So at this moment, Merklinger is the odds on favorite to win the starting job in an open competition with Osborne, McDonald, Polston and maybe a walkon. I think we can all agree on that.
Not a bet I'd take. I thought Osborne looked decent in his bowl game. High ceiling.

And Roberson was brought in from Penn State to be the starter. He got hurt too. Then took over the next year and didn’t do much then.
Roberson would have started all year in ‘22 but for the fact that he was lost for the season in the second damn series of the opening game. And none of us know if his entire career wouldn’t have been on a different track if he never blew his knee out.

I thought he was the guy when he committed.. Just appears that Merklinger would have the edge on past evals and slightly more extensive experience. Although I think Osborne doing the whole game vs 'Ville might trump all. Going to be a battle royale! Huskies win.

Georgia Tech appeared to be very interested if not main target to be their QB next season... I don't know anything about him, haven't seen video, but the teams who recruited him and were interested in the portal cycle says a lot.
Just wondering, where are you seeing the offers he had in the portal? I've seen people reference offers for multiple players we've signed in the portal, but when I check their recruiting pages I only see offers out of high school

Really happy with this addition. Welcome to UConn 🏈 Jake

I don't know if any of the four guys we have coming in this year or coming back will give us what Fagnano gave us last year. But I also don't know if any of them won't. This is a very interesting quarterback room looking to contribute. In a logical world, the true freshman would learn the ropes and get familiar with the program and also learn from the more experienced guys. But I don't think any coach is going to pass on someone that shows them in practice that they're ready to help the team win. Realistically though I think Jake will get a close look along with his guy from Toledo. I think our depth at the position just got levels ahead of where we were last year.

I looked up his HS stats:

51 games, 68.7% completion, 9,625 yards, 113 TDs, 24 Ints. 238 rushes, 1,128 yards, 4.7 ypc, 31 TDs.

His senior year: 72.1% completion, 3,028 yards, 38 TDs, 2 Ints, 67 rushes, 439 yards, 6.6 ypc, 11 TDs.

I agree. I feel so much better in our QB scenario since the bowl.
Heupel said good things about Jake M. It's a playing time scenario - like why many choose the portal these days.

On paper this QB room is gonna be legit.
Yes very much so. Now to have a line to let them execute. I welcome Jake and hope he has success here. Along with all in the QB room.
Back in my day it was slang to say every thing is jake , witch was also meant the same as cool, then went to bad which actually meant
good.
Now I am back to thinking all is Jake.......... ; )

I concur on the line. It needs to be solid.

if we have an actual defense next year, we won't need a hero QB every week.
But i also won't say no, to putting up 40 points a game, lol
