2026 Transfer Portal - UConn Interest Only

He played a good amount off-ball as a movement shooter with the option to either shoot or get into the lane off screens. If he’s willing to accept a CG role where he’s splitting point duties, his skill set fits what we want to do a lot. He also took a lot of lower percentage shots in the furman offense. Our system creates much better looks and Id expect 3 point efficiency to increase quite a bit.
Granted I've only seen Wilkins play that 1 game against us but I thought Fuman ran some actions similar to what we run

They incorporate a lot of movement concepts, it’s just simpler than what we run and relied more on Wilkins basic PnR. To me there’s not much projection about how well he’d fit in this system.

Someone will pay more, yes. There's also no evidence on way or the other that he will be influenced by it. If he has NBA dreams and a good circle, he would be smart to find a program that coaches up guards.
If Silas stays, he isn’t coming. (And that would be a mutual decision)

Different era.

Royal is not a great long range shooter, 30% was looked as a great improvement this season.

Ohio State recruited over him. Is it because he’s not the big and wide the B1G values most, or is because he’s really a wing - and UConn doesn’t need those.
I'd take Royal and throw him into the Ross/Stewart mix as a potential 20 mpg guy at the 3/4. But I don't see him as a Karaban replacement, especially not with those shooting numbers.

No concern his metrics are atrocious on both torvik and miya?

I'm sure the staff will do a deep dive on this if we get some mutual interest (big if).

I'm not seeing much in the way of red flags on his metrics though other than the rebounding. Too many iso long 2s, but he still had a solid % from inside the arc anyways. Great % at the tin. Pretty much all Assist % is phenomenal, good FT% and rate. He's pretty average everywhere else.

Some might be concerned about the 3pt%, but I'm not considering his role and usage. The release looks good to me.

Defensively he's worse than Solo Ball. That's hard to do.

Why? We played Cam, Steph and Tristen together. Silas is 6'4, Wilkins is 6'5. Why can't they play together?

Silas plays the tristen role and Wilkins plays a Cam Spencer esque role
It probably doesn't work unless Solo moves to a 6th man role. That's hard to see happening IMO.

Hurley practically did it this year. Solo's minutes got cut significantly in favor of Ross. There's 25+ minutes here a night for Wilkins easily

Screams Malachi Smith 2.0 AKA a local area kid (Sumler was born in Waterbury) who uses their last year of eligibility to play for his dream school (I'm just assuming UConn is his dream school, lol).

I really like Sumler as a bench option that can play all three backcourt positions. 6'4 200, started at PG, but also played minutes at the 2 and the 3.

Nice mix of volume (74th highest usage rate in nation) and efficiency (112.3 offensive rating; 52.5 2P%; 40.7 3P%, assist rate is almost double turnover rate) and I like his propensity of drawing fouls (5.3 fouls drawn per 40 is 192nd in the nation) even though his FT% this season wasn't good (65.7%). Not great defensive rates, though.

Here's a clip of his on-ball skills.

I know nothing about Wilkins’ intentions but if I was him I would look to capitalize on a star season and go to a power conference where a lot of shots are guaranteed to boost my draft profile. Wouldn’t be looking for a 2-3 year development plan. UConn probably isn’t the place, and that’s okay

I really liked Najai Hines at Seton Hall. Him and Reibe could be a good 1-2 punch at C. Reibe as the more fluid offensive big and Hines as the more physical and monster big. From NJ. Very intrigued here. And they’re both young so we’d have years of development (pending any NBA decisions)

Is this Devin Royal thing real? 6’6 PFs only succeed in modern basketball if they are absolute dogs. Exactly the Hurley type. Assuming if he comes here, it’s with the expectation of starting? Can he play SF?

Assuming Murauskas will follow Bennett to ASU? If not, he might be the answer at PF

Wilkins is the one. Shifty
After the Furman game, I felt like it was pretty likely we'd pursue him if he entered the portal. That was one hell of an audition.

(He looked smaller than 6'5" to me for whatever that's worth.)

Royal looks like a combo forward. If you watch his highlight clip, he looks like a three level scorer, can take people off the dribble, is an ok shooter (form and FTs look good) and scores a lot in the post. He’s the type of player we’ve been missing, imo. Not saying he’s the answer, but he’s basically what we always hoped Stew would be.

The difference is Solo was a bad defender on the #11 defense in the country as an upper classmen. Wilkins was a bad defender on the #183 defense in the country as a freshman. Stats have to be contextualized. It's the same reason why Alex's defensive rating was elite his sophomore year, but not junior year. When you have an elite team defense (thank you Clingan and Steph), everyone else's #s look better.

Staff is going to need to dig into the film to get a better sense of his capabilities.

Is that the first Big East kid that’s ever been looked at from portal? Thought Hurley was against it.
if thats true id love to steal Hines. He looked like he has significant upside in both UConn games this year

I said a few weeks ago, hes a court slapper. Be careful with this one, not sure he has the personality for a Hurley team. Nothing says me, me, me like slapping the court
It's interesting how perceptions can differ. I never associated any negative connotation whatsoever with that antic. To me it's no different than clapping, yelling "Let's go!", etc.
