new “queen of all the little things,” as one analyst said of Aubrey.
