2026 Transfer portal

I wasn’t really a fan of the Paye hiring because she needed some head coaching experience elsewhere before taking the job, I always wished we could’ve landed La Rocque. I think there has been some recent issues with assistants as of late anyway, it’s something Betts mentioned in one of her features.

I’m wondering if UConn would be interested (and vice-versa). From West Hartford and played for Exodus in EYBL (Carol, Heckel). Floor spacer, can rebound, I think she’d be a great pickup.
Could be possible, as of now i have seen three interesting names for a 4 at Uconn, she is one but I also like the bouncy 6-1 player from Oklahoma State (I forget her name), and Addy Brown from Iowa State.

I'm hoping but not getting ahead of myself. UConn only has the one spot open as of now and could use a scoring guard too.
We have two way above average SG's returning in Ash and Allie and a similar level player who often plays SG in Kayleigh, and a bigger one that could play it in Blanca. Are any of those All American level like Azzi? No, but all quite good and plenty of depth, not even counting any possible contribution from Jovanna or Kellis.

Meanwhile upfront our 5's don't play 40 minutes a game and we don't have a playable true backup 4, Blanca is a 3, so from my perspective it isn't even close, and the first priority is a big. But if we get another opening maybe. Actually my second priority would probably be a 3 to compete with Morgan as a backup to Blanca.

Ziebell has not yet shown she can cut it against the types of teams UConn will need to get by to win a title. She has skills but is slow of foot on both ends.

Asking a freshman (Popovic) to be that player is a asking a lot (see Blanca on Friday).

I like Kelis but it would take a miracle for her to go from garbage time minutes to impact player next year.

Even in “garbage” minutes I think Kelis is a substantial talent that just ran into the minutes game. UCONN needs a bigger guard that can finish consistently against contact.

For what it’s worth, I just learned that Lara Somfai is actually Hungarian, where she was born. Her parents moved to Australia when she was 2. She speaks English and Hungarian fluently. Her parents are either in process of moving, or have just moved back, to Hungary, just a hop, skip and a jump from Storrs, CT. 😉

I understand that the portal opens tomorrow and closes in 2 weeks. He who hesitates is lost……

By the way, don’t pretend you don’t want her in Durham.. 🙃
And it's been a crazy portal preseason.

I wasn't that impressed from the little bit I saw. But my wbb talent evaluate isn't always the best.
Admittedly, I didn't watch Stanford a ton. But in the games that I watched, she played well. Go figure.

I have heard Himnusz, the Hungarian National anthem, played at Gampel Pavilion.

Twice.

It is beautiful. Hope to hear it at Gampel again in a few years.

Somfai.

I never saw Stanford this season, so I have no opinion about Somfai as a college player. Stanford lists her as 6-3.

However, I saw her play at IMG high school in person twice, on TV in the Chiptole national championship game, which IMG won, and in the McD AA game. Somfai didn't even start in any of the three IMG games I saw. Kelis Fisher was the high scorer for her team in one IMG game and also in the Chipotle NC game. Somfai scored 4 points in the McD game. Fisher only got garbage time at UConn this season.

Overall, Somfai did not make an impression on me as a formidable "big" or as a wing-forward player with speed or athletic basketball moves. However, I have little doubt she has more basketball skills than Jana El Alfy, though not nearly the size. Olivia Vukosa, whom I've seen a lot, seems a bit taller than Somfai with significantly more basketball skills.

I expect UConn will have some roster space available for the portal. If they use it, I'd rather see Geno go for a more athletic forward/center than Somfai, assuming anyone like that is available. A more reliable outside shooter and drive finisher than Arnold and Shade, who is also quicker than Ziebell, would also be a valuable addition to UConn next season. Who knows, maybe Popovich will be that kind of guard.

Try and check some Stanford's games from this season if they're on YouTube. She was much more impressive this year than in the Chipotle championships. I don't know about you, but I was lukewarm regarding Makeer after seeing her in the same tournament, I believe, last year, and now am really impressed with her improvement (which is what we hope for with all high school prospects).
