OT: 2026 UConn Football Commit - Hannes Hammer (Cologne, Germany)

for those curious

his name would be pronounced "Hah-niss", auf deutsch.
it may be tempting to call him "Hans"; that would be incorrect.
it's kinda like "brendan" and "brandon" - similar, but not the same name.

Hammer is... well... Hammer.
In German, "hammer" is a literal hammer, but it also means "dope/sick/gnarly" - so truly this name ist HAMMER.

Based on names alone, Hannes is my new favorite player.

Welcome to the pound dog.

Before we start bestowing all sorts of accolades on him, there's one criteria needs answering before I bestow the title of "The Hammer" on him.

Did he ever break Wahoo McDaniel's leg?

"Das is der Hammer" literally translates to "That is the hammer", but means "That's awesome". Du bist der Hammer = You're awesome, UCONN ist der Hammer = UCONN is awesome.

I think I would tend to pronounce it Hah-ness, as I do for friends of mine by that name. Doesn't really matter though.

Nice to see international athletes at UCONN - from Germany we have had: Alex Honig, Eric Reibe, Niels Giffey, Marc Suhr and others - especially some of Geno's international stars.
